>> how live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc7 news. >> good morning, i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, january 31st. let's start with a quick look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning to you, carolyn. live doppler 7hd shows the state divide in half with light rain leaving the north bay right now. the reason why, strong area of low pressure is pushing it to the south. let's take you in to the east bay where you can see a cell here pushing outwait tracy. higher elevation light snow around to mt. hamilton. from morgan hill, highway 101,

scattered light mist and drizzle. we will be left with a very gusty day as this area of low pressure, it's in here with the speckled clouds and pushes through san francisco. that will allow for a breezy, but partly sunny afternoon. temperatures right now in the 50s. we have an outside chance of a shower, especially in the higher elevations. maybe a thunderstorm. we will put it all together for you and talk about the all-important week ahead, including the super bowl. carolyn. thank you, lisa. in new video this morning, the two remaining dangerous escapees from southern california walked be back into the county jail they broke out of nine days ago. john take and nayeri were in shack else as they returned this morning. they were caught yesterday and ending a statewide manhunt. melanie woodrow said a sharp-eyed woman aided in the arrest.

>> three inmates described as extremely dangerous used a makeshift rope out of linens to repel down the orange county men's jail. all three are now back in custody. san francisco police captured hossein nayeri and jonathan tieu saturday morning after a citizen recognized the white van they allegedly stole following their escaped. that person approached officers nearby on an unrelated call. the take-down at stanyan and waller street near golden gate park. >> stop, lay down, hit the ground. get on the ground. he did. larry gray said he watched. as officers approached the van, they said nayeri ran. >> they captured him and got the other one in the truck. >> they found tieu hiding inside the van. >> when we conducted a search of the van we found 380 rounds inside, an ammunition round. we did not locate a weapon at the time. >> the trio were spotted earlier in the week.

that was in san jose. this almeda hotel manager said the men stayed here tuesday and wednesday night, checking out thursday morning. one day later one surrendered to police. the moment captured on video. it's unclear why nayeri or tieu were in san francisco. or where they may have been headed next. >> and how smart they were to stay out-of-sight but there came a time when they could only stay out so long. >> the orange county sheriff said the next up date will be on monday. in san francisco, melanie woodrow, abc7 news. >> see here's the timeline. it all started nine days ago when the fugitives escaped from a jail in orange county by repelling down the side. last sunday investigators said one of the suspects stole a van that the two of them used to drive here to the bay area. tuesday they checked into the almeda motel in san jose. friday police arrested one who

turned himself in, and it all wrapped up yesterday morning with the final two arrests in san francisco. for updates on any major story anytime, just download our abc7 news app and enable push alerts for immediate notifications. super bowl city in san francisco opened yesterday to plenty of fanfare. we had many of our cameras pointed at last night's fantastic fireworks show. now that live look from the visa everywhere cam over super bowl city. it's quiet right now, but there will be huge crowds later on. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana took in the sights and sounds. >> the first night of super bowl city festivities started off with a bang. that show in the sky was the opening act for a show on stage by bay area chris issak. the first headliner of the week-long party leading up to super bowl 50 next weekend. ♪

>> there were some fans who were disappointed at a lack of access to the main stage of the show. for safety reasons the fire marshal shut down entry to a large area right in front of the stage, leaving it pretty sparsely populated. most people had to watch on big screens nearby. down along the embarcadero some of northern california's brightest political stars gathered for a show of their own. three, two, one! [cheers and applause] >> they relit the light project on the bay bridge. the foundation that launched the piece of art donated it to the state of california. >> on behalf of a grateful state, we are honored to be here. thank you all very much. >> the strings of light will now be a permanent part of the bay bridge. for super bowl fans, this is the first opportunity to take in this massive spectacle. >> this is what i had planned,

to check it out, hang out and get excited. >> all the fans said they were excited to see super bowl city but would be even more excited if they had tickets to the super bowl. abc7 news. >> the super bowl teams are coming into town today. peyton manning and the denver broncos are scheduled to get here first, landing approximately 2:30 at the minetta san jose international. then about an hour later the cam newton and the carolina panthers roll in. the panthers are the choice to win super bowl 50. vegas has them as a 6-point favorite and the margin could grow larger as game day gets closer. and more super bowl closers to tell you about. this is a live shot from the city of santa clara webcam. it shows tasmin drive at great america outside levi's stadium. later today tasman will close down until tuesday, february 9th.

