U.S. Senate Sen. Minority Leader Schumer on Kavanaugh Confirmation CSPAN October 4, 2018 8:40pm-8:53pm EDT
we have a chance to do good and to underscore the basic tenet of fairness in our country. so i file cloture on the nomination yesterday evening and i will be proud to advance this nomination tomorrow. >> another morning in the senate another partisan diatribe coming from my good friend the majority leader. instead of looking at what happened at a young woman coming forward because she felt compelled, knowing she would risk so much on herself that has happened he blames somebody else. he blames the democrats. but r just remember doctor forward came forward before
judge kavanaugh was even nominated. doctor forward came forward before even knew of her allegations including one on the hotline from the washington post according to her testimony. and my colleague here has engaged in giant kabuki dance. he knows how believable doctor ford is. he knows how the american people the majority believe doctor ford are telling the truth rather than judge kavanaugh. he knows any focus on doctor ford would bring more feelings that judge kavanaugh is the wrong person for the supreme court. but her credibility is greater than judge kavanaugh's so he
ncattacks the democrats with public rancor and basically the fundamental lack of getting to the truth in this chamber. i would like to ask the majority leader based on what he said a few minutes ago. he said that this debate has been part of civil histrionics. are you accusing doctor ford of partisan histrionics when she came forward? he said the politics of personal destruction is rampant mister leader are you accusing doctor ford of engaging in the politics of personal destruction? he talked about people being intimidated. again, are you accusing doctor ford of intimidating the senate?
because she had the courage to come forward? and then he speaks over and over about the outrageous smear it's about time that he came forward and came clean so really young are referring to what doctor ford said that you cannot say so because everybody knows that rhetoric is outrageous but it's her testimony that has the whole thing going. her testimony is required by one courageous republican who said he would not rush things through. not any democrats but i said yesterdayne the leader said that democrats have delayed but mister leader do we have two
delay? it is true you set the time and place more your committee chairs do and of when we vote with no effect from the democrats or no influence. if you delay it is because you delayed. tbut ultimately doctor forward - - doctor ford came forward and won america's hearts at that point that derailed their headlong rush to put judge kavanaugh on the supreme court. led by judge kavanaugh with his return testimony and president trump and leader mcconnell they tried to misdirect the whole issue away from doctor ford who is the
cause and the reason we are debating all of this and the other bogeyman that happened to be democrats coincidentally. it is wrong. but what they are doing is demeaning to doctor ford. and the meaning is the last thing doctor ford and others who have gone through what she has gone through need now. or deserves now. so i say to the leader if you are talking about partisan histrionics if you are talking about politics of personal destruction, the intimidation and outrageous leaders really you are accusing doctor ford
of all of those things. not anyone else. because she is the reason we are all here in this type of discussion and no democrat senator feinstein tried to respect her wishes to not make it public. that wasn't political instinct but a human instinct as i understand it doctor feinstein staff called each week and said now she said no and because of that now they are accusing her of manipulating it what? to keep it private? doctor ford said she wrestled deciding to go public she knew the damage for her family and her life and for her very life. but she decided she had an obligation to come forward.
i believe her. large number of americans believe her. but even if you don't believe her and choose to believe judge kavanaugh, don't demean doctor ford which is exactly what you are doing. shame. it is a low point in the headlong rush to get somebodies whose views are out of touch with the american people, in all likelihood greatly limit women's health care and women's right to choose and gravely constrain healthcare and allow the president to overreach with no constraint. doctor ford seems to be a casualty along the way in terms of name-calling and the nastiness and the
viciousness. they don't say that to doctor ford but make no mistake about it, it is her we are talking about because only she brought these things up not democrats. these came from the heart. and now for my three final points with the documents released late last night, first we knew this would be a limited process to constrain the fbi from getting the facts having received the federal briefing a few minutes ago our fears have been realized. our fears have been realized it is not a thorough investigation. according to doctor ford's lawyers and mrs. ramirez lawyers many witnesses wishes
- - wish to be interviewed and they were not. why not? and what limits were placed on the fbi? so they could not do a thorough investigation? the word is, it was the white house from some of those republican senate oitaffers here so the white house had two choices. they could admit that or deny that or at the very minimum make the directive that they sent to the fbi public if the white house did limit when it normally does with the background check it sure seems they did given the limited witnesses that were not called and should have been, make it public.
let the american people see. and what else should be made public are these documents. first, the idea that should be thorough and open and available by the pedant - - pettiness there is only one document for members to see. that's very hard to do that's a lot of documents there is only one copy. why were there ten copies? what the heck is going on? but it's just a pattern of limiting access to truth into what the american people want to know. so i reiterate my call particularly after what the
documents contain to make it public obviously there has to be appropriatend reactions, and there should be to protect the privacy of those who were interviewed. but there is no reason on god's green earth they cannot be made public. let the american people decide. saying from the very beginning that he would rush this through and starting with not releasing documents followed by constraints from our senate republican colleagues on what should be on limitations of the fbi and to the new background check with one document in that room. with the white house and the republican side of the senate
regardless of the facts. it is wrong and those that we all want and it hurts with the reputation of the fbi and above all it hurts the supreme court and the american people. and make no mistake about it, the process is open and fair many any long - - maybe any outcome would be different but at least there would be some respect in the process. so with this body to the supreme court and the united states of america. i yield the floor. >> madam president it seems light years ago but it was
