President Trump Meets with NATO Secretary General in Oval Office  CSPAN  April 3, 2019 1:45am-2:07am EDT

1:45 am
asked about the economic impact of closing the border. the president and secretary general were joined by cabinet .embers president trump: it is a great honor to have you here with us. we have developed a great relationship and i am happy to say the secretary-general will be with us for quite a long time , so congratulations on that. i feel very strongly about that. togetherorked strongly . it was not so good and now it is catching up. we have seven of the 28
1:46 am
countries that are current and the rest are trying to catch up, and they will catch up. 2% gdplooking at the level, and at some point, it will have to go higher than that, but seven out of 28, the u.s. pays for a good share of nato. the relationship with nato has thinkery good i tremendous progress has been made. buthowed me this yourself, if you look at the charts and different things, you go back 10 or 15 years and it is a roller coaster down. over 140icked up billion dollars of additional money and it looks like we will have another hundred billion more in spending.
1:47 am
that is exclusive of the u.s. we will have another $100 billion more into 2020. tremendous progress has been made and nato is much stronger because of that progress. it is great honor to have you with us at the white house. >> take you so much, mr. president and thank you for .osting me and my delegation thank you for your commitment to our alliance, and especially for becauseong leadership as you just mentioned, our nato itiance once to invest more
1:48 am
helps and it proves that nato is a strong alliance. up in our fight against terrorism and we are investing more. north america, the u.s. is doing more than they have done in many years, and that shows the strength of this alliance. we are celebrating the 70th anniversary of nato. i look forward to our meeting and thank you for your support. president trump: it has been an honor and we are proud of what has happened in respect to nato, the media does not understand what took place, but a tremendous amount of additional money was invested by other nation, which was a fair thing from our standpoint.
1:49 am
a lot more money will be invested, but we have been picking up a tremendous, disproportionate share and we have to have fairness for our taxpayers as well. thank you all very much. >> is it your intention to close the border this weekend? what would it take to not close the border? president trump: i am ready to close it, if i need to close it. mexico has started to apprehend people on their border. they are really apprehending thousands of people, and it is the first time in decades -- it should have taken place a long time ago. mexico has the strongest immigration laws. you cannot get any stronger than
1:50 am
what mexico has. our system is absolutely maxed out and border patrol has done an incredible job, but the system is absolutely maxed out and it is a very unfair thing, so mexico, as of yesterday, it made a big difference. up people, if any are coming they have -- coming up. quickly and to meet make a deal. i can do it in 45 minute. we need to get rid of chain migration, catch and release, visa lottery and asylum. -- she will not believe this, mr. secretary-general. you catch somebody coming illegally into the country and they bring them to a court.
1:51 am
we cannot because you can never have that many judges. they take their name and information and they release them. we keep them. it is called catch and keep. if they touch your land, one foot on your land, you now have a big trial, so what they do is release them into the u.s. and say, come back in four years for a trial. .% or 2% come back worst, dumbest immigration system in the world and the democrats could change it with one meeting. they do not want to change it because they do not want to give the republicans a victory because they want open borders, which means crime and other
1:52 am
things coming in, including drugs, so we will see what -- ins because i think spoke to a couple of them and they are changing because they are seeing that it really is a , so let's see if they can do it. beenears, this should have done, but mexico is stopping mexico.oming in to make a dealo not with congress, the border will be closed, 100%, and this should have been done by other presidents, but if we do not make a deal with congress, or if mexico, and probably -- if mexico does not do what they should be doing, they should not
1:53 am
have people coming into their country, and we will close the -- thatthat will be at will be it. i will say this, many people want me to do it because we are being abused by a bad legal system put in by democrats and be it can be changed in 45 minutes, if they want to change it, let's see what they do. about the worried u.s. economy, if you close the border? president trump: of course it will. partnervery big trading , but to me, trading is very important and the border is important, but security is what is most important to me that is
1:54 am
what this gentleman to my right is all about and we will have security in this country. that is more important than trade let me give you a secret. security is more important to me than trade. we will have a strong border, but a closed border. of dollarsp millions of drugs from coming in because a tremendous amount of drug come into the southern border. we will see what happens over the next few days. it looks like mexico is doing enough to keep you from closing the border. president trump: they are apprehending people. there are a lot of people. the fact that they are doing that means that more people will come. we will pay hundreds of millions
1:55 am
combination, and what did they do? they do not do anything for us. that money does not get there, so we are giving hundreds of millions of dollars to the free money is notd going where it is supposed to. be going they are taking advantage of the -- supposed to be going. they are taking advantage of the united states. the payments are supposed to help so that they do not have this problem, but the money is gone and not spent properly. the thing that bothers me is that they arrange these caravans. they put people in there that you do not want to have in the u.s. and we will not have them in the u.s. it is very simple.
1:56 am
he has been a terrific leader and i can say it in my time. we get along really well and he is -- his first statement, i got other 27.t up the billion is a lot of money. he said, what a great job he did. the media never gives me credit, but he gave me credit. by 2020. he has done an excellent job. , an it came time to renew lot of people wanted that job, it's a great job. it really is. a lot of people wanted it. i had no doubt in my mind who i wanted.
