1:00 am
>> announcer: this is cnn breaking news. breaking news this morning. a shooting at a bar in thousand oaks, california. all of the details as we cover them. we have a breaking situation. good morning. welcome to "early start." i'm christine romans. >> i'm dave briggs. it is thursday, november 8th. it is 4:00 a.m. in the east. 1:00 a.m. in los angeles. police were called 11:20 p.m. california time.
1:01 am
a mass shooting incident ongoing at the bar in thousand oaks. information still coming in. here is what we know. the attacker forced his way into the borderline bar & grill in thousand oaks. reportedly shot a bouncer or barman. what is the borderline bar & grill? a large country dance bar popular with pepperdine and cal students. cal lutheran is just down the street. an official on the scene says a half dozen are injured. >> conditions are not yet known. we are gathering information. one witness is telling kwca telling a suspect walked up and started shooting and setoff a smoke bomb. these details all need to be confirmed and began shooting.
1:02 am
tactical officers raced to the scene. a few more words about the bar borderline bar & grill. 2,500 square feet. hundreds of people were inside. look, this was college night. wednesday night college night at the bar. you have students from pepperdine and cal lutheran who are frantically trying to find out if their friends were inside. there were lots of reports of college students fleeing the scene. >> still an active situation. csu channel islands is another college in the area. imagine hundreds of young people dancing to country music. line dancing often takes place. could be hundreds of people on the dance floor at anytime. here is what we know from the local captain of the ventura county sheriff's office with the update. >> so about 11:20 this evening,
1:03 am
we received a call of shots fired at the borderline bar & grill here in thousand oaks. our first deputies arrived on scene, they also heard shots fired. our deputies have been searching the area. it is an active scene as you see behind me. we can confirm there are several people who have been injured inside the bar & grill, including one deputy sheriff who with was transported. i cannot tell you the condition of the deputy or those injured inside. i can tell you this is still a very active scene and we have obviously dozens of personnel behind me now that are trying to get to the bottom of what happened and to neutralize the threat if the threat is still active. >> do you know? >> it is an active situation? >> it is an active situation. we can't consider this situation under control at this point. we have lots of personnel on
1:04 am
scene. including special weapons and tacticals and police department. >> the shooter could be alive and could be a threat? >> yes. >> can you give us any sense of how many people were there? >> i would say about half a dozen were injured inside the location. >> shot? >> yes. >> okay. >> once more, the status of the shooter? >> i can't tell you much about the shooter at this point. we are still looking for the shooter. we cannot confirm the shooter is in custody. >> the number of victims? mass casualty means from 11 to 20? >> i'm hearing about six at this point. >> are there more inside? >> i would say hundreds, but i cannot confirm the exact number. >> as far as you know only six victims total? >> that is what i can confirm at this point. this is very preliminary. our deputies are still processing it to ensure the shooter is neutralized and the
1:05 am
victims are taken care of. >> you said on arrival. you described a dynamic scene. >> when deputies arrived on scene, they responded to the shots fired call. when they got here, they still heard the shots. >> one witness said they may have thrown smoke bombs in. >> i have not heard about the smoke bombs. i don't know about that. >> has anyone been confirmed killed or has anyone died? >> i can't tell you the status of those who were shot is at this point. >> when is the last time you had a shots fired incident in the community? >> it has been quite some time? >> thousand oaks is known for its safety. this obviously changes everything. >> thousand oaks is a safe community. it is a very unusual incident. >> do you train for active shooters? >> we train all the time for active shooters.
1:06 am
we have law enforcement for all agencies. we work together seamlessly to neutralize that threat. we are working with the state and other municipalities. >> when is the last time you heard a shot fired? >> that's a tough question. i can't tell you specifically when it was especially in this neighborhood. >> again, to recap, this is late wednesday evening and the call comes in at 11:20 someone entered the bar shooting. one report of a smoke bomb. full of students wednesday night. college night. cal lutheran is on the edge of the ventura freeway. >> enormous country line dancing bar. that was the 12:30 a.m. update. an hour after the call came in to the police department. the local coverage there was zooming in on a body just outside the borderline bar &
1:07 am
grill. eye witnesses said there were hundreds of people on the floor at any given time. a witness said a smoke bomb was thrown into the bar. let's hear now from some of the witnesses. >> i was to the front door and talking to my step dad. i just started hearing these big pops. pop, pop, pop. there were probably three or four. i hit the ground. i look up. the security guard's dead -- i don't want to say dead -- he was shot and he was down. the gunman was throwing smoke grenades all over the place. i saw him point to the back of the cash register. he just started firing. he kept firing. i ran out the front door. i hear chairs thrown out the window. i hear people trying to get out the window. the gunman went behind the cash register. there were probably 12 shots
1:08 am
before i got out the front door. i go out. i come back in to see if my step dad's okay. i hear him yelling. the gunman had a beard. he looked middle eastern or so. he was wearing a hat and black jacket. i think he ehad glasses on. prescription glasses. he had a big handgun. shots were firing. >> everyone was hanging out. all of a sudden we heard a bunch of shots obviously from a semiautomatic rifle. the police showed up. three of them went to the door. currently there's one officer down as they were breaching the front entrance. the other two pulled out. one, i think, is still in there. now i think about it, there are probably two officers down. only one came out.
