police believe the same man shot and killed urbandale police officer justin martin... and, twenty minutes later, des moines police sergeant tony beminio. investigators say the shooter is 46-year-old scott greene of urbandale. about eight hours after the shootings, green turned himself into a d-n-r employee in dallas county, about 30 miles west of des moines. police say officer martin was in his squad car when greene shot him near urbandale high school around 1 a-m yesterday. just minutes later, they say he shot sergeant beminio who was parked in his squac road in des moines. sgt. beminio was helping to patrol the area. court records reveal the suspect - scott greene - has a history with police -- and was well-known to urbandale police. in 2014, he pleaded guilty to interference with official acts for resisting urbandale police trying to pat him down for a weapon. the officer described him as hostile and combative. that same year, he pleaded guilty to a harassment charge after threatening to kill another man during a

completed court- ordered substance abuse treatment and a psychological evaluation. police departments all across iowa are not only mourning this loss -- but also trying to be even more aware of their surroundings. kcrg-tv9's samantha myers spoke with waterloo police chief dan trelka on how he is trying to keep his officers safe. trelka says he sent out an email to his officers as soon as he found out about the police killings in des moines. he says he authorized his officers to wear mourning bands on their badges and to told them to anytime an officer is killed, trelka says he thinks about the families and what they go through. "16:23:10;22 i immediately start thinking of the officers because my biggest worry with the officer is yes we sign up for this but our families haven't and this impacts our families it causes an extreme amount of stress and concern for our loved ones " in times of tragedy there also comes an outpouring of support. trelka says his department received numerous donations. and that he's been blown away and humbled by the show of support in the community. in the newsroom

one act of kindness did take place in urbandale just hours after yesterday's shooting. a woman brought water and food to an officer, and hugged him in what was an emotional moment. " i cant even imagine. this is the only thing i know. i want you guys to be hydrated and not hungry/ i want you to go home to your families, and i want my dad to come home emotional crying " did cancel some of the political stops for the des moines area -- but not all of them. overnight, republican vice presidential nominee mike pence and his wife stopped at the des moines police department. there, the indiana

"the hearts of the nation are breaking for the families of these two courageous officers and for the entire law enforcement family and for the community of des moines. " pence is scheduled to speak in iowa today. he'll be campaigning on a farm in the small central iowa town of prole . that's near indianola. pence's rally starts at 11 a-m. while campaigning in florida, donald trump called yesterday a terrible tragedy for all police officers. the presidential nominee defended law enforcement, saying it's the line separating civilization from total chaos "and what it is is a lack of respect for our nation, a lack of respect for our leadership. to all the great men and women of law enforcement we are with you, we support you we stand by you. " trump went on to say his presidency would restore law and order and justice in america.

several cities yesterday, including here in iowa city. the virginia senator told iowans the attack on des moines area officers speaks to the challenges ahead. "if we don't endeavor to learn, we make a huge mistake. our hearts are with you here in iowa as you grapple with this tragedy. " former president bill clinton did cancel a stop in d center for the arts yesterday afternoon. as he is campaigning for hillary clinton, the 42nd president talked about "rules that we all agree to follow" in business. in recent days, attacks between the clinton and trump campaigns have centered on character and whether the other side follows the rules. " we believe that competition works well in a free market. in all three of those cases the only reason it works is there are rules we all agree to follow. at least most of us do. like if you sign a contract to pay a guy, you need to pay him, not stiff

hillary clinton says the deadly shooting of the two police officers is "horrifying" and "heartbreaking." speaking at a campaign rally in las vegas, clinton says she called the mayors of urbandale and des moines "i certainly expressed our condolence and told them that my thoughts and prayers were with the families of the fallen officers and with their fellow officers. " the former secretary of state says she believes everyone is safer when there is shared respect between police and the people. in a tv-9 follow-up this morning.. doctors have told the family of a man who a cedar rapids police officer shot tuesday that they're hopeful he'll slowly improve. 37-year-old jerime mitchell remains in critical condition at university of iowa hospitals. police say he got into some kind of altercation with an officer early tuesday morning on coe road ne -- just north of 1st avenue.

wounding mitchell. now the iowa division of criminal investigation is looking into the shooting. police say there is dash cam video, which is one of the things the d-c-i is reviewing. only a few days left until election day and candidates are calling all hands on deck to get those votes. the candidates focus on the key swing states that carry a higher number of electoral college votes.

