bottom line the tpp is a test. the elected officials have decided are going to have to decide which side they're going to be on and who they are looking out for. joining me tonight, congresswoman from illinois and president of the communication workers of america. both of you have done yeoman's works -- >> happy new year. >> thank you. >> both of you have done yeoman's work trying to alert the american people on. this but president obama, i mean congresswoman, why doesn't -- what does the president see in this that is so good or does he just want to do a deal with republicans for some reason? how do you see this? >> i think in part the president sees that having u.s. influence in the asian rim is a really good idea. and i, for one, would not be against any old trade agreement. but this one doesn't do what we need to do. you mentioned wages as the first thing that are at risk. americans need a raise. american workers, ordinary people have not seen their income go up for three decades. and as the economy is beginning

he laid out the case for the tpp after that sound byte. the united states is working hard to make this trade deal fair. >> my argument is twofold. number one, precisely because that horse is out of the barn the issue we're trying to deal with now is can we make for a higher bar on labor, on environmental standards, et cetera in that region and write a set of rules that are fairer because right now it's not fair. if you want to improve it that means we need a new trade regime. the old one isn't working for us. the second reason it is important is because the same countries we're negotiating with are the same countries that china is negotiating with. china could write the rules of trade. it means that we will be cut out. >> wait a second. if you're the biggest customer in the world, who is going to want to cut you out? it seems like we're not swinging a big enough stick here. we're the united states of america. we are the biggest customer. we have the best economy and yet we're dancing to somebody else's music. i don't get it. the president

what the tpp is going to do is hit more sectors in the economy. chorus -- and i mean chorus is nothing compared to the transpacific partnership. the tpp will take over 40% of the global economy. now, this deal puts american so renty at risk. if that's what you want support it. we haven't heard specifics on how they are going to be enforcing these regulations. if you look at history, it's hard to figure out how the tpp is beginning to create jobs. so as we move into almost midnight, on the tpp, and you've got strange political bedfellows here the tea parties don't want it. they don't want to see him succeed on anything. they don't want to agree with him on anything. but they're also hearing back home that it will gut jobs and republicans, at least if they don't put a jobs bill up, they want to say they're for jobs. the democrats across the board, 85% of those in the house are for workers and working families and middle class families, and there is no historical track record to take us down the road, that yes we have to do tpp because it's going to

i support the tpp. we need to be opening markets everywhere. >> so that's who the president is hanging out with on this deal. on the other side you have elizabeth warren, and every single union in this country. >> i do not believe that continuing a set of bad policies policies that are failed makes any sense at all. we need a new direction in trade policy. and the tpp is not that direction. >> millions of jobs paying good wages, and cities and in suburbs and in rural america that have simply disappeared. some have been lost to technology. far too many have been lost to unfair trade practices as jobs are moved overseas. >> so the answer is not only no but hell no. no i'm not going to be doing any single handed trying to defeat it. i've told everybody how i feel. that's the way it is. >> so the partly sunny's challenge here is to prove that this will not ship jobs overseas and he can't do that. meanwhile, history tells us u.s. trade agreements are bad for american workers in the economy. there is a ledger

i think she's going to have a problem with tpp. i suspect hillary supports tpp. i think on some of the other issues you unpacked i think hillary is not going to be as friendly as some on the progressive side of the ledger want her to be. i think she'll largely get away with it unless folks like you and others hold her feet to the fire to see exactly where she stands but at the end of the day i think she gets by. >> what do you want to hear from hillary clinton on monday? how far does she have to go? >> monday is about talking about what do we do in urban settings and how do we turn around places like detroit where the economy has passed some of these places by. i think we need to talk about the strategies that we need to develop the middle class and redevelop middle class in detroit. >> you can't redevelop urban cities in this country if you're going to support trade deals that's going to cut jobs. >> let me be really clear. ed you're right. the entire labor movement is against tpp for lots of different reasons. some in the labor movement are for keystone. some a

