southern baptist convention at the white house to discuss ongoing recovery and relief efforts at the texas gulf coast following the hurricane. the president and the first lady will visit on saturday in texas to be a relief efforts there. this is almost 15 minutes. >> thank you very much. the first lady and i are pleased to welcome kill mcgovern of the american red cross, divot hudson of the salvation army and kevin easel of the southern baptist disaster relief fund. these people have been absolutely incredible when what they have done and would like to thank them and their staff for their incredible work that they are doing, and helping people affected by the hurricane harvey. it sounds a good very innocent name but it is not an innocent hurricane, that i can tell you. it is at epic proportions. these organizations and many other nonprofits involved represent the generosity,

determination and unbreakable spirit of the american people. mike pence was there yesterday representing the country so well, in the love and care, and i had so many great comments about the visits, i appreciate it. when a disaster strikes, a help to help others in a time of need, which is over the last weeks, believe me. they have already provided tens of thousands of displaced residents with meals, shelter, water, fresh blankets, and clothing. when one american suffers, and i say this quite a bit, especially lately, when you see what is going on, we all suffer. when one american family is brought together in times of tragedy, by the unbreakable bronze of loyalty and love that we have for one another, we are. that family there is a great love and loyalty in this country and maybe more so than ever before over the last few days.

nowhere is our unity more evident than in the actions of our volunteer and charitable organizations that rallied to their neighbors aid when disaster strikes. the people of texas and louisiana were hit very hard by a historic flood. in their response, they have taught us a lesson, a very powerful lesson. there was no outbreak of crime, there was an out wake of compassion only, real, beautiful, strong compassion. they have really inspired us as a nation, to be honest they have inspired the world, because the world is watching. we are pleased to receive an update from gail david under the world other red cross, the salvation army and the southern baptist disaster relief. the federal government is on the ground bringing significant resources to bear, and i want to assure these organizations and all involved that we will continue to coordinate with them

and bring all of the relief and comfort and everything else that we absolutely can to the gulf coast. i would also like to thank the governor, lieutenant governor of texas, they have been outstanding. of coordination at the level relationship, it has been pretty much unprecedented thomas i would like to thank them. and would like to thank all of the folks working on the ground, for the administration, tom is here, thank you very much, we appreciated. every american's heart is with the people of texas. and iave really overcome, can say they have overcome this horrible devastation. work,t is going back to and the coast guard, in particular, we have to thank them. they saved thousands of lives, we were just talking about it. save the people in

the worst of times, saving a lot of people out there. we will help them all recover from this tragedy together, renewing our hope in community and rebuild those homes and businesses and schools and places of worship. with a strength and vigor that comes from within ourselves. i authorized a proclamation for prayer, and we will have it on sunday, and mike, that was something that was national. i think that it will be something to see and witness. it has been a long time. , our country deserves that greatly. i would like to thank my wife, melania, she has been so involved in this and helping so much, i would like to thank her mother would you like to say a few words? , withis great to be here their amazing people, and elected thank all of the people

here, people across the country who came to help in texas. job that youstic have done, and tomorrow we will go and visit them. i just want to tell them to be strong and everything will be ok. trump: i did not tell her i was going to do that, but she did a great job. [laughter] she really has, she has been so dedicated to this, this is our much affecting her, what is happening in texas. and neighboring states, frankly. so, i want to thank you, first lady. >> thank you. >> the salvation army? >> we are very appreciative of this opportunity and of our partners in service. we are working hand-in-hand with groups like the red cross to provide shelter for people, and were able to provide meals. even though we are limited in being able to get in to a lot of

the impacted areas, we have already served hundreds of thousands of meals and literally millions of meals will be served. we can only do this as we partner together. , this is my coworkers a time where all texans, no matter where you're are from, are all about serving americans in need. i would like to thank you mr. president, the red cross and the baptists, and all other agencies working with us. together we can make a difference. trump: thank you very much. southern baptist? >> we are three different organizations but we work best as one. we really do lock arms and have the capacity to serve over 400,000 people per day. mr. president, thank you for fema, they have been incredible. we have come through many disasters and they have done a fantastic job. they have been prepared, and allowing us to volunteer. trump: i think we should thank

brock long and all of the people at fema and at homeland, general kelly as well who has been very much involved. he is now in the white house, but his spirit and everything else, he has been involved in the last few weeks getting ready. really, this has been, probably now almost two weeks when when you it would probably hit the area, but general kelly has done a fantastic job. alain duke has also been terrific. i think all of our folks. red cross? >> first of all, our hearts go out to the people of texas. on behalf of the entire american red cross, so many people have lost everything and presented in our shelters with just the clothes on their back. i visited one of the shelters outside of austin and it housed about 200,000 people, and i had

the opportunity to talk to families. six month old babies to six foot eight man, everyone in between. we have heard stories of heartbreak, and hearted, but the one thing i have seen in the nine years that i have been with the american red cross, is the incredible resiliency of the american people. toy are round and determined build back, and there are about 40,000 people in our shelters right now, across the state of texas. our volunteers are pulling in, giving them comfort, hope, we served about 390,000 meals and next. the incredible thing -- 390,000 meals and snacks. volunteers are getting hot meals into our hands so that we can serve them. the government has been phenomenal, and we had a hard time getting volunteers in, when we did that the city gave us

dump trucks so that we could get volunteers. the department of defense give us high water vehicles, 20 of them so that we could bring needed supplies in. so i am so appreciative of the teamwork, appreciative of your support and again, our hearts go out to the people of texas. trump: thank you very much. 390,000, that is up until now? >> as of last night? >> mike would you like to say something? >> the president has just returned from southeast texas yesterday, -- mr. president, i just returned yesterday and we heard stories of resilience, we heard their gratitude to you and the first lady, for the administration's support and compassion. admiration for our first responders, local leadership as well. but i also heard mr. president, about their gratitude for volunteer organizations that

have really been there from the very outset of the storm, and i want to thank you and the first lady for taking the opportunity to call attention to the salvation army and the red cross and the southern baptist disaster relief. thate looking should know while the federal government will be there, at your direction, we will be seeking resources from the congress to make sure disaster relief is available for individuals and businesses. the work of meeting people's human needs each and every day will take all of us, and these volunteer organizations need resources. i would just add mr. president that anyone looking on can go to come our website, where all of these organizations are listed. people can find out how they can be supportive of volunteer organizations and for the weeks and months ahead, they will be