army corps of whether the company building the bakken oil pipeline can re-route a portion of it in north dakota. the president says the move could alleviate some of the concerns of the standing rock sioux tribe. ongoing protests there have threatened the construction of the pipeline. protesters insist the pipeline will threaten drinking water and destroy sacred land. the texas company, dakota access, is building the pipeline from north dakota to illinois, with part of it going through

the urbandale police department. the two officers who died are urbandale police officer justin martin and des moines police sgt. tony beminio. around 1 am yesterday, a man shot and killed officer martin near urbandale high school. just 20 minutes later, a shooter killed took the life of sergeant beminio a few blocks south of merle hay mall. police say this is the man who killed the officers: scott greene, of urbandale. he is 46 years old. he's had previous run- ins with the law, including resisting an officer trying to pat him down for a another man during a confrontatio n in a parking lot. police now say he targeted officers. possible rifle rounds, there is an officer down ... polk county does confirm an officer down police say greene shot and killed officer martin while martin was in his squad car at 70th and aurora in urbandale. minutes later, and two miles to the southeast, police say greene fired into another squad car, killing police sergeant beminio. several hours later, police

suspect. flagging down a d-n-r employee, greene turned himself in on a road in dallas county, west of des moines. investigators took him to a local hospital for treatment. as of this morning, greene appears to still be at the hospital. investigators also began searching greene's urbandale home yesterday. they say a greene had a history of confrontatio ns with police and making racial slurs. family, friends, and co-workers of officer justin martin and sgt. tony beminio all say the sudden in urbandale, people came out to pay their respects for officer justin martin. martin's friends were there as he graduated with a degree in criminal justice from simpson college. they say becoming a urbandale police officer was his dream. yesterday, his former professor read an email martin had sent her shortly after graduating. "

eastern iowa -- as a graduate of iowa city west high school before graduating from simpson college. he then went on to work at the indianola police department and then the des moines police department in 2005. "i was always impressed by him. always impressed by how genuine he was, how he treated everybody the same. " friends say beminio was known as a loving father, a proud member of des moines swat team, and spent time as a school resource officer. officer beminio graduated from iowa city s simpson college. kcrg tv9's jordee kalk spoke to his classmates and former teachers, who say his protective instincts as a football player carried over to his life as a police officer. friends knew officer beminio as tony, the gentle giant. iowa city west classmates say they will never forget how beminio led the 1995 football team to state championships. wymer: 17:42, "the program turned around during their time in high school going

ambush killings of two officers. early yesterday morning we learned someone shot and killed an urbandale officer and a des moines officer. those two are des moines sergeant tony beminio who you see on the right and officer justin martin of the urbandale police department. sergeant beminio had been with the department since 2005 and was married with children. he also graduated from iowa city west high

just joined the urbandale police department last year. he is survived by his parents and siblings. around 1 a-m yesterday, police say someone shot officer martin in his squad car at 70th and aurora in urbandale. then about 20 minutes later, police found sergeant beminio shot in his car at merle hay road and sheridan. about 9 a-m yesterday, scott green turned himself into a d-n-r employee in dallas county. police suspect him of carrying out the killing of those 2 we will be getting that update from investigators in the des moines area during a news conference. that starts at 10 a-m today. governor terry branstad talked about wednesday's police shootings during a campaign stop for other republicans in hiawatha. "our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the police officers. so tragic that they were targeted and shot in their own police cars. and uh, we want to do everything we can. and i'm fortunate that the person they suspect did this has already been captured." this was from the hiawatha g-o-p

yesterday for republican candidates with former new york city mayor rudy giuliani. and president obama also issued his condolences. in a statement, he said, in part, "sergeant anthony beminio and officer justin martin represented our best, most decent instincts as human beings - to serve our neighbors, to put ourselves in harm's way for someone else." iowa is now part of a national uptick in violence against law enforcement. from 2000 to 2015, the "officer down memorial who died in the line of duty. with yesterday's killings, 5 officers have died in iowa just in 2016. nationally, 112 officers have died in the line of duty this year, which is already 6% more than all of last year. 48 of those have been by gunfire, which is - by far - the leading cause. in a tv-9 follow-up this morning.. a dubuque man convicted of killing his grown daughter has a hearing on request for new trial this morning.

unfair. his lawyers say prosecutors shouldn't have been allowed to present stern's initial statements to police -- along with some crime scene photos. stern is awaiting sentencing for the death of his daughter, kimberly stern. the cedar rapids community school district is trying to be more active in stopping students from chronically missing school. the state allows 15 absences a semester. but the district doesn't want students to get anywhere near this many. that's why - after 3 unexcused days a letter - gets sent to parents. a phone calls. at 8, officials will go out to homes to check in on the situation. and finally at 15 the family is sent to linn county district court. the district says this is an informal meeting between itself and the family. tonight at 10, hear how the district "holistic student" approach that works to help these families. now time for our morning mugshot. the theater department at cedar rapids kennedy high school invites you to be their guest at the royal once upon a time fairytale
