tom steyer, 15% in south carolina. frankly, a surprise for politics geeks, for those of us who pore over each new poll. a surprise. but if you are a tv watcher in the great state of south carolina or the great state of nevada, it was probably less surprising to you because check this out. along with the fresh numbers we got today on total ad spending for all the candidates, we also got a breakdown of what the candidates are spending by state, and it makes the puzzle kind of easy to solve. all right. so far the candidates combined have spent $17 million on political ads just in the state of south carolina, okay? $17 million in tv and radio ads, south carolina alone. here's how you solve the puzzle. of that $17 million spent in south carolina, $14 million of it was spent by tom steyer. oh, that's how it works. tom steyer has spent more on ads in south carolina than pete buttigieg or bernie sanders has spent on ads nationwide for their entire campaign. same thing in nevada, the other state that helped deliver tom steyer a

this is working for tom steyer. he's spending money in nevada and south carolina and it is having an impact. money still, it seems, is the mother's milk of american politics. >> right. it can't -- it can't buy an election, but it certainly can buy name recognition which you're seeing work for steyer in those two states. and i think what you said about bloomberg is right, that's what they would say. if this thing is tight like all your polls show and then it heads beyond those four states, it's possible he's not said -- bloomberg's not said how much he's going to spend. it's not impossible that he would spend 2, 3, $5 billion. if you put that type of money into a bunch of states against candidates who couldn't even come close to competing against that, it could make a difference. particularly once the campaign heats up and you have to compete in many, many states in a very, very compact period of time. and that's the bet that bloomberg's making. at some point you have to be yourself out there. you have to go through

we're joined from des moines, iowa by presidential candidate tom steyer. good morning and welcome to washington journal. >> good morning, how are you? >> very well. let's start, why do you want to be president? >> what i really -- i want to do some things. i think first of all, there are two big things that have to happen. one is i believe we have a broken government that's been purchased by corporations, and that job one is to get that government back of, by and for the people. and as somebody who spent ten years fighting and beating those corporations, i know that we can do it, and we need to restructure d.c., including having 12-year term limits for congresspeople and senators. and secondly, we absolutely have to deal with our climate crisis. i've said it's my number one priority that i declare a state of emergency on day one. do it from the standpoint of environment justice, create millions and millions of good-paying union jobs. but we have to do it, get on it, and on it on day one. if we do those two things, take back our government so we can get the

tom steyer is raising money from other people. he's made it too some of the earlier debates. just tonight, steyer appears to have qualified for next week's democratic debate on the strength of new polling from a couple of early states. he did quite well actually polling third in nevada and second in south carolina. new fox news polls out tonight. tomorrow's the deadline to make it into that debate unless we get a sudden avalanche of brand-new polls tomorrow, it seems pretty likely this is going to be the lineup at the debate next week. but that brings us back to this bizarre world element to the democratic race right now. at least in terms of the metrics, right? only one of the two candidates blowing everybody out of the water in terms of their spending is even going to be debating, right? the other huge spender, bloomberg, is not even trying to debate, and he's not even going to try to compete in the first four early states. he's not even trying to get on the ballot in iowa or new hampshire or south carolina or nevada. and maybe the billionaires are each working a genius str
