one person has died as a result of the events that took place just after midnight london time when a van mowed down worshipers leaving a mosque that had been shut down as an extremist mosque, then reformed. here is what x know. at least one person is dead. a van slamming into a group of people near a mosque in london. one person has been killed. several others injured. reporter: one person has been arrested, but no other information about that suspect has been released. one man telling our british sister station that one suspect jumped from the van with a knife, stabbing another person,
9:01 pm
and he was held by worshipers until police arrived. three suspects were in the van at the time, and the van veered intentionally to hit bystanders. that information comes from witnesses at the scene and has not been confirmed by police. according to the muslim counsel the collision happened outside the muslim welfare house. police said the van ran over what was likely hundreds of worshipers leaving after midnight ramadan prayers. the prime minister's office says she has been told about the crash and describes it as a terrible incident. the injured have been taken to area hospitals. it's unclear if this is a
9:02 pm
terror-related incident. but authorities are continuing to investigate a possible cause. it was shut down and reorganized and has not been associated with radical views for a decade. gregg: london's alert risk was raised after recent he excellent including a similar attack on a london bridge three weeks ago. the suspect in that attack went on to stab several bystanders. 8 people in all were killed in that attack, several others were injured. three muslim extremists who
9:03 pm
carried out the london bridge attacks were killed by london police. it was just days ago when london suffered that horrific tragedy. there you see pictures of that massive inferno that ripped through a 24-story building in north kensington on the west side of the city. in the attack on the north side of the city. but that blaze broke out in the early morning hours wednesday. 18 people roughly are still hospitalized. several in critical condition. and several people injured, one dead after a van plowed into pedestrian near a mosque in northern london. one person is under arrest. no word on that person's identity or the condition of some of the survivors of the attack. as many perhaps as 10. many of the injuredelieved to be worshipers.
9:04 pm
they just left this london mosque after midnight ramadan prayers. we have been tuning into our sister network sky news. >> you can see the three police carriers which have now been parked across the road acting as a roadblock to stop any vehicles getting up toward the scene itself. officers carry out their investigation at the scene. as you get forensic teams in there to take photographs to measure out the scene and determine the exact sequence of events. reporter: thank you very much. let's talk to chris, the former
9:05 pm
head of the national counter-terrorism security office. can you give us a sense of how this investigation, where it will be going now that it's been confirmed it's being treated as a potential terrorist attack. >> another disastrous morning for the u.k. unfortunately. they are still busy dealing with the terrorist attack we had a few week ago. the important thing is to make sure that we try to pick up anyone that might be involved in this. this could be a lone-wolf, lone actor attack, or maybe there are other people involved as well. this will be treated as a terrorist attack just as all the others have. reporter: often with a terrorist incident they don't end up with someone in custody. do you think it will be significant that they have this individual who has been taken to
9:06 pm
hospital at the moment, and when he's released, he will be arrested? >> it appears to be one person. but of course we won't be jumping to conclusions on that. they will look at all his history and who he has been with and talking to the last 12 months to identify whether other people are been identified with this. but this is normal stuff. and of course normal stuff, the police and resources we have got. it's a terrible thing to happen. and it's almost impossible to stop this unless we stop and arrest them before they get in the van. reporter: why is it almost impossible to stop if it's a lone wolf attack?
9:07 pm
>> those people who are willing or want to do something crazy. in general policing terms, many hundreds of thousands of those across the country. so people that choose to go do this, it's a difficult thing for police to stop. we can't protect everyone on he pavement across the u.k. that's an impossible task. reporter: when you are looking at a potential terrorist attack. is the best way to deal with it policing or the intelligence agency where you have to catch this? >> it's pretty early to say who did it or why they did it. but we can all probably take a guess at that. but the british are so stretched on the investigations and inquiries going on lots other people, thousands of people across e u.k.
