Vice President Mike Pence Delivers Remarks in West Virginia CSPAN March 27, 2017 12:05pm-12:36pm EDT
>> vice president mike pence traveled to west virginia this past weekend to meet with small business owners. he said president trump is the best friend american small business will ever have. he did not mention the health care bill that failed in congress the day before. he was joined in west virginia by linda mcmahon, head of the small business administration. >> wow, what a great crowd. thank you so much for coming out on this saturday afternoon. ron and nancy, i can't thank you enough for having us and giving vice president pence, myself, an opportunity first to have listened to some of the concerns that many of the small businesses in the community have. and then to let you know a little bit what we'd like to do about them. i was incredibly flattered and honored when at the time president-elect donald trump asked me to take on this position. he did he knew my background of
small business. i know the ups and downs. i have bankrupt i have had my house auctioned off. my car repo repossessed in the drive way. pregnant with my second child at the time. i get if it. i undertan about the regulatory environment. i understand about taxes and that's what president trump wants to work so hard to make right. i know you-all know so many stats relative to small businesses. let me give you a little one about regulatory environment. for every $10,000 of regulation, 3% to 6% of small businesses go out of business. usually less than 20 employees. now, we have just got to do something. we have to have proper regulatorytory environment. that's what president trump wants to do. proper taxes. proper regular another environment. making sure that we're providing our small businesses with the tools that they need to start, to grow, and to be successful. it's my privilege to be here
today to say hello to so many of you. and to let you know that i am your advocate at small business administration. i've got your back. i want to hear from you because president trump believes in small businesses. he knows that you are the backbone of our economy. he knows how you contribute to your community. and he is so committed to making small businesses essential focus of his term in office. r terms. it's my pleasure today to introduce vice president michael pence who himself -- hold your applause one sec, who himself comes from a small business environment. his parents started with convenience store, gas stations and on the ride over here today i was telling him i heard you say one time, are there any people who still understand what gas station is? look i'm from north carolina, we used to call them filling
stations. and he said, yeah. filling stations. so vice president pence is as committed as the president is to make sure that we are giving you the support that you need. so i want him to be able to tell you-all about that. now applaud loud astrong for our vice president michael pence. cheers and applause] vice president pence: hello, west virginia. it is great to be back. and if only just to say thanks. thanks to your hard work, your
support, and your prayers west virginia voted overwhelmingly to make donald trump the 45th president of the united states. and we will never forget it. [cheers and applause] vice president pence: let me thank our host today ronald reagan foster and nancy reagan foster. i said a few minutes ago they are my second favorite ron and nancys i ever met. i want to thank all the team and employees who came out today. you have been building this state and the american dream ince 1981. i just heard you have a wall division here at fosters. maybe we need to talk.
what you do and what you have done here since 1981 makes this country great. the president and i are truly grateful for you and for all the good 2350e78 people. part of the foster supply team and all the neighbors and friends who have gathered here today to stand with us. give yourselves a round of applause for coming out on a saturday afternoon. [applause] quongsman jenkins and congressman alex mooby. thank you for your service to this contry. great to be in your district. vp pence: it is so humbling to stand before you in this role. i am just a small-town guy from southern indiana. my grandfather immigrated to this country. to think i have the privilege to raise my right hand on january 20 and accept the oath of office to serve as the 48th vice president of the united states is the greatest privilege of my life.
on behalf of my whole family, thank you, west virginia, for giving us the opportunity. giving us the opportunity. vp pence: i will tell you, it [applause] is the greatest privilege of my life to be vice president to president donald trump. he is my friend. he loves his family, he loves this country with boundless energy, optimism, courage and determination. let me be clear -- president donald trump is going to be the best friend american small business will ever have. [applause] vice president pence: that's why he picked linda mcmahon to lead the small business administration. isn't she amazing? [applause] vice president pence: linda mcmahon knows an awful lot about small businessbusiness.
