while thousands celebrated in chicago, hundreds here celebrated and that came to an end quickly. we have a report now from iowa city. what do we know so far this morning? >> reporter: we've confirmed what eyewitnesses told us just about five, five and a half hours ago whether this happened that a young machine did climb that street lamp you see there. the top bulb is night, about 10 minutes after the cubs clinched the world series title. they said the way it got cracked was the entire body fell from the top, fell on to the concrete. first responders got here very quickly, tried to resuscitate and perform cpr. took him away very swiftly. it all happened so fast. the cubs clinched about 11:50
hours ago. within 10 minutes time, the party here where we were covering all of this and waiting to see the celebrations, they poured out into the street and within 10 minutes, all those celebrations turned into chaos and a very somber, very surreal feeling for the juxtaposition of emotions from absolute jubilation to so many people, just a sense of uneasiness, a lot of scared so many tears. there were people forming prayer circles. a moment that so many people have waited for. so many have grown up as cubs fans and for that moment that people have been waiting more than a century for to all of a sudden come to a screeching halt is a very somber and mixture of emotions. very surreal to see. and now as happy as so many people are around the world
champions finally, for a lot of people in iowa city, it is the last thing on their minds after a young man falls from a street lamp here. we don't mow his name or investigating a shooting near johnson avenue and 32nd street nortwest. police were called to an apartment just before three this morning on reports of shots fired. officers tell cbs 2 news - shell casings were found near the scene and a car was hit. police will only charged in the shooting. they will not confirm whether anyone was hurt. stay with cbs 2 news and we'll keep you updated as the story develops. also breaking this morning a high speed chase has been reported in the corridor. police say it started in north liberty - at around 2-a-m - right now - we don't have many details - but we do know that iowa city, coralville and north liberty police were involved.our news crew saw several different squad cars together around the coral

was driving.minutes later and less than two miles away - beminio was shot at a stop sign.the suspect - scott greene was found and arrested hours later.he was walking down a gravel road in dallas county - which is just west of urbandale.greene flagged down a d-n-r employee and told him to call 9-1-1. as questions remain on just why the shooting happened - more information is coming out about the suspect - scott green. why the more information is coming out about that suspect, scott greene. cbs 2 news reporter stephanie johnson joins us live now at our breaking news desk. explain to us what we know so far about him. >> reporter: what we know about him so far is he is right now in the hospital. he has not been charged as of right now but police have admitted that greene has had several run-ins with police in the area. now, two years ago, he was charged with he refused to be
of threatening to kill a man at his apartment complex and pleaded guilty to harrassment. right now, authorities are looking at a video posted on youtube that could be from greene. a man is seen talk to police about a possible altercation with african-american fans at a high school football game because he was carrying a confederate flag. now, meanwhile, cbs 2 news spoke to some of of the suspect's neighbors. they said he was a quiet and friendly man. >> i not sure what set him off reall" really.""right away it's just like why - why kill an officer - why kill two officers why do really. >> right away, it is just why. why kill an officer? why kill two officers? why do these things? >> reporter: and today, that is the latest we know about the suspect at this time. back to you. >> thank you.
for the des moines area police departments. just months a they lost two other officers in a head-on collision on interstate 80. the officers were transporting a prisoner when a trunk driver hit them going the wrong way down a highway. all four people involved in the cash died. then in august, a we des moines officer died on duty while driving his motorcycle back to the department after testifying in a hit and run case. 114 officers have lost hair far this year. hike we all saw back in april and august for those deadly crashes, the entire state is absolutely outpouring their love and support if our men and women in blue. all throughout the day yesterday, countless people came to leave flowers and balloons or just simply show other police officers that they ran into that they're thankful for their service.

collective heart of the demeanor is with des moines and urbandale this morning. he says this tragedy hits very hard to anyone in the profession. family and friends of a cedar rapids man shot by a crpd office tuesday morning demand answers as their loved one remains in the hospital. police say 37-year-old jeremy mitchell started an argument during a traffic stop. they say the officer fired at mitch whole then tried to get away. he is now hospitalized with serious injuries and friends we need police to release the dash-cam video and also coe college release their cam, their video that they have, because it's not fair that my uncle's now laying in the hospital, most likely hemight be paralyzed, with a breathing tube, for simply getting pulled over. the iowa division of criminal investigation is now handling this case.cedar rapids police tell cbs 2 news - a dashcam

down and he broke the bulb and fell. that is a 20rbg 25 foot-drop. fell on to the pavement. obviously, very badly injured. we don't have an update on his condition. we don't know anything about this kid. we know he is a male. he had friends in the area but they didn't want to talk to us about his condition or anything about him. it was not a great scene and we've talked all morning about so many kids at the university the chicagoland area. it is an event that they've been waiting for and their parents and grandparent have been waiting for to celebrate. at 11:47 last night when kris bryant throws over to anthony rizzo and completes that journey, 108 years to get the world series title, it was a jubilation i've never seen in iowa city. i've covered incredible hawkeye

this is the only thing i know how to help is to feed. i want you guys to be hydrated and not -- i want you to go home to your families because i want my dad to come home to me and i want my friend to come home to me. >> we thought it was important to show you this interaction between this woman and the officer. they're both obviously grieving. both completely unsure of what to do in the situation but what you can see happening in video is proof that community love and kindness, they are all bigger and have a much more impact than any could on our community.