9:08 pm
to some extent it's no surprise we have seen this, and i think unfortunately it's not the last terrorist attack we'll have the next 6 months, 12 months. reporter: there i a sense that it's too big of a task. how do we address this? >> that is the $million question across the world we are trying to work out. if you look at the terrorist attacks that happened in muslim countries. it's a breaking apart society. we have to make sure people don't see this as normalized. we have to make sure people are aware they should be reporting those that have lets' say talking about doing something like this and make sure. that's the on way we can stop
9:09 pm
this is by people being willing to come forward. but that will never give us 100% security. reporter: in term the investigation, how will they be looking to see if this is a lone wolf attack or an individual with a network of support? >> well, almost certainly now, they won't know who this person is. they will know perhaps for the investigations in the past, his associates, they will know and be able to get access to his phone, his computer system to find out if he's a lone actor or whether there are people who have been urging him on or helping him. even with a lone actor attack, it's a massive investigation for the yoaf stretched police. reporter: the latest news we
9:10 pm
have is the british. he confirmed the incident is being treated as a potential terrorist attack and she'll share an emergency response meeting monday after this incident at the cobra meeting. the british prime minister theresa may will chair a cobra response meeting monday after this incident. let's go to ashish. you have been speaking to extremely angry people. you are speaking to mohammed abdullah. grigg: you have brand-new listening to sky news, our sister network covering the london attack.
9:11 pm
worshipers coming out of the finsbury mosque were mowed down by a van where a suspect is in custody, being questioned by police. if all of this sound too familiar, you can go to our website foxnews.com, and you will see a long list of terrorist attacks that occurred, many of them involving trucks, but not all. june 3 it was the van and the stabbing of people on london bridge. before that the ariana grande concert. the champs-elysees attack where a gunman got out of the truck with an automatic attack. the westminster bridge attack. a van was used or a vehicle that mowed down people on the bridge.
9:12 pm
before that the knife attack in paris. the germany christmas market attack, a truck plowing into a christmas market near central berlin. and here in the youth, an attack at ohio state, a university student ran his car into a group of student, then got out and slashed people with a butcher knife. hamburg, germany the say sort of thing. and it goes back to 78 people who died when a track ran through a crowd of party-goers in nice, france. reporter: the london ambulance service confirmed they treated 8 people at the scene and transported them to the hospital and they confirm they treated a number of people there on the scene and let them go. they said 60 medic came to help that are still there trying to figure out what happened.
9:13 pm
police are saying it is indeed a suspected terrorist incident. joining us, steve rogers. a former member of the f.b.i. joint terrorism task force. they are identifying it as a potential terrorism event. where do they go from here now that they at least said the word? steve: they said the word, now the investigation will be focused on whether this individual was associated with any terrorist organization. are there accomplices involved in this particular incident? many times there are reconnaissance operations before they execute the actual attack, so they are probably going to go back and look at video footage going back a month or two. they will look at his computers, cell phones, a lot of forensics are being done as we speak. they will have to find an answer
9:14 pm
to the question, was this individual directed by another individual or another organization that may be part of a terrorist cell. that's a problem, one that's going to have to be answered. many of them as we know are suicidal. they don't care who they kill, they don't care if they kill themselves. two, three days later you have a terrorist organization like isis that proudly says, we are responsible for that. these individual don't care if they die or not. they want everyone to know that they did this. gregg: i just got through reading maybe only a quarter of the list of attacks that have taken place over the course of the last year and a half. there seems to be one common denominator. that is the use of a vehicle to
9:15 pm
mow people down and knives that are being brandished and used to stab people, oftentimes after the vehicle comes to rest. so is this the new method of terrorism? it's not the large-scale use of jetliners that have been flown into planes, but individual attacks with something as fundamental and simple to obtain as vehicles and knives are being used. steve: it seems to be succeeding to some degree because in this particular city they are spreading terror all over the place. a vehicle you cannot detect it's going to be used to run people down. it's difficult to find individuals who will commit these attacks. it's much more difficult to get a bomb into an area and the instruments to build the bomb into a particular area.