tpp is 90% done and she should join us in calling for that. we'll get the tpp when we can read it. for now, it's no on fast track. let's see what has been done. >> genevieve wood what is the strategy of the republicans at this point? you've got 85% of house members on the democratic side 85% of the democratic members on the house side saying they don't want this. but yet the president is still pushing it. it's really -- it's one for the archives politically, isn't it? >> well it is. last time i looked at numbers, 50 to 20 democrats said they were going to be for it. republicans have said look at least 30 house democrats have to vote to get this thing through. there are a lot of republicans who don't like it. a lot of conservative republicans don't want to give the president fast track authority because they don't trust him because of what he's done in immigration and other issues. but right now, he is relying upon republican support. even if they don't vote for this thing and it goes through, i think hillary still has to make some answers. won't people in the democratic party stand

can your union, and can you support hillary clinton if she supports tpp? >> i think it would be hard regardless of the party, to support a candidate who supports tpp, as we now know it. obviously still a secret. where just as importantly to support fast track, and we don't know what's in fast track. we need populous politics. we need candidates who say i care about jobs. net jobs. imports. killing jobs in america. not just a few export jobs. that we care about pay and how our pay gets held down. i think it's essential that she speak out on these issues. >> essential that she speaks out. i'm hearing that in a lot of corners of the country from a number of different groups. so here comes senator elizabeth warren asking these questions. what kind of pressure do you think that puts on hillary clinton? >> i think what senator warren is doing is great for all of us. as she said in the clip you played, we now have 500 cases under the settlement. this is a reality. and cases like petroleum getting $2 billion from ecuador because they want to save the environment.

fast track has to happen before the tpp. but it's greasing the skids for what many people think is a bad deal. >> because the tpp after six years of these closed door negotiations is almost done well over half the chapters are literally signed and sealed the others have a word or two to go really the vote for fast track is a proxy that you're willing to rubber stamp this version of this new orleans trade agreement. i think the reason that senator warren has really helped bring the argument to the forefront is that for the last year and a half, a lot of the agreement's been done. and because you've had congresswoman deloro and thousands in small business and faith and human rights and internet freedom activists talking about the pieces of the final tpp that have leaked. we know for instance why it was his right. the agreement has the investment offshore incentives that might be part of nafta. that chapter leaked. the government accountability office totally flopped. we need that last year. >> mike froman would take serious is

tpp. would be one of the largest trade deals in our country's history. president obama doesn't want your representative, your congressional member to lay a finger on it. the white house is pushing for trade promotion authority. they want the ability to give the stamp of approval. congress would be restricted to just an up or down vote no negotiation, no debate. only big corporations have had a say in this 12-country negotiated deal. workers know it's as bad as nafta and worse the nurses united say fast tracking would be a real bad deal for public health, a public health disaster. tpp limits the import and access to medicine. labor unions have never been more unified and united. they of course claim this trade deal would be a job killer. environmental organizations are also rejecting fast track authority. the agreement weakens our safeguards when it comes to climate and trade enforcement. the house is on recess. and the senate is stuck, according toen senator orrin hatch. we may not see a debate until april. where is it right now? senator sherrod brown of

it's no secret why nike is supporting the tpp. so in the 11th hour the only secret continues to be the actual details of the deal. and apparently the white house is putting a lot of pressure on environmental groups flat-out telling them we've been with you on climate change you've got to give us this one. we'll have that story, of course, tomorrow night. right now, let's bring in leo gerard president of the united steelworkers international. mr. gerard good to have you with us. this is a fevered pitch effort by the white house and the president. what do you think of it, going to nike? >> look i think it's a terrible mistake as you do and i do. we support the president on almost everything else. this is a terrible mistake. nike represents everything that's wrong with global trade. in fact, nike has publicly said that they're forthis this deal because they'll be able to export from vietnam with duty-free. 1% 1% of nike's employees are in america. and we now know that nike at one point in time had moved from china and other countries

nurses united voiced their opposition to fast tracking tpp on capitol hill today. the health workers say it threatens access to medicine and wages. the momentum is definitely spreading on the sfat floor. senate floor. >> these agreements are loaded with corporate handouts that weaken our nation's ability to chart its own course. the last thing we need mr. president, is another nafta. >> the alfcio came out stronger than ever. he made a simple statement about what fast tracking tpp means for americans. >> lost jobs and lower wages. that's it. # # # # #. >> labor leaders joined together in atlanta over the past few days. leaders discussed fighting the wave of big money coming into the election and the right to work legislation in states especially in wisconsin. the push for union busting measures is moving at a lightning speed. wisconsin republicans cut short a public hearing on right to work yesterday. and we're concerned about protests from labor supporters. >> we got wind of threats being made to disrupt the hearings. it was a different crowd of people coming to t

