5:50 pm
hwartz about 11 career. announcer: president trump met in the oval office with pakistani prime minister imran khan to discuss u.s.-pakistan relations. the president and the prime minister answer questions from reporter . pres. trump: thank you very much. is great to have the popular prime minister of pakistan. we have many things to discuss. i think we will spend a lot of time talking about trade, because we do very little trade with pakistan compared to what we could be doing and should be doing when our countries get along perfectly. i think we are having that start. we are going to have that start. this tremendous upside with respect to trade, one of the things we are going to be discuss in -- discussing, too, is hostages. , how youalk about that
5:51 pm
feeling is on that -- how you're feeling is on that. we want to talk about the possible polio vaccine. i think we have great meetings. we will be spending a lot of time together. we have a representatives meeting after we're finished. economicame out with -- tremendous economic numbers for the united states. we havethe best economy ever had and we can shift some of that to pakistan. i look forward to it. it is an honor to have you with us. well, inister khan: have been looking forward to this meeting since i assumed office as prime minister of pakistan. states is vital for pakistan. we have links which have gone back since pakistan became independent.
5:52 pm
we have been fighting wars together. pakistan, invasion of pakistan was a frontline state along with the u.s. after 9/11. i look forward to my conversation. reporter: [indistinct] what kind of plan? prime minister khan: that is a big question.
5:53 pm
-- pres. trump: i will say that we have a good relationship with india. we will be talking about india. a very big part of our conversation today. i think that is something that can be worked on together and we will also be talking about afghanistan. of troops upumber by quite a bit. getting an agreement signed, as you know, we will see what happens. we will be talking about india and afghanistan, very much so. the relationship with north korea. if you could brief us on that? pres. trump: i know all about , we're working on it. where companies getting strong enough department. we are going to have 5g, the
5:54 pm
best veggie in the world. silicon valley. -- the best 5g in the world. the result but he that can compete with silicon valley, the brainpower, with what we do. nobody was focused on 5g, but now they are. we have great companies going into 5g, even if they don't want to. a lot of them were happy with what they were doing, but a lot of them are now going into 5g. reporter: [indistinct] pres. trump: our relationship with north korea has been very good. we have really established a good relationship with kim jong-un. there is a rocket testing, no missile testing. we are getting our remains back, we got our hostages back. we have a very good relationship, the two of us. there has been no nuclear testing. what they are doing with 5g will be, we will have to see.
5:55 pm
i will find out. reporter: [indistinct] pres. trump: i think we will have a great meeting today. it is an important meeting. i consider this an important meeting, because we have not met the potential of either country. i think the potential with pakistan and likewise, the opposite way, we have not even come close to meeting it. there is tremendous potential between our country and pakistan. i think pakistan will help us out. -- if wee wanted
5:56 pm
wanted to win that were, -- that war, i could win that war in a week. i just don't want to kill 10 million people. it would be literally over in 10 days. i don't want to do that. i don't want to go that route. working with pakistan and others, we are working to extricate ourselves. nor do we want to be policeman. because basically we are policeman right now. we have been there for 19 years and afghanistan. it is ridiculous. -- in afghanistan. it is ridiculous. we don't want to say has policemen. i have a plan that would win that war in a very short period of time. to buildeen fighting gas stations, rebuilding schools, that is for them to do, the u.s. shouldn't be doing that. what our leadership got his into his ridiculous.
5:57 pm
i think we will have some very good answers on afghanistan very quickly. reporter: [indistinct] pres. trump: you go ahead. reporter: [indistinct] are you going to restore any package for a afghanistan -- for afghanistan? paying $3.2 we are billion for afghanistan is a. -- as a. the problem is -- as aid. the problem is afghanistan was not doing anything for us.
5:58 pm
i ended that about a year and a half ago. the $1.3 billion. i think we have a better relationship with pakistan right now than we did when we were paying that money. but all of that can come back depending on what we work out. where working out things that are very important. i consider this very important. things thatering are very very important, and at the end of a very short time, we will have a great relationship with pakistan. and we should. it is a great country. i have many friends from pakistan. living in new york, i have a lot of pakistani friends. i will tell you that. they are great people, smart, tough, they are tough, no question about that. reporter: [indistinct] pres. trump: i am not going to be watching. probably i will see a little bit of it. i am not going to be watching mueller. you can't take all those bites out of the apple.
