brinstein will discuss the role the center will play in returning astronauts to the moon within the next five years. last night the vp landed with his wife, karen, at monterey regional airport before heading to moffettodl take place in the nasa vertical motion simulator. it's a facility that will be an important part in developing a lander needed for the artemis program, which will land the first woman and next man on the moon by 2024. pence will deliver remarks to nasa employees around 11:45 later this morning. david louie will be covering that for us. lauren martinez, abc7 news. >> thanks. and the second lady, karen pence, will be in alameda. she's visiting military spouses at coast guard island. she is bringing attention to the sacrifices family members make and how that contributes to the strength of our coast guard. that visit is set to happen at
10:00. at the live desk, a big step ha ms sg ovy kied 22 pe walmart where the sh happened reopens today. since the shooting, walmart has hired extra security guards at its other el paso stores. store managers have been helping employees to work through the tragedy. >> giving a sense of hope at the end of this tragic event that happened, that they can get back to some sort of normal life. >> the accused gunman pleaded not guilty to murder in october. police say he targeted mexicans and posted a white supremacist manifesto online before the attack. >> thanks. autopsy and toxicology tests are scheduled today for the first person in the bay area to die from complications related to e-cigarette use. amanda arconti died friday.
she spent a lot of time with family in novato. >> we know that in talking with. had been aware of some of the communications about the harm of vaping and tried to quit herself. >> an exact cause of death will be determined after today's exams. the cdc identified vitamin e acetate as a possible cause to vaping related illnesses. it's been 25 years since the death of san francisco police officer james gelf. there was a vigil for him at pine and franklin last night. officer gelf's death changed the way the department arms itself. a man wearing body armor shot gelf with his semiautomatic weapon in 1984. it was no match against the officer's six-match revolver. we are getting a new perspective of that brush fire that burned near the calamari
time academy. the vallejo firefighters associasoe association showed this video. we have a closer look at how firefighters saw it on the ground. >> reporter: this security video shows four different angles of the flames around a home. sky 7 shows what the area looked like from above. this home is located east and up the hill from the maritime acade academy. flames were encroaching on two sides of the house when firefighters arrived. less than half a minute later they're pulling the hose off the truck. but within a minute smoke starts to surround the home and cameras, embers flying everywhere. flames come even closer to the patio burning over the wall. from another viewpoint you can see firefighters are still there trying to get it under control. as the smoke starts to clear you can see one firefighter come across that porch. what may be surprising, how much
didn't burn. the patio wall and some furniture still intact. here you can see a firefighter on the roof of the truck spraying water on the home. they also appear to go in more later with more hose. >> the house was relatively unscathed except for some broken windows and a scorched gutter. one building at the maritime academy was destroyed. lagunitas will host a fund-raiser today to help people of the kincade fire. this will be at the brewery's tap room in petaluma. the event runs from 4:00 to 9:00. all proceeds will go to a non-profit organization that helps first re spond sponders. some melanie martinez fans are upset after she canceled her concert. one fan said they got notice ten

some records are in the upper 70s this weekend. there's some inland neighborhoods that will be in the upper 70s to near 80. for today, no, just mid to upper 60s inland. low to mid 60s around the bay. low 60s around the coast. you see some green splotches around, that's the rain that will fall. notice what we do have, a little bit of an onshore breeze. look how intense it gets during the afternoon hours that will keep our temperatures below average also. it's going to be breezy compared to what we've been dealing with most of the week under that settling influence of high pressure. tonight, look at the cloud cover. mid 40s to mid 50s. another mild morning. we have clouds more dominant for saturday, sunday. we'll see if there's any rain coming up. transit is a key part of building a better bay area. getting from "a" to b has gotten
increasingly difficult in san francisco. >> the city has a new transportation director and he is hoping to change that. mayor london breed introduced jeffrey tumblin yesterday as the new head of sfmta. first on his agenda is getting feedback from his staff. >> it's my job first to listen and then secondly and more importantly to remove obstacles so they can do their good and productive work. >> he has promised to improve the overall quality of service. he acknowledged that muni buses need repairs, construction projects are behind askscheduled there's a severe lack of parking in the city. it was an adorable day in the neighborhood. why a bunch of babies got dressed up in cardigans. and will it be colin kaepernick's comeback or is this a publicity stunt? the teams that are apparently interested in the former 49ers quarterback. is your side gig a business or a hobby? i'm michael finney. this is a 7 on your side quick

investigation. >> u.s. ambassador to ukraine bill tar lore said president trump ordered 4$400 million of military aid be withheld from ukraine. taylor says on july 26th, one day after the president's controversial call with ukraine's president, his staffer overheard trump asking u.s. ambassador to the eu gordon sondland over the phone about, quote, the investigations. >> the member of my staff asked ambassador sondland what president trump thought about ukraine. ambassador sondland said president trump cares more about the investigations of biden. >> reporter: president trump says he doesn't remember the conversation. >> i know nothing about that. first time i've heard it. >> republicans at the hearing defending the president noting that taylor and kent were relying solely on second-hand information. i'm elizabeth hur for abc7 news.
