florida, north carolina, wisconsin, early voting period was cut down to mere days. and in your state, 400,000 registered voters were purged from the roles without notice. so what are you keeping your eye on in 2017? >> well flatout shame. my republican colleagues have been trying to strip away voting rights across this country. the gutting of the vra, that is not the way a representative democracy should perform. and that certainly is not how people who are elected, who depend on people to vote for them for a living, should respond. and so we got to continue to push. i'm hoping that democrats will continue to push and also some republicans who believe that the vra needs to be strengthened. we have to do that. many of these things, this is an omni partisan. the whole notion we have one woman, one man, one vote, is an omni partisan issue. and the democracy that all of those beautiful words, how we praise the foundations of this country is really based on every day women and men in this country being able to exercise their right to vote, being able to express their wheel through the pow

, minnesota, iowa and wisconsin will continue to move in the republican direction because of your thesis here. this isn't a dead cat bounce for the republicans. or is it? >> i think -- >> you don't like that phrase. it's old school. the idea is that the dead cat bounces more time. >> if you look at south carolina where you had democratic senators and they won for a time, those states were growing and you see whites growing in the strengtd for voting republican. you see republicans gaining more white voters. and this is the thing right here with trump. he won 1% more than mitt romney, but a small percentage of the overall electorate. i would argue this is the last time we will see someone elected president at 46%. i think it was an outliar that is problematic for republicans because of the conversation they had to have in their party about how they win the future. they are not going to have it now. there is a doubling down on quite frankly the same sentiment that donald trump has been talking about. i don't think that helps the republican party long-term and i don't think it helps

wisconsin where democrats usually win and they usually vote democratic and they went for trump this year, was that a problem with hillary clinton as the messenger? >> i don't think you can pin it on one person. we need to do a better job of talking about the values that pull us together. we allowed whole kgs of values. take freedom, for example. we allowed libertarians to own the conversation about freedom. we have to be taking about fairness. in a twisted way, donald trump is exactly right when he said there was unfairness. obviously not in the ways he was talking about. who can look at an election in a jerry mandered district? we can't be the party saying no, the system is just fine. we have to be the party saying we know there is a lot of issues in the system and here's why our ideas are better. unless we talk about the individual conditionedidates, the less they are talking about yourself. the more we are talking about the people that are hired to serve. the more likely we are to connect with the folks in middle america who are going to decide. >> what about the folks and the voters

all going to be okay. and now we don't need to go to wisconsin for seven months. what's there to do in wisconsin? that's what we have on our side, and that's why we lost, even though we won. and that's why, if the democratic party, if these people who allowed this catastrophe to happen when we had the majority of the americans on our side, if they don't have it together like tomorrow it is going to be one -- i can't say it on basic cable, but come january 21, it's going to be a real legislative bloodbath on capitol hill, and liberals and hillary voters and democrats and just people in general are going to be like, their heads are going to spin when they see just how good trump and the republicans are at getting everything done or attempting to do t and a lot of people i know, especially in place like michigan are also going to be in shock that he wasn't kidding around when he said he was going to do these things. he's actually going to do them. so we better get ready. >> let's squeeze in a little break here, and then when we come back, we're going to do your five rules for all of us

in michigan and wisconsin who voted for him who are going to be quite disappointed. >> nina, what do you think of ira's point there, that you have to change the policies that would give washington power to reduce some of the money flowing in. >> well, let me add ohio to his list. this really comes down to political will. now, president-elect trump ran on the whole notion of draining the swamp. yet, as you highlighted in an earlier segment, his cabinet is worth about $4.5 billion, with a "b," the fact that they are selling off and i put that in air quotes, opportunities to either talk about to the president-elect or people in his cabinet just reinforces more of the same. and that's what the american people are -- they're tire of that. politicians run saying one thing, of which president-elect said that he wasn't your ordinary politician, and then when it comes down to it, they do something entirely different. and there is going to be hell to pay, i believe, if president-elect trump does not follow through on his promises to the working poor and middle class in this country. and it sho

almost 3 million more votes than trump. trump obviously saw something in wisconsin and michigan and pennsylvania that the clinton campaign didn't see until it was too late. you know, we can dissect this forever. and i don't think we're going to know until a lot more information comes in. >> sarah, let me ask you this, no slight is too small for donald trump to tweet his response to. he brought up michelle obama's name after her interview with oprah. now he's lashing out during transition time at bill clinton. we have attacks going on around the world. at what point does he let go of doing that and move on to the stuff that most americans hope and expect their president to be dealing with? >> well, people keep wanting donald trump to let go of thing, and yet they forget just yesterday democrats were urging the electoral college not to honor his electoral victory. so he did tweet about isis and he did tweet that they were going to take on islamic radicalism and terrorism. but the fact of the matter is, democrats kept saying before the election that he wasn't going to accept the result
