((denise valdez)) is it real? or is it a scam? and how can you know for
8 on your side consumer advocate michelle mortensen is here with tonight's money matters report. ((michelle mortensen)) > debt collectors are notoriously disliked people. in fact ... the government gets more complaints about them ... than any other industry. and there are a few bad apples. just 2 months ago .. the f-t-c busted several for breaking the law and more than 100 debt collection companies have been banned from the industry. so how can you tell the good from the bad? i'm going to tell you how. first ... when they call you --- demand to know what company they represent. you have every right to know what debt you owe. and by law .. they need to notify you in writing the details of the debt.... within 30 days. next ... pull up your credit report .. and see if the debt is listed. if it is .. call the company to verify how much the debt is for ... how old it is ... and confirm it was sold to a collection agency. if everything is adding up ... you likely owe the debt .. and can work out a payment plan or settlement.
don't be bullied. this could be a fake debt call ... or a call on a debt you've already paid. once you prove you don't owe it ... case closed.... you can report these bad debt collectors to the f-t-c .. and to the state. i'll have links for you online to do just that. and get this .. regardless of whether you owe a debt or not ... a debt collector can not harrass you. it's the law. here's the details. they can't use the phone to annoy you .. threaten to harm you ... or arrest you .. or use abusive or profane language. if they do -- you can report them to the f-t-c. ((michelle mortensen)) you can even send debt collectors a certified letter requesting they stop calling you. once they get it -- they have to stop ... or they can be reported to the f-t-c. and the f-t-c does take action. just realize this letter won't eliminate the debt -- just the calls. ... and since it is monday ... don't forget .. the latest edition of michelles daily deals, coupons and freebies.
i even have valentines day candy coupons for il morso ... if you want to shop early. ((dave courvoisier)) michelle... before you go ... there's a story making headlines today about gender pricing .. how women pay more for items than men. you actually broke this story months ago. ((michelle mortensen)) i did. it's making news today .. because the new york city department of consumer affairs released a study on the topic. their study showed on average women pay about 42% more for things like dry cleaning ... deodorant .. and razors. when i went shopping and exposed the price differences ... they were pretty drastic. back in july when i did the story ... women's degree antipersetrant was 7.39 while the men's scent was just 3.99. on average i found women pay about 14 hundred bucks more a year for the products they use. studies like these are great for educating consumers ... but they do little to change things. new york, california and miami dade county do have laws against gender pricing ... but it still happens there. and companies have every right to charge whatever they want for aproduct they sell. so the real key to saving money
use my coupons ... and the tools i offer up to you every day to save. ((denise valdez)) > cities across the east coast struggle to dig out of all the snow a record- breaking storm dumped on them over the weekend. the storm is being blamed for 36- deaths. in the nation's capitol... bulldozers are being used to clear paths through about two feet of snow. government offices and schools remained closed today. further north in new york city... the mayor told people to leave their cars parked all week... just to keep congestion off the dangerous roads. more than 12,000 flights were cancelled over the weekend. here in las vegas... things are getting back to normal... though there are still several canceled flights heading for the east coast.///
