twitter barrage extreme even by his standards. the question is why. he was busy lurching between grievances. gm and the autoworkers union, snl reruns, hillary clinton, robert mueller, even fox news and the late senator john mccain. that got a ton of pushback. so he did it again. >> the president criticizing the late senator for his ties to the russian dossier. and also going after mccain for his vote appealing obamacare, even calling him last in his class at annapolis. a strong response from mccain's daughter, she tweeted no one will ever love you the way they loved my father. i wish i had been given more saturdays with him. maybe spend your with your family instead of twitter obsessing over mine. and here is a prime example of the control trump has over his party. senator lindsey graham, mccain's closest friend in the senate, stopped short of criticizing the president for those comments.

this has little to do with it if you take a look, if they had protection inside, the results would have been far better. they are attacking us because we are speaking the truth, changing people's minds and proving every day that our policies work. i get attacked, you do also. i get attacked all the time. in fact come to think of it, who gets attacked more than me? >> but on a subject of radical islam, the president sounds drastically different. >> donald j. trump is calling for a total shutdown of muslims entering the united states until our country's representatives can figure out what the hell is going on. i think islam hates us. there is something there that there is a tremendous hatred
there. cabinet officials in new zealand agreeing in principle to toughen gun laws in wake of the mosque attacks. the changes will be announced in about a week. family members are bracing now for the agony of claiming the remains of their loved ones. the first body now released by new zealand police. let's go live to christchurch and bring in ivan watson. it is just so awful, the world mourning this awful attack. what are we learning now? >> reporter: the world mourning and people mere in christ churnchurc church, it is after 10:00 and folks are coming up with bouquets, laying them here, messages that are so heartfelt that say they are us you c, yout divide us, this act of terrorist violence is not us. and embracing this country's tiny muslim minority, just 1% of
the population of new zealand is muslim. the target of a savage terrorist attack, the most deadly attack in new zealand's modern history. it killed 50 people. still people fighting for their lives down the road here in christ church oig hospital which has had to postpone other previously scheduled surgeries to keep focusing on keeping those people alive. the prime minister has said that the gun laws in this country will change and she will have proposals laid out within ten days of last friday's attack. meanwhile the police say that they believe this was the work of one man, the chief suspect a 28-year-old australian named brenton tarrant who appeared in court saturday facing one charge of murder. the authorities say there will be additional charges as well. in his own publications, he described himself as a white supremacist and the authorities
found him with five firearms in his car and two improvised explosive devices as wiell. he streamed the beginning of the attack on facebook. the prime minister here saying that social media sites have to do more to scrub these kind of images from the internet and they have charged an 18-year-old here in christchurch with spreading some of those images out on the internet and facebook says that it has removed 1.5 million copies of that video from their site in the first 24 hours after the attack took place. >> just awful. victims of all ages. all right. thank you so much for that, i n ivan. an act of kindness is being repaid in the aftermath of the mosque killings when 11 people were murdered in a pittsburgh synagogue last year, muslim
communities raised hundreds of thousands for the victims. now the jewish federation of pittsburgh is paying it forward setting up a fund for the victims in christchurch. the chairman of the board of the federation says, quote, unfortunately we are all too familiar with the devastating effect the mass shooting has on a faith community. more trouble for boeing in the wake of two deadly crashes of 737 max jets liners. the "wall street journal" reporting a grand jury has issued a broad subpoena as two federal offices probe the approval of the jets. they have found more similarities between the two crashes. for the latest, let's turn to melissa bell near paris where the black boxes are being examined. melissa, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. what we know for the time being is that those similarities that you were talking about between the two planes that crashed, one
in indonesia back in october and of course the one just after takeoff from ethiopia, it is the question of their trajectories where similarities have been seen by a number of the different,s looki organizationsg into this. and the question now will be those automated flights -- that automated flight software that was in this particular type of boeing, the 737 max 8, the result of having to compensate for the engines being further forward on the wing. was that software at fault in this latest crash as it was found to have been at fault in the crash of the lion air jet back in october. could boeing therefore in the wake of that crash have done more to ensure that the software was updated, upgraded, changed, corrected in time. but questions also this monday for the faa, the federal aviation administration this needs to answer questions about why some of that certification process was not kept in-house

