well, good wednesday morning. i'm reena ninan. >> and i'm phillip mena. we begin with the showdown in vegas. the biggest night so far for the five democrats making a run for the white house. >> hillary clinton and bernie sanders got the most speaking time as they clashed on gun control. the middle east and the economy. the three lesser known contenders struggled for attention but failed to get the breakout moment they were hoping for. >> they refrained from name calling and personal attacks and sanders even claim to clinton's defense firing off what many considered was the best line of the night. >> enough of the e-mails. let's talk about the real issues facing america. >> this was the first of six planned democratic primary debates. >> it gave hillary clinton a chance to show why she is leading the pack and, of course, donald trump chimed in live tweeting blow by blow.
we get the latest from abc's kenneth moton. good morning, kenneth. >> reporter: good morning. hillary clinton was tough last night. she really dominated on that debate stage taking on her four challengers who at times refused to bring the fight to her. round one, the democrats sparring over the issues. hillary clinton feisty, aggressive, defending her record in the senate and as secretary of state. >> i would not ask anyone to vote for me based on my last name. i'd ask them to listen to what i'm proposing. >> reporter: from gun control. >> is bernie sanders tough enough on guns? >> no, not at all. >> it's time to stand up and pass comprehensive gun safety legislation as a nation. >> reporter: to foreign policy. >> the greatest strategic threat that we have right now is resolving our relationship with china. >> reporter: the biggest moment of the night, bernie sanders on clinton's e-mail scandal. >> the american people are sick and tired of hearing about your damn e-mails. >> thank you. me too, me too.

lincoln chafee and jim webb. i will tell you webb complained he didn't get enough time and chafee, well, his attack on hillary clinton in that e-mail scandal didn't do much. it appears donald trump on twitter got more attention than the two candidates on stage. >> seems that way. kenneth, thanks so much. as kenneth mentioned joe biden stayed away from the spotlight last night but he was keeping a close/. >> the vice president still hasn't said if he'll throw his hat in the ring. while the five candidates were battling it out he was watching it on tv from his residence in washington. we asked matthew dowd what the debate means for the vp. >> i think when you take a look at the context of this whole debate the one clear winner i saw was joe biden who wasn't there which is if he was watching this debate or other democrats were watching this debate it would encourage him to get in because what you saw in that debate is still people not ready to take on a general election fight so i thought the clear winner was joe biden. >> that's an interesting take.
the debate dominated social media. bernie sanders was the most mentioned candidate on twitter. >> sanders also gained the most followers on twitter during the debate adding over 28,000. clinton added 10,000 followers, o'malley, 3,000 and webb, 2,000 and by the way, donald trump, well, he gained 60,000 followers during the debate. >> and people were searching for information on key issues. according to google trends here are the top ones. health care, mths, economy, clinton's e-mails and abortion. >> stay with abc news for the latest reactions from last night's democratic debate. full coverage later on "good morning america" including an interview with donald trump. >> well, breaking news overnight from former nba and reality tv star lamar odom being treated at a las vegas hospital after being found unconscious at a brothel. medics were called in when he was found to be unresponsive. he was stabilized and driven to vegas because his 6'10" frame