5:59 pm
we had no collusion, no obstruction. we had no nothing. we had a total no collusion finding. the democrats were devastated by it. they went crazy. they got off the deep end. they are not doing anything, they are not doing health care, they are not doing infrastructure, not lowering drug prices, i am lowering drug buys -- drug prices. first-time and 53 years. i am doing that -- i am doing that. first time in 53 years. the democrats don't seem to care about drug prices. all they care about is a phony investigation where the report was written. it said no collusion. the report was written and the attorney general based on the report was easily able to find there was not obstruction. there is no nothing. they are wasting their time. i know robert mueller is conflicted. there's a lot of conflicts he has got. included the fact that his best
6:00 pm
friend is comey. he has conflicts with me, too. he's got big conflicts with me. as you know he wanted the job of the fbi director, he didn't get it. and we had a business relationship where i said no. and i would say that he wasn't happy. then all of the sudden, he gets this position, but you know what he still ruled and i respect him for it, he still ruled no collusion, no obstruction. and this thing should have ended a long time ago. this has been going on for 2.5 years. allow thisr going to to happen to another president again, because most of them will be able to take it. on top of everything else, we have the strongest economy. we were just discussing this with the prime minister. we have the strongest economy the united states has ever had. had the highest stock market ever, literally, friday, thursday. we broke the record of 109 times -- we broke the record 109 times. thursday of last week, we had the all-time highest in the
6:01 pm
history of our country. our country is doing phenomenally well. unemployment is the lowest and 51 years. soon to be the lowest in history if it keeps going this way. hispanic, asian unemployment, the lowest in history, women, the lowest in 72 years. -- has ever done what we have done, nobody has done in 2.5 years what we have done. cuts inest regulation history, tax cuts in history, so many things for health care, we got rid of the individual mandate, which was the worst part of obama care. upended -- if we end up winning the house back, we should keep the presidency, the senate. we should keep the presidency when you have the strongest economy in our country. in theory, i have a big advantage. i am going to have to ask you. in theory, i have a big advantage. the democrats don't want to talk
6:02 pm
about that, they want to stay on the economy subject. what they are doing is hearing after hearing. it is nonsense. they tried an impeachment vote and got slaughtered last week. they got absolutely slaughtered. i didn't even know they were going to do it. theve a lot of respect for democrats, because most of them voted against impeachment leslie. i have a lot of respect -- impeachment last week. have a lot of respect for the democrats that are doing that. no collusion, notes section. ok? -- no collusion, no obstruction? ok? secretary mnuchin is talking about it. we are having good talks with the speaker of the house, nancy pelosi, very good talks with chuck schumer, and of course with mitch mcconnell and kevin mccarthy. i think we are doing very well on that. if you look at debt limit, however you want to define that,
6:03 pm
we are doing well on that. we are doing well on the budget, very important we take care of our military. our military was the pleated. in the last 2.5 years, we have on depleted. -- was depleted. in the last 2.5 years, we have uneplete -- undepleted. this year, we are putting our military back into the shape it has never been in before. the best missiles in the world, the best equipment in the world, the best military equipment in the world. we are building submarines. we are building, as you know, new submarines, new aircraft coming. the largest ship in the world. it is so large that maybe i could even land a plane on top of it. it is a big one. president gerald ford, it is a phenomenal ship.
6:04 pm
what we are doing is incredible things for our country. reporter: [indistinct] pres. trump: i might say this, about the military, it is all made in the usa . everything, 100%. it is one of the reasons are just numbers are so good. lowest unemployment. reporter: [indistinct] pres. trump: i can't say that yet, because so far he has not extended. after today's meeting, maybe he won't. i am looking to go to pakistan. reporter: [indistinct] is there any data or timeframe -- ?