they started their company as a small business back in the 1970's as titan sports. then they built it into an international entertainment enterprise -- the wwe. [applause] vp pence: any fans in the house? am one. now she's bringing that great business experience to help small businesses across america grow and thrive. linda, we are grateful for your leadership. maybe we could have used a few of your wwe superstars on capitol hill yesterday. [applause] give her another round of applause for leading the small business administration. with such great, great quality. [applause] with linda mcmahon at the s.b.a., we're listening to small business owners. that has not been happening for a while in washington, d.c. we're been listening like -- join me in thanking all the great small business owners who
are gathered here today here in people that make west virginia such a great place to live to work and to raise a family. [applause] vp pence: thank you all. we just had a great conversation. we talked with the job creators in west virginia about the president's pro-business agenda. less regulations, lower taxes, fair trade, better infrastructure and a renewed focus on american energy. i have heard again from these west virginia small business owners about the need to repeal and replace obamacare. [applause] vp pence: they told me how obamacare stands in the way and stifles growth. it is a burden not just a job creators, but to the american people. i was not surprised to hear it, because every promise of obamacare has been broken. you remember what they were. seven years ago, after it was
signed into law, they said you could keep your doctor. not true. they said if you like your health plan you can keep it. not true. we were all told the cost of health insurance would go down. that was not true either. west virginia knows this better than most. it's heartbreaking to say it. last year alone, obamacare premiums spiked by a stunning 32%. over 40% of the state does not have any choice of insurance provider on the exchange. west virginians and president trump know the truth about this failed law, that every day obamacare survives is another day that america suffers. that is why the president worked tirelessly over the past several weeks to get congress to repeal and replace obamacare. you saw his resolve to work with whoever he needed to work with to get our plan across the finish line on capitol hill. i was inspired by president
trump's determination and commitment to keep his promise to the american people. [applause] vp pence: and the president andand the president and i are grateful for speaker paul ryan and all the house republicans who stood with us. in this effort to end obamacare. but as we all learned yesterday, congress just wasn't ready. you saw it. with 100% of house democrats -- every single one and a handful of republicans actually standing in the way of president trump's plan to repeal and replace obamacare, we are back to the drawing board. nancy pelosi actually said yesterday was a victory for the american people. for west virginia, they know better. yesterday was not a victory for the american people, it was a victory for the squaytuss quo in washington, d.c., and a victory for the disaster of obamacare.
i promise you that victory will not last very long. [applause] vp pence: the american people want obamacare gone. the president said don't worry, he just tweeted this morning. obamacare will continue to explode and when republicans and democrats finally decide to come together and repeal and replace obamacare, we will be ready to get the job done. [applause] vp pence: as the president promised us this morning, we will all get together and piece together a great health care plan for the people. we will end the obamacare nightmare and give the american people the world-class health care that they deserve. [applause] vp pence: until then, i can
promise you president trump is never going to stop fighting to keep his promises to the american people, and we will make america great again. [applause] vp pence: and we are moving forward. next up we're going to get back to the president's three-part agenda -- jobs, jobs, and jobs for every american in west virginia and across this country. [applause] vp pence: and the great news is we have been on that agenda from the very day he was elected. it has been amazing to see jobs coming back to this country even since the day after this election. the economy added 235,000 jobs. construction and manufacturing are blooming again. -- are booming again. companies are canceling plans to move jobs in factories overseas and are building them right here in america once again. [applause] vp pence: businesses and consumers have not been this confident in years.
by some measures for more than a decade. the era of slow growth is ver. in a new era of american growth and jobs has already begun. [applause] vp pence: it is all because the american people know president donald trump is a man of his word and is a man of action. on day one, president trump went straight to work rolling back reams of red tape that have been killing jobs and -- in small business america across this country. he instructed every bureaucracy in washington d.c. to find two regulations to get rid of before any new regulations out of our nation's capital. vp pence: he has already taken decisive action to protect american jobs and american workers. we will not stop until we end illegal immigration once and for all. [applause]
vp pence: just this week the president authorized the keystone pipeline, creating tens of thousands of jobs and protecting our energy future. [applause] vp pence: folks, we're just getting started. next up, we are going to roller -- we're going to roll our sleeves up and cut tax ass cross the board for working families, small businesses shall and family farms. [applause] vp pence: working with this congress, president trump is going to pass the largest tax cut since the days of ronald reagan. we're going to get this american economy moving again. [applause] vp pence: we are going to reform the tax code and make it flatter and simpler and fair. there isn't anyone here who can make sense of the tax code. -- there isn't anyone here, including the fosters, who can make sense of the tax code.
the tax code in this country is 10 times the size of the bible ith none of the good news. [applause] vp pence: truth is, our taxes make it far too difficult for job creators and hard-working people all across this country to get ahead and achieve the american dream. that is why our tax plan will make american businesses and opportunities more competitive all over this country. we are going to cut the corporate tax rate in america. we have one of the highest business taxes in america. we are going to cut it to 15% so american companies will invest in american operations to create american jobs. [applause] vp pence: we are going to cut taxes for every american and we're going to cut taxes for free enterprise. we are going to get this economy moving with less regulation and more american energy. i'm going to make you a
promise. right after we dropped our right hands on january 20, it was official -- the war on coal is over. [applause] vp pence: and a new era of american energy has begun. [applause] vp pence: for far too long, politicians and bureaucrats in washington, d.c., have crippled our nation's economy and crippled west virginia's economy without regard for the impact it has on people's utilities bills, the impact it has on jobs of hard-working americans. right here they pushed mining companies to the breaking point and jeopardize thousands of good paying jobs and cut off a brighter future for west virginia and families.
