i did not come out against the tpp yesterday. i came out very early on in this process. i have been against trade agreements that have hurt american workers and the environment from way back when. i have been standing up to corporate america, fighting for real tax reform when many corporations in a given year pay nothing in federal income taxes. i think the question is when so few have so much in this country today, which candidate is better prepared to stand up to the billionaire class and fight for working families? i will let the voters make that decision. but i'm confident if they study my record, they will respect what i have done. >> another issue is the keystone pipeline. she's now in agreement with you on keystone pipeline and on climate change. >> well, that's right. that's just another example, you know? i understood again from early on, several years ago, that if you are serious about slowing down climate change and transforming our system away from fossil fuel to sustainable energy, you cannot spore the skv excavation of some of the dirtiest oil in the world.

the tpp in my view is continuation of disastrous trade policies. enough is enough. we need new approachers to trade which creates jobs in america and not in china. >> the president says that things would be worse if not for trade agreements that this trade agreement is better than previous trade agreements has better protections and that it's wrong to blame all the ills of the shrinking -- growing wage disparity, shrinking wage increases, shrinking manufacturing base on trade agreements. >> well again, i was on the floor of the senate a couple of weeks ago. you know what i was doing, reading the quotes from people like president clinton and mitch mcconnel and all advocates of free trade right wing think tanks, corporate people wonderful things they promised if we passed free trade with china et cetera et cetera. it turned out almost every instance they were wrong. i'm not saying trade alone is the reason why the middle class is disappearing. i am saying and we have all kinds of economic studies to back it up that it's one of the central factors. look, nobody doubts

in cable news cnn and fox news mentioned the tpp only two times. here on the ed show have discussed the trade agreement on 71 broadcasts. i guess today is 72. we talk about the tpp because it directly affects middle-class jobs. that's what we want in the country. jobs can be outsourced. you can count on it. it's a bad deal. americans need to be aware of this. you need to get in touch with your representative and say wait a minute this is a sovereignty issue. this is a job issue. why in the world would you sign onto something i know damn well you haven't read. ask yourself the question. would you sign a legal document that if affected you personally without reading it? do you know an attorney that would tell you to hey, go ahead. i know you haven't read it. but go ahead and sign it. does it make sense? unfortunately it looks like the tpp will pass with very little or zero debate. last month, there's u.s. trade said it could be wrapped up on wednesday. the trade minister said an agreement could be reacheded in weeks. this trade deal will cover -- lis

i think she's going to have a problem with tpp. i suspect hillary supports tpp. i think on some of the other issues you unpacked i think hillary is not going to be as friendly as some on the progressive side of the ledger want her to be. i think she'll largely get away with it unless folks like you and others hold her feet to the fire to see exactly where she stands but at the end of the day i think she gets by. >> what do you want to hear from hillary clinton on monday? how far does she have to go? >> monday is about talking about what do we do in urban settings and how do we turn around places like detroit where the economy has passed some of these places by. i think we need to talk about the strategies that we need to develop the middle class and redevelop middle class in detroit. >> you can't redevelop urban cities in this country if you're going to support trade deals that's going to cut jobs. >> let me be really clear. ed you're right. the entire labor movement is against tpp for lots of different reasons. some in the labor movement are for keystone. some a

no conversations at all about tpp and human rights in mexico. i saw the pictures of 43 dead young men on reforma and people demanding to know what's happening to them. human rights is worse than ever in mexico and telling some secret trade deal is going to improve it. it doesn't work whether it's in the united states, mexico vietnam, or any of the other nations. >> so, laurie how do you see

he laid out the case for the tpp after that sound byte. the united states is working hard to make this trade deal fair. >> my argument is twofold. number one, precisely because that horse is out of the barn the issue we're trying to deal with now is can we make for a higher bar on labor, on environmental standards, et cetera in that region and write a set of rules that are fairer because right now it's not fair. if you want to improve it that means we need a new trade regime. the old one isn't working for us. the second reason it is important is because the same countries we're negotiating with are the same countries that china is negotiating with. china could write the rules of trade. it means that we will be cut out. >> wait a second. if you're the biggest customer in the world, who is going to want to cut you out? it seems like we're not swinging a big enough stick here. we're the united states of america. we are the biggest customer. we have the best economy and yet we're dancing to somebody else's music. i don't get it. the president

tpp is 90% done and she should join us in calling for that. we'll get the tpp when we can read it. for now, it's no on fast track. let's see what has been done. >> genevieve wood what is the strategy of the republicans at this point? you've got 85% of house members on the democratic side 85% of the democratic members on the house side saying they don't want this. but yet the president is still pushing it. it's really -- it's one for the archives politically, isn't it? >> well it is. last time i looked at numbers, 50 to 20 democrats said they were going to be for it. republicans have said look at least 30 house democrats have to vote to get this thing through. there are a lot of republicans who don't like it. a lot of conservative republicans don't want to give the president fast track authority because they don't trust him because of what he's done in immigration and other issues. but right now, he is relying upon republican support. even if they don't vote for this thing and it goes through, i think hillary still has to make some answers. won't people in the democratic party stand

unfortunately for them the tpp isn't going away any time soon. it's becoming a bigger issue every day and average working americans are seeing what it's going to do to their future. even donald trump has taken a stand against the trade deal. he released this radio ad earlier today. >> i learned a long time ago, a bad deal is far worse than no deal at all. and the obama trans-pacific partnership and fast track are a bad, bad deal. for american businesses for workers, for taxpayers, it's a huge set of handouts for a few insiders that don't even care about our great, great america. congress has to stand up and defeat this raw power grab. with a dismal obama track record why should a republican congress give him more power and gut the constitution to do it. it's just crazy. >> meanwhile president obama is pushing harder than ever for this trade deal. it's almost campaign style stuff. on friday the president will travel to nike headquarters in beaverton, oregon, to campaign for the tpp. the president will argue the controversial trade deal is good for

what the tpp is going to do is hit more sectors in the economy. chorus -- and i mean chorus is nothing compared to the transpacific partnership. the tpp will take over 40% of the global economy. now, this deal puts american so renty at risk. if that's what you want support it. we haven't heard specifics on how they are going to be enforcing these regulations. if you look at history, it's hard to figure out how the tpp is beginning to create jobs. so as we move into almost midnight, on the tpp, and you've got strange political bedfellows here the tea parties don't want it. they don't want to see him succeed on anything. they don't want to agree with him on anything. but they're also hearing back home that it will gut jobs and republicans, at least if they don't put a jobs bill up, they want to say they're for jobs. the democrats across the board, 85% of those in the house are for workers and working families and middle class families, and there is no historical track record to take us down the road, that yes we have to do tpp because it's going to

president obama is still pushing the dangerous tpp, transpacific partnership. "the new york times" published an explosive article revealing the tpp investment chapter. tpp would allow foreign corporations to sue the united states government for actions that undermined their investment expectations and hurt their business. companies and investors would be empowered to challenge regulations, rules, government actions and court rulings before what? tribunals. how many times have we covered this on the ed show? senator warren says taxpayers would clean up. >> the company could skip the court and go br an international panel of arbitrators. if the company wins the ruling cannot be challenged in u.s. courts and the the arbitration panel could require the american taxpayers to cough up millions even billions of dollars in damages. >> so it took wikileaks to get this document, not anybody in the united states media. we've been following the developments of the transpacific partnership since last summer. now we're in the 11th hour folks. it gets really politically hot.