>> thanks. the impeachment hearings resume tomorrow and abcar hemli. the coverage starts at 6:00 a.m. on abc7. happening today, an attorney is expected to file a lawsuit against b.a.r.t. after an officer detained a man eating a sandwich on a station platform. >> he said b.a.r.t. officers engaged in racial profiling. >> amy hollyfield is live at the pleasant hill b.a.r.t. station where this all happened. good morning, amy. >> we are not hearing shock that this happened, but we are hearing people say they wish police would focus on bigger issues than eating. a b.a.r.t. police officer approaching steve foster on the platform at the pleasant hill b.a.r.t. station. he told him he should not be eating his sandwich. it's not allowed on b.a.r.t. the officer ended up handcuffing foster who was eventually released. foster is suing. he's accusing the officer of
racial profiling. >> i probably would, too, honestly. i would, too, honestly, because it's kind of messed up. there's bums on here that hop on b.a.r.t. they're eating. they stink. our guy was just eating. enjoying his day. wasn't bothering nobody. going on with his day. cops can bother them. >> reporter: the man eating the sandwich, foster, admits to yelling obscenities and homophobic slurs. the officer said foster would not give his name or show his i.d. the b.a.r.t. general manager apologized to foster. and a protest is scheduled for this saturday. organizers are asking riders to eat sandwiches on b.a.r.t. reporting live from the pleasant hill b.a.r.t. station, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. oakland is dropping a lawsuit against alameda county over the oakland coliseum complex.
the city has been trying t the team wants to redevelop that land. oakland can now consider selling its half of the coliseum complex to the a's. more chaos the a he>> about sch closures disrupted and then took over the meeting. >> no more closures! >> many parents and teachers are upset about the closure and consolidation of several schools due to declining enrollment. the board president tried to keep order but then the entire room turned its back on the ske school board. at the october 23rd meeting protesters clashed with police inside the meeting room after protesters jumped over a barricade separating them from the school board and arrests were made at that meeting. one parent was hurt that night. she says she wants the district to stop spending money on its police force.
>> that could be used to save our public schools and keep them open, which is all we're asking for, let our children have their public education. >> the board were forced to leave the meeting room and continue their meeting in an upstairs room, no public allowed, only a video camera. then students took their places at the meeting. protest say they will be back for the next school board meeting in december. growing outrage over a deadly shooting in vallejo involving an off-duty police officer. today the victim's family is expected to speak. their attorney says they are demanding answers and they want body camera video to be released. eric reason died sunday night. police sergeant virgil thomas shot him over an argument about a parking space. the "mercury news" was told reason confronted the sergeant with a gun he said. the attorney for the victim's family questions whether the responding officers followed protocol. she shared this photo which appears to show the sergeant taking photos or video the at crime scene. new developments in the murder of a tech millionaire. we're getting our first look at the suspects. the santa cruz sheriff's office