it is heartbreaking to think west virginia has lost a third of its mining jobs over the last few years alone or over 130 mines have been shut down since 2009. that is not right. hard-working men and women of this state have been forgotten for too long and they will be forgotten no more under president donald trump. [applause] vp pence: from the first day of his administration, he has been fighting for west virginia and for american energy. we are working with leaders in congress and the new director over at the epa, scott pruitt, to slash through red tape to make sure unidentify lected bureaucrats can't kill your jobs -- un-elected bureaucrats can't kill your jobs and cripple your economy from the comfort of their taxpayer-funded metal desks in
washington, d.c. [applause] vp pence: we are going to bring back jobs, we're going to get washington out of the way of energy producers and coal miners, because energy means growth for america and president trump digs coal. [applause] vp pence: our country is going to be stronger, and west virginia will be stronger and more prosperous because of the president's leadership. when you get right down to it, president trump is going to create jobs and opportunity and prosperity in this country like never before. making america great again is not just about our economy. it also means protecting our nation and defending our way of life. let me tell you, i am with him every day. president trump has no higher priority than the safety and security of the american people. that will always be true. [applause]
vp pence: that is why from the first day of his administration, president donald trump has been standing with the men and women in law enforcement all across america, and we always will. [applause] vp pence: we will work with the congress to make sure those who protect our families in our communities have the resources and training they need to do their jobs and to come home safe to their families. there is a fair number of law enforcement personnel with us today. i know most of you are standing. would all of you take a minute to show the men and women in law enforcement here in west virginia just how much we all truly appreciate the job that they do protecting our amilies. [applause] vp pence: president trump is
putting our security first and our safety first. that is why he is strengthening our borders. this president is going to build a wall, enforce our laws, and as he told the congress, we are acting right now to take gang members, drug dealers and criminals that threaten communities and prey on our citizens off the streets of west virginia and off the streets of america. [applause] vp pence: as the father of the united states marine, let me say this for my heart -- [applause] vp pence: i could not be more proud and grateful to say that we have a president will -- we have a president who will rebuild our military, restore the arsenal of democratcy, give our soldiers, sailors, airmen,
marines, and coast guard the resources and training they need to accomplish their mission and come home safe at ast. [applause] vp pence: it is about jobs, it is about energy, about our national defense. president trump is also keeping one more promise that i want to mention. that is the promise he made to nominate to the supreme court someone who will be faithful to our constitution. by nominating judge neil gorsuch, president trump has kept his word to appoint a justice of the supreme court who will keep faith with the constitution and who will uphold the god-given liberties that are enshrined there. [applause] vp pence: you saw it this week.
my daughter was off work, she got to watch c-span. she told me she watched a lot of judge gorsuch's testimony. three days of powerful testimony before the senate. judge gorsuch made it clear why president trump nominated him to the highest court in the land. he demonstrated temperament and intellect. explains why the bipartisan praise is rolling in. truth is, americans saw this week what president trump saw when he made that decision. judge neil gorsuch is one of the most respected, qualified and mainstream nominees to the supreme court in american history. [applause] vp pence: but remarkably, this week senator chuck schumer and the obstructionists in his party in the senate actually announced the democrats plan to filibuster judge gorsuch's nomination to be an associate
justice. that is something that has never been done successfully in american history. let me say this to you, west virginia. if we can get the help of senator joe manchin and with the help of senator shelley moore capito, judge neil gorsuch will soon become justice neil gorsuch in america and the rule of law will be better for it. [applause] vp pence: let me be clear -- president trump and i are confident the united states senate will confirm judge neil gorsuch one way or the other. [applause] vp pence: it is great to be in west virginia. cheers and applause]
vp pence: my friends, we have come to a pivotal moment in our nation's history. in this moment, we need every freedom loving american to stand up, speak out. take time as you have done today to come and be engaged and be involved. we need you to keep telling your neighbors here in west virginia that we can do better. we are renewing and restoring this country and we can put america back on a path of greater future. this i know we will do. have faith. over the mantle of our home since my first run for office back in the year 2000, there has been a framed copy of a verse from the good book. it was in our home in indiana, it was in the governor's residence in indiana when i served there.
now it hangs above the mantle in the home of the vice president of the united states. it simply reads these words -- "for i know the plans i have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." in november, the people of west virginia voted to give america a president. a president with the strength and the courage and the vision to make america great again. you voted to give us a new leader who would make america prosperous again, and i believe with all my heart that with your continued support and faith, and with god's help, together we will restore this country. our best days are ahead, and together, we will make america great again.
[cheers and applause] vp pence: thank you west virginia. on bless you and god bless the united states of america.