1:09 am
so they both pulled out. he is still holed up inside. >> you hear the shock in their voices. calm and composed, but shaken here. the scene is still active, we are told. we heard from the officials at ventura county sheriff's captain at 3:45. the first call of shots fired at 11:20. six people shot. including a deputy. not confirming any status. this is all preliminary. it is important in breaking situations, dave, some of the eyewitness testimony. it is a small bit of what happened there. sometimes the early information can be corrected. >> again, that sheriff's office captain said six which would be surprising considering hundreds of people dancing on that floor at any given time. abc 7, the local affiliate in
1:10 am
los angeles, says eyewitnesss describe the shooter as a middle eastern male with a beard. to christine's point, that witness account can certainly change as we move forward. black hair. black trenchcoat. described as a middle eastern male at this hour. 1:09 pacific time right now. >> this is the ventura freeway. a big country and western bar. wednesday night was college night there. among the eyewitnesss were college students from cal lutheran and the pepperdine newspaper is writing about this because this was a popular place with pepperdine students. there would have been hundreds of people there. >> an update from abc eyewitness news in california. they are reporting one sheriff's officer was transported to the hospital. authorities say the suspect may still be on the loose.
1:11 am
let's bring in steve moore. retired special agent. steve, good morning to you. it is 1:10 pacific time. the first calls came in at 11:20 p.m. pacific time. what do you make of this? is there a shooter on the loose? >> yeah, if they say it is still active, yeah. i also see people walking on the roof. that's indicative of possibly still looking for the person. they have probably with the ventura county sheriff's office a more robust and well trained law enforcement agency in southern california. i would expect they will be doing this the right way. if they have said that it is not
1:12 am
resolved, then they are either looking for the primary or a secondary suspect. in these situations, you will always be told there is a secondary suspect by someone. i'm not sure that they are not doing this out of abundance of caution. they are still -- right there, looking at these
1:13 am
>> if you have hundreds of college students and somebody in the black trenchcoat to ditch that coat, how are they handling all of the witnesses and the young people who were there dancing? >> excellent question. what they will do is as much as is humanly possible, they will seeing segregate anybody out, at this time of night, especially at the borderline bar & grill where it is easily cordoned off. all they it is in a very -- although it is in a very popular place bordered by several roads to make it easy to get everybody corralled, once they do that, they go person by person and identify them and search them
1:14 am
and interview them. as you just alluded to because people can drop the clothes they were wearing. especially an outer garment and just blend in with the crowd. >> but, steve, judging by what we are seeing the people standing around traumatized, there are hundreds of people standing around, but the police describe it as an active situation. you must realize the shooter has been detained or shot judging by the fact that police are allowing people to stand around and reporters to stand around right next to the bar. >> from what i'm seeing, they are -- where the people are standing is probably a block or two away. yeah. i can't imagine from their actions that they don't have an idea somehow on where the main
1:15 am
shooter is and maybe they're looking for other shooters. >> steve, hang on. this is the video i'm referencing. officers without guns drawn. that, to me, doesn't look like an active shooting situation. does it to you? >> not at all. i see one of the tactical team guys carrying his helmet. that would indicate to me this is not as active a situation as they are talking about to the press right now. you are absolutely right. they are already putting up crime tape which to me means you don't do that until you have a scene to cordon off. they have gone to the investigative stage. i'm saying that based on the pictures i see. they have the triage mats out in
1:16 am
the lot which is southwest or northwest of the location. those mats are empty which is a phenomenal good piece of news that you don't have victims in the triage mats. they set up mobile command post which is on the complete other side of borderline. there is caution being used and displayed, but it doesn't mean that there is something going on right at the moment. >> steve, talk about the bar. we know it is a country western bar and grill. wednesday night was college night. it could have been full of young people. these are the kinds of soft targets which are so difficult to secure when you have a crowd situation and someone with a firearm. >> yes. you are not going to be able to
1:17 am
defend a soft target like that. especially if you really actually had somebody go in there and as i have seen reported attack a security guard and begin throwing smoke grenades into the place. again, this is all preliminary and witnesses are reliable at this case. if you have that issue, this doesn't appear to be somebody getting mad and coming back. the crowd is not one that would tend to on college night bring out people who would use violence to end an argument. based on what i hear, it could be a very well planned thing. >> students as young as 18 could be in the bar that night according to the bar's web site. 18 and older. according to "the l.a. times" the task force has been
1:18 am