president. why is the president going after john mccain and how do conservatives, those who just want the tax cuts and the conservative judges, how do they reconcile those attacks on an american hero who dead skated his life to this country? >> the interesting part of why he does this, he is angry.skates life to this country? >> the interesting part of why he does this, he is angry. there is no filter to president trump's bully pulpit. the strategy, he is now connecting it to the conspiracy theory about a washington that is out to get him. it is a deceased senator now connected to the mueller investigation. you could almost see the logic of what he wants to talk about. how do they justify it? this is partisanship. when you have really, really strong partisanship as you are seeing in the gop right now, absolutely nothing will break it. not even the president going after a deceased senator. >> you feel for his family, senator mccain's family. meghan mccain had a very strong response. i think it shows her anger that
her dad keeps coming up as sort of this punching bag for the president of the united states. no one will ever love you the way they loved my father, i wish i had been given more saturdays with him, maybe spend your with your. what was he doing obsessing on twitter? even some prominent conservatives were saying this is unnerving that the president seems to be veering from one gle grievance to another. >> there is the substance and how angry many people are, but there is also just the question of why is he doing this right now. why is he spending so much time consumed on twitter. and this becomes his executive time. we are literally dealing this weekend with something that happened overseas that is horrific and the implications here. but this is how he allocates very precious time. it is not as much presidents are like the rest of us. they don't have all weekend, you know, to do what they want. they are working 24/7. >> but this was an easy one for the president given this
opportunity to condemn islamphobia and show support for the muslims in new zealand and around the world. this is what the president said. >> do you think white nationalism is arising threat around the world? >> i don't really. i think that it is a small group of people that have very, very serious problems. >> that is his response and then mick mulvaney asked about the response by chris wallace, asked why didn't the president give a speech condemning islamphobia. here is the stunning response from mulvaney. >> the president is not a white supremacist. i'm not sure how many times we have to say that. >> that is the acting chief of staff who was not asked that question. he was not asked if he is a white supremacist. what do you make of that response? >> the very defensive response, it is hard to believe in presidential history this is where we are in 2019. part of it is about the lack of response from the president after the attack.
but part of it is a bigger issue. what is the language the president has been willing to use from the campaign right from today that often resonates with white nationalists and this has been a major source of criticism from charlottesville to new zealand. and clearly people in the administration are aware of it and they are thinking of it and they will answer it even if that is not exactly what is asked. >> that was an unforced error. >> i agree. i want to ask you about the snl attack, reruns by the way. the president then goes on to say should the fec are are on the fcc look into this. there must be collusion with democrats, blah, blah, blah. i don't mean to say blah, blah, blah dismissively, but it goes on. is he threatening a federal intervention of comedy shows because his feelings are hurt? >> basically it is bring back the fairness dock be trtrine foy instead of news. and these are silly in that that is not going to mahappen, but i is a form of intimidation.

remains of their loved ones. and let's go live to christchurch and bring in ivan watson. >> reporter: it is after 10:30 at night here and still there are people coming to show their respect and affection and love for the muslim community, that tiny community of 1% of new zealand's population that was so viciously targeted last friday here in christchurch. and those shows of love have come from the highest levels of government, from the prime minister of this country to ordinary people who continue to lay flowers and light candles and write handwritten signs saying we love you, you are us. the prime minister has announced that there will be new gun laws in response to the deadliest terror attack in new zealand's modern history. and that they will come some ten days after friday's attacks on
two mosques here in christchurch. the police say that they believe this was the work of one suspected terrorist, a 28-year-old australian namedbreo far just one count of murder. they believe both attacks on the two mosques were the work of this one man. now, one of the online shopping sites here, trade me, has announced that it is suspending at least temporarily the sale of semi automatic weapons. another company here called gun city has confirmed that it sold four firearms to the suspect all done legally. he had no previous criminal record. and he did have a gun permit in this country. as for the anguished families of 9 the 50 people killed, most are still waiting to receive their
loved oned back, es back. dealing with so many dead and wounded. >> ivan watson there in thank . more trouble for boeing. the "wall street journal" reporting a grand jury has issued a broad subpoena as two federal offices probe the development and approval of the jets. now investigators have found similarities, this is so key here, between the ethiopian airlines crash last week and the lion air accident last october both involving that plane. for the latest, let's turn to richard quest live for us in amsterdam. that is a big development that there are similaritiesflights. >> reporter: this is the first official confirmation that there is a link between the lion air crash and the ethiopian. and the similarities is all do
with the flight profile, the bra dramatic altitude changes that were seen in the flights. the difference speed var jagss, variations, the way that the flight did not gain speed or height as a normal flight would. and now the next stage is working out what happened, what was the similarities. what role did this so-called mcmca aviation system play. and also the authorities said that the -- the ethiopian authorities said that they would produce the preliminary report which they have to do by law within 30 days. and we will be watching very closely to see what recommendations they make about when the 737 max should be allowed to fly again. >> how long does it looks like these jets will be grounded? do we have any idea? >> reporter: no, we don't. boeing said in its statement