6:05 pm
pres. trump: are you talking about from afghanistan? we have already withdrawn quite a few. we are doing it very slowly and safely. andre working with pakistan negotiating with the taliban. we are doing very well in that regard. it is something we can do, we can go one of two ways, we could do a number and the likes they have never seen before and win it very quickly, i don't want to do that. you're talking about millions of people, and i don't want to do that. we are working with pakistan on getting a solution. i think it is being worked very well. reporter: [indistinct] afghanistan? pres. trump: we are moving a lot of them out. we have done what we were supposed to do. we have been there for 19 years. we have acted as policemen, not soldiers.
6:06 pm
if we wanted to be soldiers, it would be over and one week to 10 days. week to 10 why would we kill millions of people? it would not be fair in terms of humanity. we are doing very well. i think that pakistan is going to be a big help. reporter: [indistinct] prime minister khan: this is the closest we had been to peace in afghanistan. there is a military solution in afghanistan. if you go all out military, they would be millions of people who would die. there is only one solution. i feel, and i think we would discuss this, it is the closest way of getting to a peace treaty. days,e that in the coming
6:07 pm
we will be able to urge the taliban to come to it a settlement -- a settlement, a political solution. pres. trump: what the prime minister just said is a very big story, 100% sure. we have made a lot of progress over the last couple of weeks. pakistan has helped us with that progress. a lot of great things are happening. a lot of things are happening for the u.s., and i think a lot of great things are going to be happening for pakistan, too, under your leadership. reporter: [indistinct] when it comes to negotiation, what about conflict? pres. trump: i think iran does not know where they are. right now, they are very mixed up. they don't know whether they are coming are going. they have tremendous problems economically. their country is in turmoil, they are having demonstrations all over iran. their inflation rates are 75%.
6:08 pm
they have a lot of problems. whatever it is, it is. i am just going to sit back and wait. let's see what happens. they are doing very poorly as a country. we will see what happens. , it is atually religious country, religious leaders, but they lie a lot. unfortunately, we had to shoot down a drone. the drone came down. you know how it came down, with new technology that is actually quite amazing. we took down one of their drones . instead of saying, yes, that happened, they lied. they said it didn't happen. there's a lot of proof. ins called take a look at it the ocean floor. take your scuba gear. importantly, i read a report today -- very importantly, i read a report
6:09 pm
today about the cia, they put out propaganda, they put out lies. i don't think pakistan would ever do a thing like that. pakistan never lies. but iran does, unfortunately. let's see what happens with iran. they're ready for the absolute worst, and we are ready for sense, too. we are very geared up. they are really the number one state of terror in the world. i have to say, they pulled back, because her money is running very low. the deal with obama was a disaster, because it was a short-term deal that did not cover ballistic missiles. you couldn't inspect the important sites, there were many things wrong. they gave $150 billion plus $1.8 billion in green beautiful cash. i think pakistan would have to have some of that cash. they gave $1.8 billion in cash, which is unthinkable.
6:10 pm
instead of being respectful and thankful, which frankly they should have been to the united states and to president obama for making that ridiculous deal, instead of being respectful, they put their finger up in the thumb, and they disrespected the united states. they shouldn't have done that. that was a big mistake. one of the things i have done is terminate that ridiculous deal. if they want to make a deal, frankly, it is getting harder for me to want to make a deal with iran because they behave very badly. they are saying bad things. i will tell you, it could go either way very easily. i'm ok either way it goes. reporter: [indistinct]
6:11 pm
reporter: what do you think pakistan could do? pres. trump: you mean what they didn't do to end the war? respectedink pakistan the united states. i don't think pakistan respected its presidents. i think pakistan could have done a lot. i think pakistan could do a tremendous amount with respect to afghanistan. they didn't do it. i don't blame them because they were dealing with their own president. who knows? i think pakistan could have done. helped us a have lot now, they could've helped a lot in the past, but they have a great new leader of pakistan, and we have a new leader here. it is getting to be three years, and you believe it? time flies. i think pakistan could have done a lot but they chose not to. that is because they did not
6:12 pm
respect u.s. leadership. reporter: [indistinct] pres. trump: i will let you know that very quickly, it is not going to be like a long term thing, i think we figure things out very quickly. the best question you have asked in a long time. asking mueller, mueller, mueller. she has been asking the smaller thing for three years. that is the best question. i have to focus on the. i think pakistan is going to do a lot. -- i have to focus on the. i think pakistan is going to do a lot. i think pakistan is going to save millions of lives in afghanistan, because they have the power that other nations do not have with respect to afghanistan. i will say as of this moment, they are working very hard. reporter: [indistinct] protesters in hong kong in the ongoing protests are being beaten.
