, ten people were dead including the killer. joining us from munich, cnn's erin mcloughlin. what do we know about this killer? >> reporter: well, police have yet to release his name but what we do know is that he was 18 years old. he was a dual german and iranian citizen. they believe that he acted alone. he was not known to police, no prior criminal record. they also believe that in the end, he committed suicide. his body was found at around 8:00 local time, hours after the shooting not far away from the mall where he unleashed this horrific wave of terror. what police don't know at this point is why he did this, what were his motives. that is what they are trying to establish as we speak, anderson. >> there was one witness who was on cnn who said that she heard him say allah akbar but there's this other videotape where he seemed basically mentally deranged talking about derogatory references to turkish people, saying he lived in ger germany in a turkish neighborhood, poor neighborhood. he has dual citizenship, germany and iran. what do we know about, are there any reports of links

with the victims. >> those victims have not been named. our erin mclaughlin joins us. when you hear the police chief say this is the toughest day of his 40 year career, that certainly says something. what do we know about how all of this unfolded? >> reporter: well, natalie, it truly was a horrific and tragic, not to mention chaotic day that began at 5:50 p.m. local time at an mcdonald's not far from here is when authorities say a lone gunman with a pistol, walked inside the mcdonald's and opened fire. he left the mcdonald's and made his way then to a shopping mall. authorities say that's where he killed the majority of his victims, at least nine people killed. and at least 16 were critically injured. now the gunman made his way from the mall. his body was later discovered at around 8:00 local time, not far away. they believe he committed suicide. now, in the chaos that unfoaled, authorities say there were multiple reports of multiple shootings tloults munich. all of those reports, additional reports have been discredited. there were also eye-witness aaccouna accou accounts telling
