high school and chose to stay there on the north side. he said why would we not want to build up our side of town? why would we take off and leave? josh in his own twitter account has on his twitter account second peter 3:9. the lord is not slow in doing what he has promised, the way people understand slowness, god is being patient with you. he doesn't want anyone to be lost but he wants all people to change their hearts and their lives. a pretty good message, josh. i believe we are still a nation of reconciliation. the first step is not forgetting who we were. >> we leave this senate recording from yesterday. you can see it anytime on c-span.org. the senate back in at noon to work on disaster relief package. now to nancy pelosi's weekly press conference.

>> as we go into memorial day weekend which is such a beautiful time for us to remember, respect and honor the service and sacrifice of our heroes in uniform and reaffirm our sacred duty to never forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice, the service of our veterans reminds us of our mission to build a future of their sacrifice and we do so under the oath we take to support and defend the constitution and protect the american people. the house past nine bills to support veterans protecting their health benefits and taking action to end the crisis of veteran suicide. we are passing urgently needed 6 for military families facing

tax hikes under the gop tax scam. with the kiddie tax republicans took half $1 billion from working in their families and gave it to big corporations and the wealthy. half $1 billion. it is unacceptable that children of our fallen heroes who suffered so much are forced to pay thousands of additional dollars and taxes on the benefit. they can it be forced to sacrifice twice. as democrats protect military families, hard at work to protect workers in stark contrast to republican special-interest agenda. today in the same legislation that contains the tax 6 to fix what entitlements did in their tax scam, passing the secure act, passing strong measures to help workers have a secure retirement.
11:15 am
yesterday the consumer first act, reversing administration destruction of the consumer bureau, the consumer bureau returned $12 billion to 30 million seniors, servicemembers and veterans before being gutted by the trump administration. we hope to have a disastrous supplemental bill passed before leaving for the district court, that was the hope we have been working on in small hours of the night last night. however, we have sent legislation, bipartisan legislation in the house to the senate, would be helpful for those where the senate would have the bill, send it on to the president. in light of other disasters that occurred in the spring, past another bill that expanded the areas that were affected
11:16 am
sitting at the senate and send it to the president. that would send such a beautiful message to areas that are affected. you see what is happening as we gather here. the problem is the trump administration, put in conditions that are totally unacceptable. don't have anything to do with what we are trying to do for disaster assistance and we have not been able to find common ground. we understand our responsibility on the border but what they are doing is not right. it is important to know in ten years before this, not a single child died in custody of border patrol. now 6 children have died in the past several months. six children have died in the last several months.
11:17 am
honoring our oath means honoring our constitutional responsibility to conduct oversight of the president and the trump administration. that response ability has been resoundingly affirmed again and again making absolutely clear that the house has a responsibility to follow the facts and follow the truth for the american people. yesterday deutsche bank concluded, quote, put simply the power of congress to conduct investigations is inherent in the legislative process and in a major case, that would be on monday the judge declared there can be little doubt that congress's interest in the accuracy of the president's financial disclosures falls within the legislative sphere. the president's priority, personal and political interest, not the public interest. yesterday democrats went to the white house prepared to offer the president the opportunity to launch a historic infrastructure initiative. we met three weeks before.
11:18 am
a good positive meeting how we build the infrastructure of our country, roads, bridges, mass transit, and underserved urban areas as well, water systems, wastewater, drinking water, a structure for our satellites their technology works here. for all these things we were optimistic. we were hoping for housing and school construction as a further part of the conversation but the question is how is it paid for. be read interested the night before he sent us a letter to chuck schumer and me saying he didn't want to do infrastructure and so we did the us-mexico canada, that is not the accurate --
11:19 am
them call it nafta, nafta 2.0, that trade agreement. that was a strange juxtaposition but nonetheless next day you know what happened. he says it is because of cover-up and i know that strikes a chord with him. he is afraid of cover-ups. being accused of cover-up. i really think he knew the decision was getting into territory he did not want -- they did not allow the mueller investigation to go into the president's personal finances. a major setback for him and must have known the deutsche bank decision would be consistent but in any event,
11:20 am
his presentation, he pulled a stunt. i truly believe that the president has a bag of tricks in the white house has a bag of tricks that they save for certain occasions. they don't necessarily apply to the occasion but are a distraction which is he is the master of distraction. we will all agree on that. that is something he does well, to distract from problems that he has. he changes the subject. while he tries to say this because i said cover-up, we have been saying cover-up for a wild. i ran across a meeting and it had nothing to do with him. and the facts that house democratic caucus had not passed to impeachment and that is where he wants us to be and when he saw that was not happening, that again with the cover-up which he understands -- it was sad because as i said to some of you yesterday thomas jefferson, one -- our third
11:21 am
president, the first infrastructure initiative, his secretary of the treasury, the secretary of the treasury yesterday after the president left the room. to put together a big infrastructure plan to follow the lewis and clark expedition to build into the infrastructure of america, cumberland road, and it is important to our country in terms of commerce and mobility and 100 years later, teddy roosevelt initiated his infrastructure plan which was establishment of the national park service. later in the century president eisenhower put forth an interstate highway proposal. a leader of the senate, lyndon
11:22 am
johnson, sam rayburn and president of the united states, republican president eisenhower work together to pass that for the good of the country and its purpose, president eisenhower, it would unify america with the defense issue. what we are talking about, infrastructure, the president says i word, i thought he was talking infrastructure, roads, bridges and mass transit. i said some of these things, we would give him the opportunity to make a historic contribution because it is a safety measure. it is about commerce, safety, mobility, product, marketed, clean air, clean water, it is about a better future for our country, trillions of dollars in deficits in terms of low or no maintenance, it has never
11:23 am
been partisan. we don't want it to be partisan now but i can only think he wasn't up to the task of figuring out the difficult choices of how to cover the cost of infrastructure legislation that we had talked about. the president stormed out and pound the table, walk out the door. next time, have the tv cameras in there while i have my say. that didn't work for him either and this time, another temper tantrum. i pray for the president of the united states. i wish his family, his administration come his staff would have an intervention for the good of the country. >> would you be prepared to change your rhetoric given the
11:24 am
politicization? >> i am. >> are you prepared to do something differently? to not provoke him? >> you bought into his excuse. that was not the reason he did that yesterday. it was an excuse for him to do that and with all do respect to your question, i do not intend not to honor my oath of office, nor do my colleagues in the house of representatives to honor our oath of office to protect and defend the constitution which has a system of checks and balances, separation of power in it and the american people understanding what he is doing is an assault on the constitution of the united states. we can walk and chew gum at the same time and he can too.