6:13 pm
especially the hong kong and chinese government are looking the other way. have you seen any of that footage? pres. trump: i have. we arepresident xi, working on trade deals right now, we will see what happens. millions and millions of dollars in tariffs, which is fine with me. . i know that they are working -- i know that is a very important situation for president xi. you could also say he has allowed it to go on for a long time. it has been relatively nonviolent. do you think that people should be allowed to protest on the streets of hong kong? pres. trump: they are. china has not stopped them, they could stop them. i think president xi of china has acted responsibly. they have been out there protesting for a long time. i have nothing protests like it.
6:14 pm
looks like 2 million people. -- i have not seen protests like it. looks like it's 2 million people. it has been going on for a long time. there's no question about it. reporter: [indistinct] pres. trump: you want to take a question? reporter: [indistinct] reporter: what can pakistan due to fix things -- do to fix things? in reconciliation? prime minister khan: number one,
6:15 pm
this is the longest war that the united states has ever fought. those two, i am one of who always believes that there was no military solution, because anyone who knows the history of afghanistan, you just have to look back at the history. there was always going to be political sentiment at the end. i have to compliment president trump, because he has not force people to end the war, to have a sentiment. that is where i think pakistan is playing a very big important role, because pakistan has a 1500 mile with afghanistan -- mile border with afghanistan. this is a critical time. i am looking forward to my talks with president trump. leadership, tary because this is obviously a security situation.
6:16 pm
what we want is understanding between the two countries. i can assure president trump that whatever we will be saying -- will be straight for them, there will never be any question or doubt from pakistan. apart from afghanistan, the country that wants peace in afghanistan more than any other country is pakistan, because we are directly affected by it. pakistan needs stability. we have had 15 years of fighting this war. casualties.tani over $150 billion lost in the economy. we desperately want peace. i am happy that president trump has pushed us forward. -- this forward. i am looking forward to our talks. reporter: [indistinct] reporter: obama --[indistinct]
6:17 pm
prime minister khan: i will be asking president trump. it is the most popular country in the world, the united states. it can play the most important role in bringing peace in the subcontinent. billion and a one quarter people in the continent. they are held hostage to the issue. mostl that only the popular state with president trump can bring the two countries together. from my point i can tell you, we have tried our best with india to start dialogue, resolve our
6:18 pm
differences through dialogue. unfortunately, we have not been able to yet. i am hoping president trouble push this forward. pres. trump: i was with prime minister modi two weeks ago. he actually said, would you like to be a mediator or arbitrator? i said, where? because this has been going on for many many years. i was surprised at how long it has been going on. i think they would like to see a result. if i can help, i would love to be a mediator. to have twoible incredible countries that are very big, very smart -- with very big, smart leadership. if you want me to mediate or arbitrate, i would be happy to do that. prime minister khan: you will have the prayers of over a million people if you can
6:19 pm
mediate and resolve this issue. pres. trump: he has to the same thing. maybe we will speak to him or i will speak to him. i have read so much about kashmir. such a beautiful name. but right now, you have bombs a look at the place. it is a terrible situations. -- bombs all over the place. it is a terrible situation. a lot of you don't know this, but we dropped the largest nonnuclear bomb ever built in the history -- in history. we dropped it in afghanistan. we were getting ready to make many of those bombs. this left a hole that took out a lot of the tunnels. it left a hole in the earth that looked like the moon. like a crater from the moon. it is still there. nobody has ever seen anything like it. people herded 15 miles away. they said, what was that?
