wendy davis alone, sort of. there were thousands of supporters streaming into the capitol all day long. there were wrong lines to get in -- long lines to see her. starting at 11:00 a.m., things went smoothly about halfway through her planned filibuster, she was challenged by one of her republican colleagues, he accused her of going off topic. the lieutenant governor presiding over the chamber at that time agreed with the republican senator and wendy davis had strike one against her. an hour later they did it again. when a fellow democrat asked for some of her testimony to be repeated. a fellow senator helped her put on a back brace. republicans objected to that. that was strike two, she can only have three of these things go against her before it kills her filibuster. she already had two strikes of the three she's allotted with five more hours still to go. it's basically zero margin for error under a micro scope of a room full of adversaries. even the president of the united states was watching according to twit

because what's really unfortunate is that you haven't learned from wendy davis' example. she recognizes that all she has been able to accomplish was thanks in part to having what senator davis called the privilege of making a choice. you, on the other hand, have chosen to use your privilege to hurt instead of help women and families. and yet, another special session to resurrect the bill that senator davis and her pro-choice ally succeeded in killing, to restore what you called, quote, the breakdown of decorum and decency. okay, spare me the decency talk. because, really, what would you know about decency? what's decent about refusing a medicaid expansion, leaving 1.5 million poor, elderly, and disabled texases without health coverage. there was nothing decent about defunding your state's family planning, leaving 140,000 texas women without health services and forced to carry 30,000 unintended pregnancies to term. and punctuating all that this week by saying, the louder they scream, the more we know we are getting something done. be careful, governor, you're looking a lot

wendy davis joins me now live and she is sitting. a -- that was, i mean, a marathon filibuster, no food, water, breaks for all those hours. how are you even awake today? >> i'm running on adrenaline today. it was an amazing moment for democracy in texas yesterday, it truly was. >> what was it like? standing for that long, speaking for that long, not going to the bathroom, just -- i mean, what is it like to filibuster for 11 hours? >> i under estimated how difficult it would be both physically and mentally. about two hours in i realized i was in for a long day. my back started hurting pretty early on, and began to really hurt as the hours ticked by, but there were so many people in the capital yesterday, anderson, a record number of people. they literally had to lock the doors because they had filled our enormous texas capital to capacity, and their energy kept me going throughout the day. they were amazing. >> it was a remarkable scene. thousands flocking to the state capital and tens of thousands joined online including the presiden

. >> after 13 hours, wendy davis's filibuster ended on a technicality. the legislature rushed to vote but not in time to beat the midnight deadline. the crowd that had been there to support her all day saved their biggest cheers for last. [ cheers and applause ] >>> good day. i am andrea mitchell in washington where the supreme court has now ruled that same sex couples cannot be denied the right to marry according to the constitutional guarantee of equal protection under the law. it's that simple. the court punted on california's prop 8. that, in effect, let a lower court ruling stand and opened the door to the resumption of same-sex marriages in california. the twin victories led to celebrations from the steps of the supreme court where washington's gay men's chorus sang the national anthem, to greenwich village, to towns and burrows around the nations. let's go to nbc news justice correspondent pete williams live at the court. we're also joined by msnbc's rachel mad doe and fred sane is also at the court for us. pete, you were there for all of the dram
