tv Campaign 2020 Sen. Bernie Sanders Speaks at Las Vegas Rally CSPAN February 19, 2020 2:28am-2:47am EST
a.m., brian mccarthy and general james army'sll on the modernization strategy for competing with russia and china. senator bernie sanders spoke to supporters at a get out the early vote rally tuesday on the university of nevada las vegas campus. this event comes ahead of that state's caucus this saturday. sen. sanders: let me think jackie -- thank jackie and mike
luckily, mario res, emily matteo, give it up for remarks.h for their this is, as i think all of you know, the most consequential election in the modern history of america, maybe in american history. and what our campaign is about are two fundamental issues. willr one, we must and we defeat the most dangerous president in the modern history of america. the american people, regardless of their political views,
understand that for the sake of the future of this nation, we cannot continue to have an office -- in office a president who is a pathological liar, a president who is running a corrupt administration, a underminingo is american democracy and does not understand the constitution of the united states of america. that we cannot continue to have in office a president who is a sexist, a homophobe, a xenophobe, and a religious bigot. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: and those are his good qualities. about morepaign is than defeating trump. creatingign is about
an economy and a government that works for all of us, not just wealthy campaign contributors. the working families of this ofntry are sick and tired the grotesque level of income and wealth inequality that exists. longer hours,ng they are working two or three jobs, and almost all new income and wealth goes to the top 1%. [booing] sen. sanders: the working people of this country are tired of a corrupt political system in which alien errors -- billionaires think they can buy an election. today we say to all of those billionaires who think they can buy elections, we are a democracy, not an oligarchy. you are not going to buy this
election. reason we are going to win here in nevada, with your help, the reason we are going to win the democratic nomination with your help, the reason we are going to beat trump is because we have an agenda that speaks to the needs of working families, not the billionaire class. [cheers and applause] our agenda is not complicated. it says if you work 40 hours a week, you should not live in poverty. we are going to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: it says to women that we are going to end the absurdity of women making $.80 on the dollar compared to men. equal pay for equal work.
[cheers and applause] sen. sanders: it says to the millions of workers who want to join unions to get better wages and working conditions, we are going to make it easier for you to join unions. double union membership in four years. it says to the young people of this country, you should not have to go deeply into debt in order to get a higher education. we have to redefine what public education means in the year 2020 and what it means to me is that we make public colleges and universities tuition free. we cancel all student debt. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: through a modest plause] when we talk about
an agenda that works for working families, it means we are going d the international embarrassment of being the only major country on earth that does not guarantee health care to all people as a human right. now, if canada can do it and the u.k. can do it and france and germany and holland and sweden and denmark and norway, if they can guarantee health care to all people, as a human right, don't tell me we can't do that in the united states. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: the function of a rational and humane health care system is to provide quality care to all, not to make billions in profits for the
insurance companies and the drug companies. the american people are sick and by far theying highest prices in the world for prescription drugs. cases 10ying in some times more for the same exact medicine as is sold in canada or other countries. we have news for the drug companies. nd corruption,o e price-fixing, and greed in america. we are no longer going to pay the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: now, donald trump is wrong on almost everything. is dangerously wrong on the issue of climate change.
,oday, we told the president climate change is not a hoax. climate change is an existential threat to this country and the planet. [cheers and applause] unlike donald trump, unlike trump, our administration, are you ready for a radical idea? our administration believes in science, not right-wing extremism. [cheers and applause] knowsanders: as all of you , sad to say the president does not, but you know that the scientists are telling us that the crisis of climate change is even worse than they had previously thought. what they are telling us is we are going to have to act in an incredibly bold and aggressive
way to transform our energy system away from fossil fuels, energy efficiency, and sustainable energy as quickly as we possibly can. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: and that is why we have introduced the most sweeping climate change proposal ever introduced by a candidate for federal office based on the principle of the green new deal. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: and what that good is we can create paying union jobs as we move away from fossil fuels to sustainable energies and energy efficiency. have ae in nevada you very precious natural resource
shining on us right now. this state should be a leader in solaruntry in terms of energy. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: when we talk about an agenda that works for working families we are going to completely reform a broken and racist criminal justice system. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: i don't want to live in a country in which we have more people in jail disproportionately african-american, latino, and native american. more people in jail than any other country on earth. ourre going to invest in education,e in jobs, not more incarceration. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: we are going to ders and we are going
to end the destructive war on drugs. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: on my first day in office as an executive order, we can legalize marijuana in every state in this country. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: we will move aggressively to expunge the records of those arrested for marijuana. and when we talk about broken systems, we are also going to end a broken immigration system. as the son of anmy dad came to this country at the age of 17 without a nickel in his pocket, very limited education, did not speak a word of english. sick and tired of trump and
his donizing the undocumented. we are going to end that. [cheers and applause] in office, weay are going to rescind all of trump's racist immigration executive orders. we are going to reestablish the legal status for 1.8 million young people and their parents eligible for daca. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: we are going to end the current border policy under our administration, federal agents will not be snatching babies from the arms he will do what the american people want us to do.
immigrationensive reform and a path toward citizenship for the 11 million undocumented. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: i know that nevada and not only nevada, but nevada has seen some horrible, horrible gun violence and mass killings. i know that. here is my promise to you. our gun policy, our gun safety policy, will be determined by the american people, not the nra. [cheers and applause] we will have universal background checks. people with violent pasts should not be owning guns. we are going to end the gun show loophole, and we are going to do with the american people want us to do right now. to end the sale and distribution
of assault weapons in this country. [cheers and applause] so here we are at a pivotal moment in american history. , where are in nevada there will be a caucus on saturday at noon. where there is early voting, which will end today. you -- myo all of plea to all of you, and i'm happy to take a walk to the polling place. [cheers and applause] is, let uss: that have in this nevada caucus, let us have the largest turnouts that the iowa -- that the nevada caucus has ever seen.
all right? [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: our young generation, let me say this to the young people here. the most progressive young generation in the history of this country. [cheers and applause] is. sanders: your generation more antiracist, anti-sexist, anti-homophobia, antireligious bigotry, anti-xenophobia, than any generation in american history. and you should be proud of that. that is the good news. here is the bade seeing good changes, the bad news is that young people still do not vote in the kinds of numbers they should be voting. under 29 voted
at the same rate as people 65 or older, we would transform this country. is that, youu know, we won the iowa caucus, the popular vote there. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: we won the new hampshire primary. if there is a large voter we are here in nevada, going to win the caucus here. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: a caucus, we are going to do and if we do well on super tuesday, we are going to win the democratic nomination. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: and if we win the democratic nomination, we will
defeat donald trump. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: so let us do everything we can. if not this afternoon, come to a caucus on saturday, but let us have a huge voter turnout. let us win in nevada. thank you all very much. >> during this election season, the candidates beyond the talking points are only revealed over time. c-span. our campaign 2020 program