9:16 pm
so low tech, under the ray dash, and this is the result of it. gregg: we are just getting word that the individual has brand-new arrested in police custody, was actually apprehended by a crowd of people who survived the attack by the van and grabbed him and handled him over to police. he's described as 48 years old, not sure that by itself means a lot. but it's one more piece of information that we wanted to pass along to you. we don't have his identity and his motive. police may have his moti depending upon whether he is talking. reporter: you are looking at video taken earlier, i believe, when we saw and heard about a van plowing through a crowd of people in northern london after a crowd got out from the mosque. we have worshipers coming out
9:17 pm
from the mosque. ite witnesses are saying they believed three people were inside that van. the driver of the van is now in police custody. he's a 48-year-old man. we'll learn more about him. gregg: 17 minutes after the hour. we'll pause and take a quick break. one dead and 10 injured in yet another vehicle attack. it's jus, i could fix it. (laugh) no. with claim rateguard your rates won't go up just because of a claim. i totally could've - no! switching to allstate is worth it. if you have moderate to severe ulcerative colitis or crohn's, and your symptoms have left you with the same view, it may be time for a dferent perspective. if other treatments haven't worked well enough, ask your doctor about entyvio, the only biologic developed and approved

9:21 pm
reporter: it's 20 minutes after midnight on the east coast. a van plowed into a group of people leaving a months income london. we have witnesses saying there could have been three people inside that van. two people jumped out and are believed to be on the run right now. gregg: joining us from london, jonathon, what can you tell us? >> we know little information about the attacker. but we do know the police
9:22 pm
arrested a 48-year-old man. normally these attacks are motivated by islamist ideology. in this case eye witnesses say they recognized the attacker as a white man with tattoos. so this could be some sort of revenge-inspired attack from an extremist from the far right or anti-muslim extremist who deliberately targeted worshipers. gregg: are there many such right-wing extremists in london? >> certainly terrorist attack if that's what this is being cat gorized as, carried out by white extremists and in this style, vehicle running, that's highly unusual.
9:23 pm
ifou look at vehicle ramming, it's normally carried out by islamist attackers. we can think about the london bridge and westminster bridge attacks. gregg: if this is as you describe, and i think it's a realistic possibility given the photograph i have taken a look at of what appears to be the suspect. you maybe right about this, a revenge attack. does that underscore how much anger there may be among the populists over the myriad attacks london suffered over the last several months? >> i think the attackers carrying out this sort of vicious attack will be seen by
9:24 pm
londoners as a horrific attack. london seems to be going through a very difficult time at the moment in relation to terrorist attacks. gregg: what is the feeling about law enforcement in london? are they getting low marks? average high marks? how do londoners view them? >> it's difficult to police instances like this. they are normally stopped before they are attempted to be carried out. intelligence is key when it comes to attacks like this one. when it's people using kitchen knives like we have seen in recent attacks, it's impossible to stop them. but this will be an interesting case. we'll have to see if police have any information on this attack happening against muslim people and whether they have any
9:25 pm
information on the attack, several people that might have helped the attack carry out. reporter: are you saying there is an increase in any security at mosques? you would hope you would see something like that after the last couple months we have had. >> there has been talk after attacks as a backlash against muslims. society tends to be extremely careful to prevent backlashes. this is proof there can be a threat and somebody has deliberately gone and driven a vehicle into pedestrians outside of mosques and killed one person with 10 others injured. 3 people being treated at the scene and 8 others taken to hospitals by ambulance.
