palestinian authority president mahmoud abbas later on in the week. violence has erupted over access to a site considered very holy by muslims and jews. oren liebermann is there with more on what to expect. >> reporter: let's talk about the latest attack. there are some questions about what exactly happened in the southern israeli city at the central bus station. initial reports were that two palestinian attackers entered the central bus station and started shooting and stabbing. as you said, police say at least six have been injured, four of them police officers. police say one israeli was also killed or has also tied. police say one of the attackers was killed at the scene. but there are now questions about whether there was more than one attacker. police are investigating whether the second suspect was indeed an attacker or was a bystander. this comes after what was a tensely quiet day in jerusalem in the west bank and in israel. there had been up until this point no attacks throughout, but this changed that. we've been waiting for the day when the attacks and the violence would end.

abbas and king of jordan king abdullah to try to bring the situation together and calm the tension, the fear that's so palpable here to try to calm everything down before this continues too much longer, brianna. >> and we're hearing that secretary kerry may be making a very important trip soon. what are you hearing, oren, about this? the expectations of this? >> reporter: well, there's still details to be hammered out. we know he spoke with prime minister benjamin netanyahu, the two sides trying to arrange a meeting. and that will be an attempt to bring both sides, israelis and palestinians, back to peace talks, to peace negotiations. secretary kerry very obviously wants to restart the peace process here. well, there isn't much hope on either side on either the israeli or palestinian side that that could lead anywhere with tangible results. we also of course still on the agenda know that israeli prime minister netanyahu will meet with president obama on november 9th. that's still scheduled will be more of an attempt to bring people back, to bring the sides here back to the peace pr

that it won't happen. >> but, i mean, have you groups like hamas praising these attacks. mahmoud abbas has called the shootings by israel of these attackers, you know, assassinations basically, killings. >> yeah, well, i believe that all sides should take strong steps, including the right words, to tamp this down. i think president abbas should and i think prime minister netanyahu should, and i think it's imperative that the united states and its allies undertake another effort to try to bring calm and hopefully get some process going again because the history of the middle east, anderson, is that when there is a peace process in place, the parties tend to be stable although still very hostile towards each other. when it appears that it's breaking down or broken down, as is now the case, then violence occurs. >> is there a real role for the united states to play? i mean, secretary kerry has talked about going there. we've heard some people voicing concern that by going there it may inflame things even more. >> no, i don't think that's correct that it will inflame things. i think we do