dispatched. also 30 shots fired. what does that tell you about this handgun as reported and the fbi's joint terrorism task force? would they typically be dispatched? >> yeah. i was the supervisor on that task force for years. they will be on their way out. again, part of the reason is the fbi does handle mass shootings. there are reports that indicate that the person might have been middle eastern. i don't put a lot of credence on that based on the fact that early reports are usually incorrect. you can't ignore that. so there are going to be a bunch of law enforcement here. one thing about thousand oaks, every block, you have a police officer or federal agent living. this is where law enforcement
1:19 am
lives in the northern last aros angeles area. this is where they go because this is statistically one of the safest towns. >> thousand oaks is a nice little community there. quickly, at this point, can we assume first responders are clearing out folks who are hiding? employees or customers? >> that is what you would be doing at this point if you believe your suspects -- most of the indication is your suspects are down, then you are emptying the place and making sure everybody is secure. i don't see that level of concern at this point. you would see teams coming in and out because it is a very exhausting process to look for survivors and people who are hiding. you bring people in and out like you bring players off the bench
1:20 am
just to keep them fresh. right now, i see nobody coming out. nobody really going in. you would see tactical teams moving in and out. i do not see that at this point. >> steve moore, cnn law enforcement contributor helping us understand the scene. the borderline bar & grill in thousand oaks, california. stay close. thank you. >> we will check in with you later. let's check in with betty herra. her son was in the bar and grill at the time. we are happy to report her son is okay. betty, good morning to you. how is your son? what did he tell you of what he witnessed? >> he goes there on a regular basis. this is an innocent place for young kids to go have a good time. he was standing across the way and a man walked in dressed in all black. came in and started shooting.
1:21 am
he got the girl in the front. he says he shot her. he ducked down. he had his girlfriend's hand. he fell on the ground. he was dragging her out. he called me hysterical. i was on the way there. he said don't come there. it is a tragic scene. i lived here my whole life and never witnessed anything like it here. we are a very safe community. it is tragic. it's very tragic. >> your son told you, betty, he saw the young woman who worked there at the bar inside the front door being shot? >> inside the front door. just walked in and shot her. >> just awful. he heard the gunman continue to shoot after that? >> yes. evidently he jumped behind the
1:22 am
bar. he was throwing some kind of smoke bombs. he had a beard. he was wearing a beanie. he is saying the things they are saying are true. >> thank you so much. betty harrah. we will get an update here from law enforcement on the ground. let's listen to the update. >> the shooter is confined to the facility. there is no threat to the general public outside the bar and grill. i don't know the status of the shooter. if he has been captured or neutralized. we don't feel he is out of the bar and grill at this time. >> have you determined what he brought inside? smoke bombs? what do you know? >> i know only of the guns. i heard of the smoke bombs at the pressor earlier, but i don't know about that. i don't have the status of any of their injuries. >> including the deputy?
1:23 am
>> i don't have the status of the deputy. >> is the location clear? we heard there may be people in the attic. >> we have deputies going through it now. my understanding is that there is -- i didn't know about people in the attic. >> can you spell? >> k-u-r-e-d-j-i-a-n. first name is garo. g-a-r-o. >> is someone in law enforcement injured? >> a deputy was shot with the ventura county sheriff's office. >> responding to the scene? >> yes. >> was it someone who engaged the suspect? >> i assume so. i don't know that. >> do you have information about the security guard who was injured? >> i don't have information on any of those injured other than the deputy that was injured. that's all i know. >> you don't have conditions on
1:24 am
the victims? >> no conditions on any of the victims. >> 11 total? >> yes. >> are you expecting that number to grow? >> i would guess if anything that number would go up. these are, again, preliminary numbers. i want to give you numbers as opposed to saying several. that number earlier was six. it has gone up to 11. that is all i can say at this point. i don't have that information. i don't know of anyone who is deceased or not transported. >> as far as you know 11 people are in the hospital? >> i don't know if they were transported or if they are here or what their condition is right now. i don't know that answer. >> what are you saying to the families? there are so many people. friends and loved ones worried about the status. when will they know? >> that will take some time. it's not a scene that is safe where people can go in and out
1:25 am
of at this point. we have investigators looking to make sure that the scene inside the nightclub is safe and it will take some time. i don't have a time estimate for that. >> do you know how this call came? was it someone in the bar who called or left? >> i don't know where the call came from. what i can tell you is the call was shots fired. that is what our deputies responded to. that is what they heard when they arrived on the scene. >> did you check the security guard on arrival? maybe an altercation? >> i don't have that level of detail. it is rapidly unfolding at this point. we are trying to give you the information of the incident. i have not gotten to talk to investigators at this point about the level of the incident.
