was something more subtle than just isis taking over mosul. you have very strong turkey, kurdish, iraqi relations that have evolved more significantly since 2008, grounded in energy sector, relations, commercial ties and security issues. one of the key components of this, and this was also a personal relationship. it was a barzani/president erdogan tie. not only in the pkk but pushing the ties. and it would help barzani be the king of all the kurds, which is part of his dreams. that was one part of it, but the other part is there were turkey/pkk relations. and they were to help the peace process which still seems to be stymied. and then the third part is the whole kurdistan region and the pkk. and as we all know or some of us may know, these two trends have been at each other in certain forms between cooperation, tacit agreement, leaving the pkk in the mountains in northern iraq, and also in direct competition with each other. and that competition still exists today. that is to say, the two main nationalist trends within the kurdish movement are those led by the pkk and barzani.

, and the president of turkey next door, are both glumly conceding that isil will soon take kobane. why is turkey letting that happen? it's inside story. >> hello, i'm ray suarez. the he's almostic state of iraq and the levant, isil, has disrupted the long-settled map of the middle east. the guerrilla force trying to establish what it callings the islamic state is fighting the government of syria, the u.n. air force and kurdish in syria, and now a new alliance in middle east forces in iraq. with all that firepower aimed at them, isil is still on the verge of taking a major town on the border between syria and turkey. how it's happening, why it's happening is all part of the tangled story of friends and enemies in one of the world's most complicated neighborhoods. islamic state in iraq and the levant or isil, have bee sieged the syrian town of kobane for weeks. the reports from the kurdish fighters defending it say that 9,000 have pushed the defense. so close that the turkish troops have been wearily watching but have not yet engaged in the fight. >> you see what we go through. they

jurisdictions. so take, for example -- i mean the most recent case was turkey, right, during the last election. there was a twitter situation in which people were tweeting out things about a candidate running for office and turkey shut down the entire service of twitter. now, that has since been worked out. twit strbak up and running in turkey. i think youtube and facebook and others have faced similar situations in different markets. so, for example, there are parts of the world where it's against the law to say something bad about the prophet muhammad. and people do it on facebook or twitter or whatever all the time. it's up to those service providers that are, again, simply a service on the larger internet, to work with those governments and where they can, if within the concerts of their ethics and terms of service, work something out to ensure that there's a mutual respect of service delivery. but, again, i don't want to conflate that with the idea that there are islands of nonconnectedness in the world. technologically that's simply not happening. there is no armageddon in that