lightrail service will continue until the evening commute on friday. bart has ambassadors letting riders know the spear street exit from the embarcadero station is closed. that's the exit that puts you right at market and spear. the spear street exit will be open during the morning commute on weekdays. the weekend closer runs through next sunday. muni also has extra ambassadors on hand directing riders. yesterday muni put up some new signs to help visitors find their way to the super bowl events in san francisco. riders going to the nfl experience should get off at the powell street station. those going to super bowl city, at the embarcadero. if you want get up-close and personal with the vince lombardi nfl trophy, the week long event kicked off at the moscone center. it's the nfl experience.

you see san francisco 49 running back roger craig carrying in the super bowl's top prize. craig says he hopes niners and raiders fans appreciate the week-long celebration. >> this is fun. it's a fun time. and it's great for all the people in the bay area. hope they embrace it well. >> the nfl experience has a lot more that's hands on. you can try your leg in a game-winning field goal attempt. you can attempt a punt and try out the quarterback challenge. tickets are $35 for adults, $25 for kids.

and a super community concert and fireworks show is set for today at mission college in santa clara. it includes a concert by heart, and a food alley. that event starts at 3:00 this afternoon. it seems like the rain has moved on out. >> yeah, but would you believe snow in the south bay? we had snow all morning long. but here, mount you the tam, we have some clouds. partly sunny conditions. the sun will win out but the wind will be with us today and still talking a little bit of shower activity. your forecast is next. >> thank you, lisa. also ahead, going for it all. the super opportunity for homeowners to rent their houses for big bucks to visiting football fans. and no crab, no problem. the local seafood festival being held

in denver a large motorcycle show scheduled for today was cancelled after one person was killed in a shooting. 10,000 people were inside the national western complex when members of two motorcycle clubs got into a fight. police say there were shootings and stabbings. they believe there was more than one gunmen. seven people went to the

hospital and that's where one died. police have not made any arrests, but are talking to a person of interest. this morning santa clara police are warning this teenager is armed and dangerous and a suspected killer. 18-year-old jonah castro is believed to have shot and killed a man in his car friday afternoon. castro is described at 5'3", 115 pounds with brown eyes and black hair. if you see him, you are urged to call 911.police are searching for a man and woman accused of stealing two cars, including a police cruiser. the woman on the left and christian hernandez ran the stolen s.u.v. into a patrol car the officers were trying toa rest them for a series of burglary and car thefts. they got away after stealing a police car and dragging a police officer behind it for several feet. that officer is going to be okay.

police recovered the cruiser about five miles away in san jose. the fbi has warned law enforcement to keep an eye out for someone trying to sneak into super bowl 50 using a stolen agent's id.agent's car early friday morning in venecia. they also took three handguns. there's a $5,000 reward for information lead to be an arrest. be are. >> as crowds sze sended on san francisco yesterday, the police were busy trying to keep a group of protesting from entering. ings. >> about 200 were determined to take their message to super bowl city. >> we are parole test because we represent black and brown lives and because our lives matter. >> protesters say they won't

rest until changes are made, starting with the firing of san francisco's top cop. this all started when a young black man was killed in a heated confrontation with officers last month. police quickly assembled into a line, stopping protesters in their tracks. after what seemed like a long standstill, they were casually escorted to super bowl city. they took pictures and enjoyed the festivities, but still held on to their signs. at one time they made their way on to the stage but quickly got off. it was, by all accounts, a peaceful event that didn't seem to bother nearby super bowl fans. >> we aren't here to tear things up or confront the super bowl, but we are here to stay that these people have to stop this. >> and they did that in a place where they could be heard and seen. in san francisco, janet, abc7 news. fans coming to the bay area for the super bowl are finding some super prices when they look for a place to stay. abc7 news anchor reggie looks at what people are willing to pay

