tv President Trump Maybe Warning to North Korea Not Tough Enough CSPAN August 10, 2017 6:57pm-7:05pm EDT
finding what he wanted that week. coming in now, i get to do my job. >> watch our interview with marosaow semantical -- o manigault. trump held a national security meeting this afternoon in bedminster, a new jersey golf course where he is vacationing. at the meeting, he talked to reporters about north korea and gave his thoughts on whether mitch mcconnell should resign if exchange. -- here is the exchange. it runs about eight minutes.
president trump: hello, everybody. i know you will be watching a couple of them. we have a lot of people here today. a lot of subjects under discussion, including venezuela. including north korea and other things that i think we are making tremendous headway. we will be spending quite a bit of time here and during the weekend we go into manhattan where i have a lot of meetings scheduled in manhattan. any questions? >> the north koreans said yesterday what you said was nonsense. any response? president trump: i don't think they mean that. i think it is the first time
they heard it like they heard it. frankly, the people that were questioning that statement that it was to talk, maybe it was not too tough enough. they have been doing it to our country for many years and it is about time somebody stuck up for the people of this country and for the people of other countries. if anything, that statement was not tough enough. we backed 100% buyer military, everybody. we are backed by many other leaders. i noticed many senators and others today came out in favor of what i said. that statement may not be tough enough. >> what can be tougher than fire and fury? president trump: you will see. >> [indiscernible] president trump: we don't talk about that, we never do. i'm not the other administration that says we are going into mosul in four months. i will tell you what they have been doing and what they have been getting away with is a tragedy. it cannot be allowed. >> [indiscernible] president trump: we will always that says we are going into consider negotiations, but they have been negotiating now for 25 years. look at clinton. he folded on the negotiations. he was weak and ineffective. look at what happened with bush, obama. obama didn't want to talk about it. i talked. somebody has to do it. somebody has to do it. >> can you talk about your relationship with senator mcconnell? president trump: we want to get
repeal and replace done. i have been hearing that for seven years, but i've been only doing this for two years. i am really only been doing this for six months. it is almost two years and all i hear is repeal and replace. i get there and i say where is the bill, i want to sign it? they don't have it. they passed repeal and replace but they never had a president or senate that was going to do it. i said very simply, where is repeal and replace? now we want tax reforms and tax cuts. we will reduce taxes for the people. we pay more taxes than anybody in the world and we will reduce taxes. tax cuts, tax reforms. i want a very big infrastructure bill. we are working on that very hard already and we can do that. we might even get bipartisan on infrastructure but we don't have it. i said mitch, get to work and let's get it done.
they should have had this last one done. they lost by one vote. for a think like that to happen is a disgrace and it should not have happened. >> some conservative analysts say it is time for him to retire. president trump: if he does not get repeal and replace done, if he does not get taxes done, meaning cuts and reform, and if he doesn't get a very easy one, infrastructure, you can ask me that question. >> is that a yes or no? president trump: that means ask me that question. the opioid crisis is an emergency and i am saying officially right now it is an emergency. it is a national emergency. we will spend a lot of time, effort and a lot of money on the
opioid crisis. we are going to make it a national emergency. it is a serious problems, the likes of which we have never had. when i was growing up, they had the lsd and different drugs. there has not been anything like what has happened to this country in the last four or five years. this is a worldwide problem, not just the united states problem. this is happening worldwide. this is a national emergency and we are drawing documents now. >> are there mixed messages coming out of the administration? secretary mattis seems to be advocating -- president trump: there are no mixed messages. to be honest, general mattis may have taken it a step beyond what i said. there were no mixed messages. rex was just stating the views. here is the view.
i said it yesterday, i don't have to say it again -- i will tell you this, it may be tougher than i said it, not less. one more? >> any assurance for the american people about the situation with north korea? the threats towards guam. should they be comfortable? president trump: the people of this country should be very comfortable. if north korea does anything in terms of even thinking about attack of anybody that we love or represent or our allies or us, they can be very nervous. i will tell you why -- and they should be -- because things will happen to them like they never thought possible, ok? he's been pushing the world around for a long time and i have great respect for what china and what russia did. we have a 15-0 vote. i have great respect for china
and russia on what they did with sanctions. i believe that will have an effect. i don't think it will have the kind of effect -- even though we were the ones that got it -- nikki haley did a great job. we all did a great job. i have great respect for what they did. i have great respect for the 15-0, but probably it will not be as effective as a lot of people think it can be unfortunately. i can china can do a lot more. i think china will do a lot more. look -- we have trade with china. we lose hundreds of billions of dollars a year on trade with china. they know how i feel. it's not going to continue like that, but it china helps us, i feel a lot differently towards trade. a lot differently towards trade. the people of our country are safe, our allies are safe.