and obviously, we have strong disagreements on the tpp. where i think the president has made his biggest mistake is that after his historic and brilliant 2008 presidential campaign in which he rallied the american people, brought young people into the political process what he did after he was elected is kind of say, hey, thanks a lot. i appreciate it. you're gone. and now i'm going to sit down and argue and try to negotiate with john boehner. i think that was a terrible mistake because here's the truth, ed. and i'm the only candidate maybe to ever say this. no president, not the smartest best human being in the world can do it alone. you cannot take on this the power that is in washington, the billionaires and the lobbyists and the military industrial complex, all this money and power, you can't do it. you need a mass movement of americans who are looking in congress and say directly if you don't make college education affordable, you're out of here. because we know it's going on. if you don't end these huge tax breaks for the rich you're

. >> every union leader in this country has said the tpp is a direct shot and a threat to the middle class. hillary clinton was flanked by lee sanders and randy winegarden. it would have been the perfect time and setting for hillary clinton to side with labor, but she's on her own schedule. today marked the final two scheduled public appearances on hillary clinton's calendar. it's most likely the last time we'll hear from clinton before she announced her next steps in early april. let's hope there's a lot of transparency when it comes to trade, jobs, and the middle class. joining me tonight jonathan alter and genevieve woods. >> the unions understand that there are such stark differences between democrats and republicans now. wasn't always the case but now there really are. in the general election between hillary and whoever the republican nominee is they'll be very strong for hillary. it's in the meantime when some of these other candidates they're not going to get money unless they're against tpp. hillary is going to be bobbing and weaving for a year and a half on this. i was just

but tpp is 40% of the world's economy. this is a $400 million program. it is peanuts compared to what this trade agreement is. and republicans -- i mean i don't trust boehner on it. republicans are willing to jetson these workers. and jedsen. >> and unfortunately too many republicans -- >> do you think obama is going to move forward on this taa? republicans have given us no reason to believe what they say. okay? >> yeah. >> and so number one, where is the president going to land on this? and number two, just what kind of a package are we talking about? >> i met with some labor department people today and asked them to convince the president and others in the administration to put the same effort into the minimum wage in enforcement of overtime. and creating building trades jobs and many other jobs in the highway bill to put that same effort into that as the president and his allies and the administration put into tpa. i don't know if the president will sign this without taa. i don't know. somebody's got to have the conversation with him before they vote

he had a message for unions who are against the tpp. listen to this. >> the way i say to unions is if they want to sell to another country, they go make it in that country. outsource jobs into that country. getting a trade agreement means you eliminate those barriers that allow you to make it in america and send it overseas because you removed the trade barriers that prohibit that from happening. >> your response? >> i my response is that very little of the transpacific partnership is about trade barriers. 75% of the chapters are about protecting multi-national investors. as keith ellison just said the companies that are rich on this are the ones that move jobs from the united states to countries like vietnam with guarantees that vietnam will do nothing to change labor rights or environmental rights and damage the profits of those companies. that's the investor state dispute settlement that guarantees those future profits. so he's got it exactly backwards. no surprise because he takes his instructions from the u.s. chamber of commerce.

does it darken the door of those who don't want the tpp? >> well this whole fight has been a situation where in the face of the public polling shows a majority of democrats, republicans and independents opposing fasttrack, the folks in congress and the corporate coalition in the white house have resorted to a bunch of unbelievably byzantine gimmicks and the most recent one basically was this business of splitting up the vote into three pieces which you know they got hung by their own petard. that went down. this newest gimmick is basically for the first time in the history of the house of representatives to take a counterresolution, which is kind of putting a vote you don't like the results of you can put it basically in the freezer for two days. it's called a motion to reconsider. that's a two-day window to come back and vote. well, it didn't get any better in two days. congress democrats and republicans alike, are still saying no thank you. what they did today is they did, unprecedented, a deal to have this two-day resolution stretched al