1:26 am
we don't feel the shooter has left the bar and grill. whatever it is, it was contained in the bar and grill. we don't fweeel there is a thre to the community. >> the shooter is down at this point? >> i don't know if he has been transported or captured. what i can tell you is we don't feel there is a threat to the residents. >> a big update. >> so, look, we were hearing an update from the captain in the ventura county sheriff's office confirming a deputy was shot. a deputy with the ventura county sheriff's office. no details about how it happened. this is all preliminary. it is rapidly unfolding. it has been a couple of hours since the first call came in at 11:20 local time.
1:27 am
they say the gunman is confined. the captain is not saying what that means exactly. if he has been shot or arrested. he has been confined inside the location. they don't feel a further threat to the community. >> the captain said the sheriff's deputy has been shot and transported to the hospital. this is the borderline bar & grill. pepperdine students were at the bar at the time of the shooting. i can confirm cal lutheran students, several were at the bar at the time of the shooting. right now, 11 reports of shootings from the sheriff's officer. the black hair and black trenchcoat. >> betty harrah lives nearby. her son was inside. he was okay, but he went running out of the venue with his
1:28 am
girlfriend after shots were fired. betty, are you still with us? >> yes. >> tell me a little bit more about what your son says he saw and how quickly this unfolded. >> you want to tell them? >> hi. what's your name? >> i'm holden harrah. >> i'm glad you made it out. >> it was a tragic event that happened in a long time. >> tell me what happened at the time. were you dancing? >> no, i was on the opposite side of the bar. i was with a few friends. i go there every week. i have been attending there six months. you go to hang out with your friends and have fun as young adults. unfortunately what happened tonight and what i actually saw with my two eyes was a gentleman
1:29 am
who walked in the front door and shot the girl that was right behind the counter. i see this girl every single time i'm there. i don't know her name. someone to make small conversation with and say hi. we were starting to get familiar with each other. the first two gunshots hit her. i don't know if she's alive. >> we are so sorry, holden. we know how difficult this must be. i can't imagine what it was like to be inside that bar at the time. did you see the shooter? did you make anything out? >> yes. i saw a gentleman wearing a black trench looking coat. he had a beard. he was wearing glasses. and within seconds he went and
1:30 am
walked through the door and pulled the gun out and fired twice. then there was about three or four other shots that i did hear, but i was already out of the building at the time. i am in shock over what i saw with my eyes tonight. >> was it dark inside the bar? >> there's lights. it is a little party. people are dancing. music's going. then it's nice and casual. this guy came out of nowhere and came out with a gun and shot people. in thousand oaks, california. that's what is really blowing my mind. it's a really safe area. >> yeah. a wonderful community. a very safe community. >> wonderful community. >> absolutely. >> we're known as the safe haven. you know what i mean? >> we are hearing reports of smoke bombs thrown into the borderline bar & grill. did you see that? >> i was already out of the
1:31 am
building at the time. i did not see smoke bombs. i was around people i knew i was with and i was in the process of getting the hell out of there. i did for sure see the gentleman come in and shoot his gun off. i saw it with my own two eyes. >> how many shots did you hear before you got out of there? it sounds like your fight or flight mechanism kicked in. >> i heard about four or five. >> four or five. there are reports of some 30 shots fired by another eyewitness according to "the l.a. times." if you could, holde nexn, this difficult moment, but could you describe the crowd that is there on wednesday's college night? >> on wednesdays, it is a country theme bar. country music and people dressed in country attire. 18 and up on this night.
1:32 am
there's no alcohol. only for 21 plus, of course. it's a country theme. >> you have -- >> i have known these people for a long time. >> every wednesday? >> we always have been really close and really good people. >> are you a local college student and what colleges attend the bar? >> it is a mixed. i go to moorpark college. i go from ventura county to cal ba abassas. -- calabassas. cal lutheran. >> pepperdine. >> it is hard for me to talk. i'm super traumatized. i'm really shaking right now. >> thank you so much for your time. >> something i have never experienced in my life.
1:33 am
>> holden, we are sad for you. we are sorry for your friends. we hope they got out okay. thank you for your time. >> thank you. be safe tonight. >> thank you. not what you want to have happen. not what a kid should go through. >> far too many college students and young people have experienced it. even elementary students in the most recent years. we appreciate holden harrah joining us. for you just joining us 4:33 eastern time. 1:33 pacific time. a mass shooting in thousand oaks, california northwest of los angeles. information is still coming in. here is what we know. the attacker forced his way into the borderline bar & grill in thousand oaks. a huge country and western dance bar popular with pepperdine and cal lutheran and moorpark college students attend.