6:20 pm
it shook the earth. the largest ever made by far. they were going to make many of them, and i said no. i don't want to drop them. i don't want to do that. so many easy solutions. let'sey come in and say, have these, but you don't have to do that. i think we will very successful without having to go that route. i have tremendous confidence in the prime minister. one or two more, go ahead. go ahead, please. reporter: [indistinct] freedom of the press in pakistan -- prime minister khan: pakistan -- s
6:21 pm
pakistan has one of the freest presses in the world. receivedcism i have from my own press, unprecedented. pakistan press is a joke -- pres. trump: wait a minute. there is no way you are treated worse than i am. [laughter] pres. trump: i didn't hear your words. reporter: [indistinct] pres. trump: freedom of the press? we will do that. we are talking about hostages, we are talking about hostages being held in various places. i have had very good luck with hostages. with north korea, with many places that treated us with respect. i appreciate it.
6:22 pm
it made a big difference. we have two or three hostages we are talking about, one of the gentlemen we have heard about. we will be discussing that with many other subjects. trump,r: and, president we will be giving news about the two hostages -- amp, minister khan: president trump, we will be giving news about the two hostages. pres. trump: thank you. reporter: [indistinct] pres. trump: ask again? i really think they must hate our country. i think the four congressmen we are talking about -- congresswomen, what they have said about israel, what they have said about our country, when they talk about discussing people, when they talk the way they talk, when one mentioned
6:23 pm
that brown people should speak for brown people, muslim people should speak for muslim people, that is not what our country is about. i think they are very bad for our country, very bad for the democrat party. i think you see that. they are pulling the democrats we left. nobody knows how to handle them. -- way left. nobody knows how to handle them. they are very bad for our country, absolutely. tensions. there's no racial tension. i had my best numbers recently and it is because of the economy and what i have done for the african americans. african americans are doing better than they have ever done in our country. we are creating numbers. look at the poverty numbers, look at some many different unemployment numbers, the best they have ever had. we have fantastic relationships with the african-american community. i think you will see that. certainly you will see that in
6:24 pm
2020. reporter: [indistinct] reporter: do you think you're going to win the 2020 election? corruptiono having and pakistan. pres. trump: i think he is going to win. i am going to campaign for you. i am going to help him win. reporter: [indistinct] pakistan is looking to create strong relationships. pres. trump: i agree. i think that is very true. the answer is yes, i see great trade with pakistan. i am not talking about a little bit. we can go 10 and even 20 times what we are doing now.
6:25 pm
pakistan is a big country. it is actually a very big country. they have tremendous products, they make great products. i have bought from pakistan over in thers when i was private sector, they make incredible products, they are brilliant, hard-working people. i don't mean we will increase it by 20%, i think we can quadruple it. literally, sounds great. we can go 10 times more, 20 times more. what we do right now is not much, and we should do a lot. i also do agree that it has so much to do with great piece. peace and extremism. we are within a very short period of time to have significant trade with pakistan. reporter: since you met with kim jong-un -- pres. trump: probably they would like to meet, we will see what
6:26 pm
happens. there was very positive correspondence recently. again, there is no nuclear testing, no missile testing, no nothing. i think we will -- when they are ready, we will be ready. reporter: [indistinct] pres. trump: go ahead. reporter: [indistinct] prime minister khan: it is being discussed. that would be afterwards. pres. trump: we will be discussing it.
6:27 pm
reporter: do you think the u.s. will be playing a role? pres. trump: i think i can very well, i have a good relationship with prime minister modi. i think we will have a phenomenal relationship with the prime minister of pakistan. i do think that it is a two-way street. you say india is coming in and destabilizing pakistan, but it is saying pakistan is coming in, there is a lot of room right there where we can meet. you had a question on puerto rico? did he step down? he is a terrible governor. i think you have an even worse mayor of san juan. she is horrible. i watched her, my people did nothing but complain about her when we helped them with their hurricane problems. the mayor of san juan, puerto
