raised through an apartment building injurying seven people. >> kristin thorne is live with the latest. >>reporter: good morning. police have identified the victim as a 36-year-old man. i spoke with people who live in this apartment building, they know this man and just returned home from the hospital yesterday, perhaps after a medical procedure and he was in a wheelchair. they tell me they could hear him screaming through his apartment because he needed help. these are pictures we received from a woman who lives inside the building. it shows people going down the fire escape. it happened around 2:30 this morning. police tell us the fire started on the third floor. the victim was found in a third- floor apartment in cardiac arrest. the fire was quickly brought under control, but in the meantime, people had to jump from windows and climb down the fire escapes. >> my neighbors jumping out the window, crying. the kids were crying. people was not dressed properly, trying to just get out of the building. it was -- it was really a terrifying experience for all of us in the building. >

sound. the coast guard is searching for one person still missing. kristin thorne is at university hospital with the latest on this. >> reporter: i just spoke exclusively with a man who identified himself as the brother of the pilot. he says he came here to stony brook university hospital to check on his brother. he says he's doing just fine. he is one of three people now recovering here. of course the coast guard is still searching for one missing person, and we are also hearing moments after the crash. >> i only have two survivors, one for each kayak, we have three kayaks looking for another. >> reporter: and right now, the coast guard is continuing its search over the long island sound. it was around 11:00 last night that a small plane carrying four men traveling from connecticut to mcarthur airport on long island lost its engine. the engine simply lost power. the plane landed in the long island sound less than a mile offshore in receive tuck et what are -- setauket harbor. >> officers arrived to the scene immediately made their way down to the shoreline, commandeered kayaks fro

members who went down with the tugboat that crashed where built. kristin thorne has the latest. >> reporter: the search continues today for two missing crew members of that tugboat. the coast guard was forced to call off the search around 9:00 last night because it was too dangerous in the hudson river. other agencies plan to resume the search later this morning. the body. 62-year-old paul amon of bay ville ville, new jersey, was recovered yesterday. authorities have not released the eye identities of the two missing crew members, although years old. it was early yesterday morning when the 90-foot tugboat hit a stationary construction barge at the boat quickly took on water and sank. we spoke with amon's daughter by phone, her dad was supposed to be on vacation, but they called him to go back to work. >> he picked up his bags, excited to go because he loved the job. he grew up working on the water and he was in the navy. he was on diesel subs in the navy and we just always grew up around the water. >> we also expected at some point today crews will begin the process of at least

. kristin thorne is live on the scene with more details. >>reporter: hi there, rob. they did it rather quickly. more than 100 firefighters responded to this fire. two firefighters and one resident of the building did suffer minor burns. this is an exclusive photo we have here at eyewitness news of the roof of that building now completely burned out. you can see there is nothing left to it. the fire broke out around 5:30 this morning in the six story residential building on thompson street. of the building and quickly ved through the top floor and then flew the roof. as i mentioned more than 100 firefighters responded. neighbors saw the flames and ran over to help get people out of the building, it was a lot of black smoke and people coming out, elderly people and so on. you see the flames, ashes, flames of the black smoke and then also the fire department trucks started coming over. people coming out, elderly people. >>reporter: it's unclear how many residents have been displaced by this fire, but i took a walk down, looked inside, a lot of water in the lobby of that building. you'll a

. eyewitness news reporter, kristin thorne is live on the scene with what we know at this hour. kristen. >> reporter: rob, we just spoke with a man who was sitting next to december yeah sims when -- the night. she stayed out, and shots rang out around 11:45 last night. the 61-year-old odessa sims was struck by a bullet in her neck. she was rushed to harlem hospital where she was pronounced dead. this was around 144th street and lenox avenue last night. police say sims was not the intended target. >> i didn't see him, but they told me, i saw him out there runng, behind shooting at another fellow, and she went down. >> reporter: sims lived just two blocks from where this all happened. we spoke with her brother at the apartment. she was too emotional to go on camera but did tell us that sims was one of 13 brothers and sisters. police have not yet released any information about the person they are looking for in this incident. live in harlem this morning, i'm kristin thorne, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> what a tragedy. thank you so much. just in. a taxicab and another car crashed on the up

accused of attacking people. kristin thorn is live with the story. >> the person that the suspect is accused satisfy killing was the suspect remains in critical condition at the hospital after being shot by police. . >> it took a barrage of police bullets to end the rampage. 23-year-old james patrick dylan is accused of staffing a female neighbor in the face and neck and then went to a liquor store where he stabbed the owner to death and set another man on fire. two hours later, an inspector and lieutenant cornered dylan in his own backyard. >> the officers demanded the suspect drop the knife and bottle accelerant he was carrying. he sprayed the two with the liquid burning their hands and face. the officers discharged the >> there are reports dylan has psychological problems and was off his medication. he has many arrests. five earlier arrests date back to when he was a juvenile. the man who dylan allegedly set on fire is going to be okay. he is recovering at hospital. the 39-year-old woman who dylan allegedly stabbed has been treated and released from the hospital. as for the two

island reporter kristin thorne was inside the courthouse and posted updates on social media on today's sentencing. she's in central islip tonight. >> reporter: liz and bill, the judge told scott greene he planned on sentencing him one to four years in prison on grand larceny and official misconduct charges, but he says that once he heard greene's heartfelt apology he changed his mind. former suffolk county sergeant scott greene pled with the judge to give him a six month sentence. he said he wants to become a productive member of society again. the father of three told the judge through tears of his actions stealing cash from hispanic drivers. "at first i was in denial. i pointed fingers at others until i finally accepted i was my own worst enemy. so many people trusted my judgment and character. i let them down." >> he never thought about the families of the people he stole >> reporter: this woman says she has no sympathy for the veteran officer. she says her father was one of the people greene stole from. >> after an incident like this he don't want to drive, you know. he has

restaurant attending a birthday party. kristin thorne has more. >> reporter: liz, police say 53- year-old was driving westbound on east main street when he behind me parked here. this happened outside the mill pond tavern here in center port. the man that lives in certain port was charged with dwi. this happened during a birthday party going on in the tavern last night around 9:00. we stopped by the auto body shop where a lot of these nine cars are being held right now. the owner of the auto body shop tells me he believes the damages are between 150 and $200,000 total. we spoke to partygoers they heard the loud noise from inside. they say it sounded like he backed up and hit more cars, reversed then hit them again. the birthday girl said everyone ran out to see what was going on. >> he must have been drunk. we walked outside. there was a whole bunch of pieces of cars. everybody's car was basically totaled on the outside. he basically hit every car on the outside of the lot. from inside the restaurant ran out and tackled him inside his car and held him until police arrived. he is being held on

homicide was not in the car that killed the officer. long island reporter kristin thorne is at the courthouse in mineola with much more. >> back in 2013 dismissed the charges against james ryan for that exact region saying he was not driving the car which ultimately killed police officer joseph olivieri. >> reporter: eyewitness news has obtained video taken by investigators. it shows james ryan's toyota camry smashed in and next to it a black escalade. officer joseph olivieri. he was in court today on several charges including aggravated vehicular homicide. prosecutors say ryan should be held responsible for olivieri's death because he started the chain collision crash which olivieri was responding to. >> our feeling is authorities jumped to conclusions, blamed the only person they thought they could blame which is james ryan because there had been evidence of his drinking. >> reporter: prosecutors say ryan had been drinking and driving on the l.i.e. in october 2012 when he hit a car. they say ryan fled the scene and was involved in another accident. officer olivieri responded and
