nelson mandela. there were questions about whether the president would get to see mandela. instead joining the first lady there as they called mandela's wife who was at his side at the hospital where he was being treated. president obama respecting the family's privacy as that nation and the world prays for an icon. abc's jonathan karl traveling with the president. >> reporter: president obama met briefly with nelson mandela's family, including several of his daughters, offering them heart-felt support, peace, and comfort. but he was unable to see the man he calls a hero to the world. mandela remains on life support. south africa's president said he's in critical but stable condition. president obama drew some protesters, opposed to his administration's policies on terrorism, including the use of drone strikes, but he received an enthusiastic welcome at a town hall with young leaders. at every stop in africa, president obama has paid tribute to mandela. >> the outpouring of love that we've seen in recent days shows that the triumph of nelson mandela and this nation speaks t

here is where nelson mandela first defied the government. and it is here that jose bright believes he is making a difference. >> this is a country where 70% of the adults are unemployed, nationwide, 30%. has one of the highest rates of murder and rape in the world. absolutely, and only less than a third of the population have a high school diploma. but all i can talk about is one child at a time. most of these children were failing in public school, deemed unteachable and unwanted. hiv aids is still a badge of shame in south africa. for those stricken by the virus and their children. in jose bright's school, those children are encouraged and the results speak for themselves. >> in 12 years, we have had 100% pass rate. in 12 years, none of our girls have fallen pregnant, in 12 years, none of our children have been involved in the criminal justice system. >> reporter: oh, you're an optimist? >> i have no choice, i have to be an optimist, because i see the miracle unfolding. >> reporter: many of his students go on to college. out of his classes

the first time i saw nelson mandela was at yankee stadium in 1990. six months after he had been released from prison. i was in awe, probably we all were. but then he did something that charmed all of us. >> you now know who i am. i am a yankee. >> reporter: as a college student, i read about this man serving a life sentence for fighting against apartheid. i was fired up by the slogan, free mandela. years later, at abc, i traveled to south africa to embezzle his birthplace and qunu, where he you up as a small child. and where he will be buried alongside his parents. and earlier this year, i spent weeks in pretoria, outside his hospital, after waives of waives of south africans came singing and dancing, celebrating his life. ironically, mandela's hospital room was not far from the courthouse where, in 1963, he and seven co-defendants were tried for attempting to overthrow the white rule government. the trial began in this courtroom in pretoria. there was no jury. a judge would decide the fate of the defendants. the maximum penalty, death by hanging. a
