fire crews were out here. all crews have been sent out to fight this fire. if you look there, that's the fire line. earlier it was an orange glow. then it became bright red. now smoke. what that means, fire crews are making progress on the front lines. this is east macarthur street at 8th street in sonoma. we are less than half a mile from downtown sonoma. mandatory evacuation orders are in place in this neighborhood. the power has also been cut as the fire came very close to this neighborhood. one of the big issues as we've been talking about, the wind. fire crews say the uptick in the wind not only pushes the fire along but employees these embers and ashes through the air that can spark hot spots and we have seen the fire jump as we drove through the neighborhood earlier, some streets, quiet, intact, others, homes that were fully engulfed in flames. and as we see the shift in winds and the pick-up in wind speed, that's pushing the fires into areas much faster than they predicted. now, joining me right now is captain tony mchale with cal fire. i appreciate

all morning we have seen bay area crews as well as crews from across the state coming in and out prepping for their days work. within the last 15 minutes we shot video of those crews starting their day. we have seen bay area crews from albany, oakland, santa clara county, even as far north as truckee. everyone here putting efforts together to try to fight this massive fire. there are no official reports on the updates of acreage. we can tell you that word is here that the fairgrounds -- at the fairgrounds that the fire has grown to 65,000 acres. that's about a 100 square mile area. it is massive. i will tell you, we only saw the tip of it when it reached the water on 101 along the coast as we were coming into ventura. you can see all of the fire crews heading into the command center. we understand around 7:00 this morning they will get their orders and learn where they will be stationed throughout the day. we are also expecting an update from cal fire around 6:30. we will have a live interview about the latest conditions and what to expect. we do know that at least overnight the wind was

we have crews headed to the scene, as well. the map kind of gives you a better understanding of where it is. no doubt no doubt 580 to 88 see the thick, plume of smoke as it rises in to the air. all right. no threats of winds there. appearing calm earlier. rob was tracking that for us. >> relatively light in the area. you can see the smoke rising straight upwards from that fire. a lot of heat generated from that. you can see the smoke plume lifting straight on up and interesting for scale. they have a ladder truck starting on the dousing of the flames there and the winds really not that intense. a lot of embers coming off and away from the building structure. taking a look at the maps here, see wind generally across the bay out of the northwest and relatively light at oakland airport and wind speeds closer to downtown and lake merritt northwest from 5 to 10 miles per hour so some of that smoke higher into the atmosphere drifting off towards the south and east for you this morning. temperatures by the way starting off mild. low 6