9:26 pm
in terms of the month of ramadan, it's a holy month. reporter: what about the political climate? does that may a part in think of these attacks and the tension on the streets? >> we have just been through a general reflects united kingdom that had unexpected results. theresa may is our prime minister for the moment. but having to try to negotiate with the northern irish party to allow her to couple with an agreement to keep her as prime minister. she has been attacked by the opposition who say they hasn't done enough on anti-terrorism. she cut police funds and police
9:27 pm
numbers. gregg: jonathon, after the last attack which was so vicious on london bridge and the restaurants and the stabbings, theresa may laid down publicly the gauntlet and said this is enough. and she vowed to take stern action. i'm a little vague on what that would be. did you notice a change? did law enforcement become more militarized? and what about the intelligence services? >> the general election didn't do much in terms of legislative action at the moment. but there were people from the army with weapons on the street. very unusual in the u.k. it's now back down to the second highest level it can be.
9:28 pm
which is the highest it can be when there is no imminent threat. however, there has been a strong police presence in the public trying to set people's minds at rest. police said they will have a presence around muslim locations to insure those people nonhonorring the month of ramadan and their religion. reporter: is the government taking action against the extremists? are they saying this is not us. this is not what we believe in. >> there are many voices saying that. it has had control in trying to deal with that issue. exactly why these attackers would have been doing reconnaissance in advance of
9:29 pm
this and whether they planned on this location for some time, that will come out in due course. there are plenty of voices in the u.k. it's common in the name of islam. but others say terrorist incidents have increased and that means there is a problem with islamic extremism. reports on extremists and also within the wider police community and intelligence services. jonathon, thank you very much for your insights. to recap before we take a quick break, one person is dead, many others have been injured when a van driven by a 48-year-old suspect plowed into bystanders emerging just after he midnight london time from prayers at a

9:36 pm
mosque to mosque. we recite the quran nightly. after the evening prayer. some mosques take an hour, others take a half-hour. for the driver to know when that would happen, it must have been a planned event. this is exactly what isis wants. isis wants to rip apart society. they want vigilante acts to happen so muslims can be separated out even more and they become more forward for radicalization. if there is ever a time for religious freedom to be the fear against radical islam. but first thing first. if this does end up being an individual, we need to shore up our values of religious freedom.
9:37 pm
reporter: something we see year after year when it comes to ramadan. be on alert and supposedly we see more security around these mosques. i don't know if we saw additional security. but that's something we see year after year because it's a crucial time for muslims. >> it is. as much as the vast majority of muslims are more self-reflective, the jihadists, the militant, we saw an ice cream parlor was hit because families go to have some food at night and be together. and they were attacked in a sectarian act of violence in baghdad. we see huge strikes during ramadan by jihadists because the biggest threat to them is moderate muslims.
9:38 pm
so we need to, i think, ultimately begin to look at what their long-term strategy -- are we going to take each one of these events in a whack-a-mole fashion and battle acts of terror between different groups or steel our resolve and look for solutions against a global ideology. the fight of this ideology. we are able to do things in places like london and america that you can't do in saudi arabia and iraq. so it's easy to say these are small scattered attacks. the solution has to start here in the west because we have the tools to do things they can't do in syria or baghdad. gregg: mr. jaser, try as many americans and parent throughout the world to explain these events to their children. it makes no sense to children nor adults because violence in
9:39 pm
the name of religion is anathema to ridge teachings. but this is what we are seeing. the abuse of the muslim faith and the teachings in the quran don't bear any resemblance to the acts being committed. how do you make sense of this? >> you know, it's about where is islam in its time in history. the 30 years war. 8 million people died in europe in religious wars. this is where islam is at this time. islam in a quarter of the world's population is beginning to try to shed the yoke of autocracy and yearn for freedom.
9:40 pm
there will be bloodshed and the free world that ys ideas and freedom. either we are in this for the long-haul. the reason i wrote my book, the battle for the soul of islam. the legacy for my kids, i hope they are raised with the ideology they would rather die for america or britain than jihad. that's what our security forces need to focus on. no longer waiting for the guy to put on a suicide belt and acts of terror, but working with groups that are willing to undercut the ideology of the militant. gregg: the trouble is when it comes to fanatics, reasoning and rationalizing doesn't tend to work. so certainly this is going to be a huge obstacle in any solution