11:25 am
>> the president may have engaged in impeachable offenses but today you say you're not on a path to impeach. explain why -- >> let me be very clear. the president's behavior in terms of obstruction of justice, things he is doing, very clear it is in plane site. it cannot be denied. he going subpoenas, obstruction of justice. these would be impeachable offenses but i intend -- three things you might understand better if you remember these three things. we want to follow the facts and send the truth to the american people with a recognition that no one is above the law. and that the president is engaged in a cover-up and that is -- while we deal with it, a
11:26 am
decision our caucus makes, our caucus is very much saying whatever we do, we need to be ready when we do it and i do think impeachment is a very divisive place to go in our country. people through our investigation, it may take us to a place that is unavoidable in terms of impeachment or not but we are not at that place. >> another meeting with the president after what happened, you will work with him? >> of course. we are dealing with a situation that is becoming more predictable but i do think we have a responsibility to find common ground. funny you ask that question because yesterday i was going to start the meeting in terms of what i have done here but also worked -- we are very busy people, leaders in congress, especially the president of the
11:27 am
united states and a meeting between leaders of congress and the president, this is not a casual coming together of democrats and republicans. this is a historic meeting. and the first branch of government and president of the united states. let's make it count for something. let's make it count for something by preparation, respect for each other's views, understanding the points to get results. he obviously was not prepared, and used an excuse to go out the door. i will not take response to billy for his irresponsible behavior.
11:28 am
>> kellyanne conway marked the meeting expanded on some -- >> i'm not going to -- as speaker of the house i responded to the president of the united states. of the conversations people want to have among themselves - >> a lot of major legislative issues you need to address, talking about that event, to add the question, to reengineer this to keep the government open. and have to have democratic votes for the president. >> why don't you ask that question of the president of the united states? we have always been responsible. left to our own devices are appropriators can forge that culture, intelligent appropriations and in those days they were not really those arenas. so disaster assistance, left to their own devices, until the
11:29 am
white house intervenes. we will pass of the appropriations bill and we will and hopefully we will do it in a timely fashion. the debt ceiling will have to be lifted and a matter of conversation we are having on the debt ceiling. we are not saying is the president says, if you don't stop investigating the, stop honoring your oath of office. i can't work with you. that is what he is saying. maybe he wants to take a leave of absence. i don't know. on the other hand, we understand our responsibilities. to go forward, it will be up to them to have some level -- >> a better position to ask for borders. >> we will do what we have to do that is right for the american people. one more.
11:30 am
>> the president wants on some level -- >> of course. >> explain the intervention. >> the what? >> you made a comment about intervention. >> i thought you said statutory intervention. that would be good. troublemaker. that is an idea. glad you suggested it or take it up with my colleagues. they haven't been thinking about it but your support will be important to them. the white house is crying out for impeachment. that is why he left yesterday. he was hoping. somehow or other you all have a story that isn't real and want
11:31 am
to believe it is in our caucus. that simply isn't the truth. we respect the diverse city of opinion in our caucus and i say to the caucus our diversity is our strength. we have unity in our culture and so when he saw, he is saying you called the meeting at 9:00. we have meetings, mister president. it is not about you. it is about whatever is current at that time. and so somehow or other you keep perpetuating the story, i don't know why but it isn't factual. nonetheless that is what disappointed him because he didn't see this rush to impeachment coming out of our caucus in our 9:00 meeting which he thought we called specifically for him. and to his family and his cabinet and his staff, this is
11:32 am
not behavior that rises to the dignity of the office of president of the united states. having said that, as i said, i absolutely ardently pray for the president because we need - sometimes when we are talking to him he agrees. i said one time who is in charge here? you agree and all of a sudden something changes. what goes on there? who is in charge? he says he is in charge. i suspect that he may be and i suspect he may be even more since yesterday because i don't think any responsible assistant to the president of the united states would advise him to do what he did yesterday. thank you all. [inaudible questions]
11:33 am
[inaudible conversations] >> house speaker nancy pelosi with her weekly press conference and we help bring you kevin mccarthy's weekly press conference shortly. the senate coming back at noon today, half an hour from now to work on the disaster relief package and vote on reducing robo calls. until then we will show you senator dick durbin talking yesterday on the senate floor about the infrastructure bill. >> we had a meeting in ncy