to see their team play. >> try to book a hotel room in the bay area for the super bowl, and you might be shocked at the price. that is if you can even find a place to stay. >> i would venture to say that the week leading up to super bowl the hotels in san francisco will be running 95 to 100% full >> thomas kline is the general manager of the fairmont hotel on knob hill. he said rooms across the bay area are expensive. many hotels are charging as much as six times their normal rate. >> we are starting off at $1,500 for the regular rooms. suites go up to $10,000 a night. and we have a four-day minimum that we require. >> kline said the price reflects the demand. >> this is certainly not the norm and nobody i have spoken to say we going to go out of the market and price gouge. >> many visitors are looking at a house to rent. there are more than 6,000

listings available across the area with the super bowl weekend. with the number of searches up 125% over average. >> we've got places that rent for $150 a night the on home away that you can stay in and you can book today. we've got places that rent for $10,000 a night for that weekend. >> home away is the world's largest marketplace for renting homes. >> you think about the combination of the 50th super bowl, in the bay area, at a brand new stadium. beyoncé and cold play with the music. i don't think the stars would align for a more epic event than that. >> that's translating into epic demand for home rentals. >> this is our formal living room. >> especially in the south bay. >> i don't have to rent it out, but it's well worth it for someone if they are going to really do it right and do the super bowl right. this is the place to stay. >> she's hoping to rent her four bedroom home near levi's stadium for $20,000 a night with a

four-night minimum. she's already getting calls. and if she does rent the house, she knows what she'll do with the money. >> our daughter is getting married in may. to a wonderful young man, and we would love to help rent the house to help pay for the wedding. >> she said she'll also donate some to charity and spend some on a super bowl week get away in hawaii. abc7 news. >> ab be aware of some of those horror stories, right? >> exactly. a very strong frontal system is pushing into central and southern california with very gusty winds. the bay area, not even the bay area on the northern edge. a few light to showers in the south bay. we will get into the wind as well. the area of low pressure and wind will push the storm system to to the south throughout the day. the rain will be ending in the south bay soon. take a look, this is the cold air cumulus that will be pushing over the bay area, destabilizing

the atmosphere. you get a little son and you will see some sun in the area. and you could see a thunderstorm in the higher elevations. this is the snow. mt. hamilton at 4200 feet. the snow levels continue to drop to about 2500 feet. cold system in place. highway 1301, gilroy looking at some showers. take look at it here. just getting hammered at the bottom of your screen with winds up to 30 miles per hour. some very rainy times to the south but in the sierra nevada a winter weather advisory right through 4:00 in the morning tomorrow. it is snowing currently, and we are still looking at accumulation right on through tomorrow with a foot above 7,000 feet. and about 7 inches kirkwood. of the resorts 8 inches. tahoe city. doing just fine. but mother nature taking a break after today. look at the golden gate bridge. sunny skies and the winds will continue to be a factor. most areas have switched over to the north and not yet san jose. 47 there.

50 half moon bay. the numbers have been dropping. it's been getting cooler. it's going to be a blustery day. emeryville looking quite pretty. it's going to be a chilly afternoon. 24 hour temperaturing change, yes, anywhere from 4 to 6 degrees colder this morning. the winds aren't bad right now, but south of the golden gate it will be turning breezy this afternoon, a chance of a thunderstorm and higher elevations. very gusty winds. you will see on our next animation how it just pushes over the bay area throughout the afternoon and evening hours. we are starting out this morning. you see the winds offshore. then look what happens after 2:00. the gusty winds push right over the bay, 30 miles per hour. maybe 40 miles per hour through oakland and the overnight hours. we could see some power outages. the breezy winds, the diablo range could see some showers

there, but overall every other day looking at some very, very light rain for the week ahead. in fact, if we go 7 days out, this is seven days and look how much rain we are expecting. not much. that includes a dry super bowl weekend next weekend. 55 san jose with the wind and sun. the facing weather seven-day forecast, our groundhog might get his hit head on tuesday. then sunshine. it will get milder and it will feel like spring by the time the super bowl is here. >> so last day of the month and thousand did we do on the rain total necessary. >> very good. almost at 100% or better everywhere. >> sounds good. thank you, lisa.

the bay area this week >> a long-time southbound homeowner will have a completely remodeled place to host his super bowl party. abc7 news was in sunnyvale 60 volunteers, including some of the san francisco 49ers worked on a place ronny richardson has called home for 57 years. the group "rebuilding together peninsula" provides free repairs for low income homeowners. richardson's wife passed away and he's struggled to maintain his home on his own. >> it's a great bunch of people that come here and they do volunteer work, yes. and i'm pleased with it. i wish the whole world was filled up with people like that. >> the house should be ready for him to move back in next friday, just in time to host a super bowl party. a lack of dungeonnous crab did not stop organizers from throwing a crab festival and celebrating the crab in half moon bay. it was the seafood festival yesterday.

