his police cruiser. justin finch is live for us at penn presbyterian medical center, doctors are treat that officer. how is he doing this morning, justin? >> we are told he has long road ahead. commissioner richard ross and mayor jim kenney gave briefing overnight calling officer jesse heart net brave, and also saying his quick actions helped to save his life. we do have radio moments from police radio just after he was hit. >> bleeding heavily. has been shot. >> police say this ambush happened about 11:40 thursday night at the corner of south 60 street and spruce streets, officer heartnet was hit within his cruiser approaching the intersection, that's when the shooter began his approach on foot, walking and shooting a 9-millimeter gun we are told and continuing to shoot right into that cruiser window. in all, he shot 13 shots. officer heartnet did return fire, striking the suspect at least three times, we are, to the suspect we are told is a 30 year old man. he tried to escape on foot, but he was caught near that area at 60 ' and delancey streets. weapon was recovered, as well.
