" trump is currently neck-and-neck with texas senator ted cruz in most recent iowa polls. also in dubuque, voters gathered to hear r at carly fiorina had to say in one of her last stops ahead of monday night. who leads the race for the white house. often, polling information is a week old by the time it's published. three professors at the university of iowa had an idea to look elsewhere for the nation's political pulse. that's why they created a first-of-its-kind website. tv-9's forrest saunders reports. saturday, ian price was using his free time reading to one of his kids at the downtown library.but, look at his shirt, you'll know he's politically involved. "big sanders supporter. he's had a message that's resonated with me."ian spends a good deal of time reading and somemeositing about polititil stuff on social media. he's not alone. "fifty percent of americans use social media sites such as twitter and facebook to get information about politics."professor shafiq is onenef three ui who set out to learn more about people's political postings. over the last about two years, the three developed this website: left-right politics dot com and the algorithms to run it. it centers on the top ten primary candidates
of them? the site collects trending tweets about the ten. also, top trending news. but the site's key feature is these charts. the page analyzes tweets to find which republicans and democrats have the most positive posts. the site then plots the data on the graphs. "all this information really is untapped. there is no portal which can actually allow people to go and look at what are all the conversation s happening on these websites." shafiq says this kind of data is important because the charts give a by the day perspective on the pulse of the nation. some features update even faster. a normal poll would likely take a week or more for results. "polling data is offline. it is slow. it is cumbersome. polling companies will tell you that they cannot repeat the process everyday." the site is up and running as a few weeks ago. that means, guys like ian have another resource while cruising the web for political insight. "i think it's definitely a good gauge to the local polls and the national polls."