organizers changed the name from the half moon bay crab festival back in november after state environmental officials suspended crab fishing because of toxic algae blooms. >> it hasn't been a good season. i think for the rest of the community this is a really good event. it shows we care about the ocean and everything that's going on with it right now. >> so instead of crab, there was wine. local beer, food demonstrations on sustainable seafood, local artists and a lot for kids to do. >> much more ahead on the abc7 sunday morning news. not know super. why homeless advocates are planning to protest in san francisco this week. >> only one more day left for the

>> welcome back. we are starting this half-hour with a look at our weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning. , good morning. plenty going on around the state but not where we are. you see the moisture plume to the south of us. northern california just on the edge. we see some showers as far north as almeda county. but higher elevation snow, we've had snow from to mt. hamilton, the hills of morgan hill, and you see down through 101 we have some wet weather. this will wrap up within the next hour or two and the focus shifts to the central coast, the south bay, and the sierra snow keeps coming down right through tomorrow. a wind advisory later and it will look warmer than a feels. >> thank you, lisa. time for politics.

the iowa caucus begins tomorrow night, and this weekend candidates are going all out to get out the vote. abc news reporter lana zach joins us live from des moines, iowa. good morning. >> good morning, carolyn. the weather is expected to be fine here tomorrow night when iowans will head to their caucuses and that could help a candidate who has many first-time voters. ♪ ♪ this land is your land this land is my land ♪ >> could the insurgent candidates actually walk away with a win in iowa? >> what the pundits say, they you know, young people come out to rallies, but you know what? they aren't going to come out to participate in the caucus. so how would you like to make the pundits look dumb on election day? >> an energetic bernie sanders played to his largest crowd yet. the last major poll before the iowan caucuses has sanders within three points of hillary

talks on wednesday with muslim leaders at the islamic society of baltimore. according to the white house, president obama will reiterate the importance of staying true to the nation's core values. he said including speaking out against bigotry and protecting religious freedom. >> a reminder, covered california has extended the deadline for people who have started the application process before midnight tonight. officials have extended the deadline today because of a surge of applications on friday. but consumers must begin the process online by tonight or make an appointment with a certified covered california representative. they will then have until february 6th to complete that process. >> this week next to super bowl city, san francisco homeless advocates plan to erect their own city. this because of money being spent on super bowl festivities rather than housing while more and more homeless are living in

tense. >> it's hard to ignore the proliferation of tents in the public spaces in san francisco. like this one. she said she's had more company here in recent weeks. >> they pushed everybody out of downtown for the super bowl. >> but supervisor scott wiener said the tent population began increasing long before the super bowl preparations. and he doesn't want san francisco people to become used to they will. he's written a letter to city department heads asking what the strategy is to deal with the crisis, and about plans to expand shelter access. >> i do not say in this letter we should go in and bulldoze all the tents tomorrow. the goal is to have enough shelter capacity so people can come in out of the tents, off the streets. >> those we talked to said it's the difficult to get into the shelters. >> i mean, i can stay on the

gusty winds for the events down there, up to 40 miles per hour. today notice the cloud cover sinks south but the wind replace it is and we will see some sunshine. here's where we could see some of the shower activity. the higher elevations, the hills there. looking at some very weak rain maybe on tuesday, and then it's been taken out of the forecast for the rest of the week into the next weekend. super bowl weekend. this is our rainfall projection for the next several days. really not much at all. in fact, it could change between now and then. just to let you know, we're not expecting much at all. 55 in richmond and vallejo, santa cruz and palo alto. windy along the coast. breezy elsewhere and the seven-day forecast it will be sunny and still cool tomorrow. the groundhog may get his head wet on tuesday. that should be it for the rain. maybe a north bay shower late thursday and into super bowl sunday it's looking sunny and mild. we will be the envy of the world, right? >> yeah. i know you have a degree in all that kind of city, but i'm really going to be looking to