1:57 am
>> [inaudible] payingrump: people are and i'm very happy with the fact that they are paying. >> [inaudible] pres. trump: i hope that it's not going to be a security threat. i hope we have a good relationship with russia, china and everybody else. the fact that we have nato and nato was a lot stronger since i've been president. would you say that is correct? correct? we are investing more. >> and we need to maintain incredible defense for all major country. >> i think we will get along with russia. i do believe that. >> on healthcare wire yo? >> i think the republican party will become the party of
1:58 am
healthcare, the democrats are planing a disaster and everyone knows it. you will lose 180 million people under private insurance and i think really and very important if obamacare is such a catastrophe because it is far too expensive and the people can't afford it. and of course the premiums are very hi, seven to $8000 on average. so you have to spend over $8000 before you even hit so obamaca obamacare, if we get back the house in the assumption we keep the senate and the presidency which are two good assumptions we will have a phenomenal healthcare. [inaudible] >> we don't have the house so even the healthcare is good and really good it is much better than when the plane comes out and join you at the appropriate time it's much better than obamacare so when the plane comes out you will see in it is
1:59 am
possible that democrats wouldn't want to do it. it's much better for the people but i'm assuming they will because the democrats never do anything that necessarily is going to be anything other than political. what happens is we go to the election and we have a good chance i keep in the senate and i think we will keep the senate and i think we will keep the presidency and vote and the best healthcare package we have ever had. [inaudible] >> i think many things have been accomplished but i think they also really stand for a signal of truth and strength. and we have a great leader. [inaudible] >> auto club germany, germany is not paying their fair share in great respect for them in the country and my father is german. and born in a wonderful place in
2:00 am
germany so i have a great feeling for germany but they are not paying what they should be paying they are paying close to 1% and is supposed to be paying 2%. the united states over the years got to a point where they would pay 4.3% which is very unfair. in the u.s. cdp, it's 4.3 of a much larger gdp so we are paying for a big portion of nato which basically is protecting europe. so we are protecting europe at the same time they've taken advantage of us on trade. so we have the best of all worlds. we are protecting countries that are taking advantage of the united states of trade. but it is all changing and will take a little while. >> there's going to be a vote in the house tomorrow whether or not to authorize unredacted version of the mueller report and all of the backer materials.
2:01 am
if they do go out the authority for subpoenas will the white house fight? >> i think it's ridiculous because we went there two years of the mueller investigation and we have cash not only that he read the wording it was proven who could go to that and get wording where there was no collusion and no nothing and so there's no collusion, the attorney general and the deputy attorney general world no obstruction and they said no obstruction and so there is no collusion, no obstruction and now will start the process all over again. it's a disgrace. these are just democrats that want to try and demean the country. it should not be allowed. i will live by what the attorney general -- i have a lot of respect for him. and i will avoid what he said but nothing you give them weather and shifty shift or jerry he is been fighting half
2:02 am
of my life in manhattan. i was very successful thank you. but he is been fighting me for years and years in manhattan. not successfully. i will tell you anything we give them will never be enough. we could give them -- it's a 400 page report, we could give them a hundred pages and it would not be enough. they will always come back and say is not enough. this thing has gone on for two years and really started long before that. it practically started from the time i came down the escalator because this was the whole plot whether you want to use the insurance policy as a timeframe, this was in the insurance policy just in case she, hillary clinton loses which she lost and lost big. this is been going on for years. now they want to keep going on,
2:03 am
they spent over $30 million on investigation and they found no collusion which by the way was the most ridiculous premise i ever heard. you understand exactly what i mean. no collusion, there never was. after $30 million we will start the process again because jerry nadler was the started or because shift was to started. all rely on the attorney general to make decisions but i will tell you anything that is given to them will never be good enough and you can give them the more documents that they've ever seen and it would never be good enough. so i think it's a waste of time. it's politics at a low level. >> what about in 1998? >> it's nice that you bring that up. jerry nadler was on the opposite side of this and he thought it was a disgusting terrible thing to even think about giving the report but now we should give the mueller report. in the mueller report is much tighter because the other report went to congress and the mueller report goes to the attorney general. there's a big difference.
2:04 am
they made that because the starr report got out of control fruit respect to going to congress. because a lot of people had it that should not have had it. and did bad things with it. so now they limited to the attorney general and they did that specifically for the reason. and they thought given the concept of the starr report was absolutely something that you can never do. but when it comes to the mueller report which is different on our site, that would be something that he should get. it's hypocrisy in a disgrace. i will say this, there was no collusion, no obstruction, they were very disappointed, i don't know what they were thinking, i guarantee they go into a room between nadler in the group and they laugh like hell at how they have kept this thing on for two years. had they laugh like hell. and i hope that this investigation now which is
2:05 am
finished and no collusion and no obstruction, i hope they now go and take a look at the oranges of the oranges of the investigation. the beginnings of that investigation. you look at the orange and orig. where does it go, how high up in the white house to go, you will all be full of surprises. you should've looked at it a long time ago and that the only thing that is disappointing to me about the mueller report. the mueller report i wish covered the origins, how it started, the beginnings of the investigation. how it started. it did not cover that and for some reason none of that was discussed. if you look at the ig report for
2:06 am
series. women other ig report coming up hopefully very soon, and i think you will learn a lot and you should look at the beginnings and were started in the whole situation because this is been a very, very bad thing for our country and the question was asked before about russia, germany, all the different things that you and i discussed so often and there's been a bad thing for the united states. it's been a total waste of time and what has been a waste of time is a very bad people started something that should've never been started and i hope that is going to continue forward. people did things that were very, very bad for our country and very, very illegal and you can even say treasonous. thank you very much everybody.
