tv Campaign 2020 Sen. Bernie Sanders Speaks at Las Vegas Rally CSPAN February 19, 2020 6:41am-6:59am EST
sen. sanders: this is, as i think all of you know, the most consequential election in the modern history of america and may in american history. about areampaign is two fundamental issues. number one, we must and we will defeat the most dangerous president in the history of america. -- modern history of america. [applause] sen. sanders: the american people, regardless of the political views, understand that for the sake of the future of this nation, we cannot continue to have in office a president who is a pathological liar, a
president who is running a corrupt administration, a president who is undermining american democracy and does not understand the constitution of the united states of america. that we cannot continue to have in office a president who is a , a homophobe, a xenophobe, antireligious bigot. [applause] -- and a religious bigot. [applause] sen. sanders: and those are his good qualities. our campaign is about more than defeating trump read our campaign is about creating an economy and a government that works for all of us, not just wealthy campaign contributors.
families of this country are sick and tired of the grotesque level of income and wealth inequality that exists. they are working longer hours, they are working two or three jobs and almost all new income and wealth goes to the top 1%. the working people of this country ought tired of a corrupt political system in which billionaires think they can body elections. -- think they can buy elections. we say to them today we are a democracy, not an oligarchy. you are not going to buy this election. [applause] the reason we are going to win here in nevada with
your help, the reason we are going to win the democratic nomination with your help, the reason we are going to defeat trump is because we have an agenda that speaks for the needs of working families, not the billionaire class. [applause] sen. sanders: our agenda is not complicated, it says that if you work 40 hours a week, you should not live in poverty. we are going to raise the federal minim wage to $15 an hour. it says to women that we will end the absurdity of women making $.80 on the dollar compared to men, equal pay for equal work. [applause] sen. sanders: it says to the millions of workers who want to join in unions to get better wages and working conditions, we will make it easier for you to
join unions, double union membership in four years. to the young people of this country, you should not have to go deeply into debt in order to get a higher education. [applause] sen. sanders: we have to redefine what public education means in the year 2020 and what it means to me is that we make public colleges and university tuition free. [applause] debtsanrs cancel all student through a modest tax on wall street speculation. [applause] when we talk and about an agenda that works for working families, it means that
we will end the international embarrassment of being the only major country on earth that does not guarantee health care to all people as a human right. [applause] now canada can do it and the u.k. can do it and france and germany and holland and sweden and denmark and norway, if they can guarantee health care to all people as a human right, don't tell me that we can't do that in the united states. [applause] sen. sanders: the function of a rational and humane health care system is to provide quality care to all, not to make billions in profit for the insurance companies and the drug companies. people are sick and
tired of paying by world for prescription drugs. cases, 10ing in some times more for the same exact medicine as is sold in canada or other countries. so we have news for the drug companies, we are going to end their corruption, their price-fixing and their greed in america we are no longer going to pay the higher prices for prescription drugs. now donald trump is wrong on almost everything, but he is dangerously wrong on the issue of climate change. tell the president. climate change is not a hoax.
climate change is an existential threat to this country on the planet. [applause] unlike donaldand trump, unlike trump, our administration, are you ready for a radical idea here? all right. .ur administration believes in [applause] and as all of you know. sad to say the president is not, but you do know that the scientists are telling us that the crisis of climate change is even worse than they had previously thought. and what they are telling us is we are going to have to act in an incredibly bold and aggressive way to transform our energy system away from fossil
fuel to energy efficiency and sustainable energy as quickly as we possibly can. sen. sanders: that is why we have introduced the most sweeping climate change proposal ever introduced by a candidate for federal office based on the principles of the green new deal. and what that means, what that means is we can create up to 20 million good paying union jobs as we move away from fossil fuel to sustainable energies and energy efficiency and here in nevada you have a very precious natural resource that shining on us right now, this state should be a leader in the country in
terms of solar energy. [applause] and when we talk about an agenda that works for goingg families, we are to completely reform a broken and racist criminal justice system. [applause] sen. sanders: i don't want to live in a country in which we have more people in jail disproportionately african-american, latino, and native american, more people in invest in ourother country on young people, in jobs, and education, not more jails, not more incarceration. [applause] sen. sanders: we are going to end private prisons and detention centers. end there going to
destructive war on drugs. [applause] sen. sanders: on my first day in , wece as an executive order can legalize marijuana in every state in this country. [applause] movesanders: we will theessively to expunge records of those arrested for marijuana. [applause] sen. sanders: and when we talk about broken systems, we are also going to end a broken immigration system. as the son of an immigrant, my 17 came to this country of without a nickel in his pocket, very limited education, could not speak a word of english. i am sick and tired of trump and
his friends demonizing the undocumented. we are going to end that. [applause] day sanders: on our first we are going to rescind all of trump's racist immigration executive orders. [applause] day sanders: on our first in office, we are going to sign an executive order reestablishing the legal status for 1.8 million young people and their parents eligible for daca. [applause] sen. sanders: we are going to end the current border policy under our administration, federal agents will not be snatching babies from the arms of their mothers. [applause] sen. sanders: and under our administration, we will do what the american people want us to do, pass comprehensive immigration reform and a path
toward citizenship for the 11 million undocumented. nevada has seen some horrible gun violence and mass killing. i know that. and here is my promise to you. our gun policy, our gun safety policy will be determined by the american people, not the nra. [applause] that means we will have universal background checks , people with violent pasts should not be owning guns. we are going to end the gun show provision and wegoing to end are going to do with the he arican people want us to do right now, and the sale and distribution of assault weapons in this country. [applause] so here we are at
a pivotal moment in american nevada, here we are in where there will be a caucus on saturday at noon where there is early voting, which will end today. so mike lee to all of you and i'm happy to take a little walk with you over to the polling place. [applause] sen. sanders: and that is let us caucus, let nevada us have a -- the largest turnout caucus has ever seen. [applause] now our young generation, me say this for the
young people here. you're the most progressive young generation in the history of this country. [applause] generation isyour more antiracist, anti-sexist, anti-homophobia, antireligious bigotry, anti-xenophobia than any generation in american history. [applause] sen. sanders: and you should be proud of that. that is the good news. here's the bad news. the bad news is although we are seeing good changes in this, the bad news is young people still do not vote in the kinds of numbers they should be voting. if young people under 29 for example voted the same rate as people 65 or older, we would transform this country. [applause] you w -- so my plea to you.
the popular vote of the iowa caucus. we won the new hampshire primary and if there is a large voter turnout here in nevada, i believe we will win the caucus here. [applause] sen. sanders: and if we win the caucus here, we will do really well in south carolina, california and out super tuesday. and if we do well on super tuesday, we are going to win the democratic nomination. [applause] sen. sanders: and if we win the democratic nomination, we will defeat donald trump. [applause]
so let us do everything that we can. i hope some of you will be able to vote this afternoon, if not this afternoon, come to a caucus on saturday. but let us have a huge voter turnout, let's win in nevada. thank you all very much. >> live wednesday on the c-span networks. a look at efforts to counter propaganda and disinformation. we are live from the george washington university program on extremism at 10:00 a.m. on c-span. and at 1:00 p.m. the announcement of the george polk awards in journalism and a panel on how reporters cover wars. at 9:00 p.m., president trump
