they tell us it appears one driver was supposed to yield and did not... and the cars smashed into each other. one person was pronounced dead on the scene... the other has been transported to the hospital with a skull fracture and internal bleeding. those injuries are considered life- threatening. ((denise valdez)) police will keep the road closed for another two hours... so you're encouraged to avoid the area./// ((dave courvoisier)) > new details are coming out tonight after an officer involved shooting that shut down the las vegas strip on friday. ((denise valdez)) police took a man into custody after they say he was pointing a gun at people. the suspect didn't fire any shots, but a metro officer did -- grazing a child and shooting through another person's clothing. ((dave courvoisier)) there was some initial mystery about the suspect's identity... but tonight we know who he is. patranya is live outside the clark county detention center where he's being held. patranya? ((patranya bhoolsuwan)) the suspect has been identified as 20-year-old kahleal black. he's currently in custody here at ccdc. at the time of his arrest, metro referred to him only as a john doe...
identifying him. now, we know who he is... and the officer who fired those shots. ((patranya bhoolsuwan)) today, we went to an address listed for black. our knocks at the door went unanswered although there were people inside. as for information about him... we don't know much. we couldn't find a criminal history or online profiles that might shed light on friday's incident. as for the officer, police say it was 45 year old george smith with metro's tourist safety division who fired the shot on the sidewalks near the bellagio fountains on friday night. this as authorities were trying to get to black who they say was walking around waving what appeared to be a gun at people on the strip. in the moments leading to the arrest, officer smith, fired the shot that grazed a child and went through another man's clothing. the child's injuries were not major -- and they were released from u-m-c that night. we talked to a woman, who told
while working nearby that night: ((marie rios/busker: "i thought saw police throw a man to the ground. they had him in handcuffs and they were trying to search for a weapon. patranya: "were you scared?" marie rios/busker: "(nods)) ((patranya bhoolsuwan)) maria rios is a busker who was working just steps away from where police took black into custody. aside from the child who was hit in the shooting and rushed to u-m-c, no one else was hurt. ((patranya bhoolsuwan)) officer smith, a 10 year veteran with the police force, is now on routine paid administrative leave pending this investigation. as for black he's facing a number of charges including assault with a deadly weapon and possession of stolen property -- it's not clear what that might have been. we requested black's arrest report from the d-a's office today and did not get a response. metro is holding a press conference at 9:30 tomorrow morning to shed more information on this case. reporting from downtown las vegas, patranya bhoolsuwan 8 news now. ((dave courvoisier)) 8 news now's vanessa murphy joining us now in the studio... she's learned that the alleged victim may have been particularly vulnerable and close to this teacher. vanessa? ((vanessa murphy)) school police told me the teacher was arrested ten days ago on school property at valley high school
student. here's what captain ken young of the clark county school district school tells us: school police received information from another agency that jillian lafave....she's 25 years old....may have been having an inappropriate relationship with a student. what you're looking at now is what appears to be her facebook page.... police investigated the allegations and arrested lafave on january 15th. she is still listed on the valley high school website as a special education teacher... meaning she would work with children with intellectual disabilities. we've learned her father teaches there, too. we have been referred to a facebook page of the alleged victim....which shows a photo of the teacher and student together. in this picture, the student referred to the teacher as "mom". ((vanessa murphy)) according to a spokesperson from the clark county school district, lafave is at home with pay pending the investigation. we went to an address on record for lafave this evening, but could not make access to the home to ask questions.
any other information about lafave? her background? ((vanessa murphy)) dave, we had access to her facebook page, but over the past few hours, it's been changed to private... but it did list that she is married and is from texas. i've tried reaching out to her online as well, but have not received a response. ((denise valdez)) and do we know if parents at the school were informed of her arrest? ((vanessa murphy)) we don't know the answer to that yet... we're hoping to follow up with the school district tomorrow./// ((denise valdez)) > this is just the latest incident in what is a shocking list of allegations against school district employees in the past year. in april, jeremiah mazo was accused of inappropriately touching numerous children at hayden elementary in north las he was sentenced to 15 to 60 years in prison in december. that same month, mikhail lerma, a teacher at cashman middle school was arrested on charges of touching a student. there was a third incident that april... substitute teacher kelly hoffman was arrested for sexual assault
bus driver michael banco was arrested in may... and accused of sex crimes against children. police say cameras on the bus caught him assaulting a three year-old. in june, former rancho high school teacher jason lofthouse was arrested after police say he took a teen to hotel rooms for sex on multiple occasions. on the first week of school in august, a special needs teacher -- james doran -- was arrested and accused of throwing a student. also on the first week of school, teacher's aide charles young was arrested for luring a teenage boy for sex. in october, southern highlands prep academy employee ryne brinks was arrested on charges of luring a child. then in december, veterans tribute career and tech academy teacher kristy yegge was arrested on accusations of sex acts with a student... and michael skelton, a janitor at dondero elementary was arrested on accusations of committing sex acts in a classroom./// ((dave courvoisier)) > digging out from this weekend's deadly blizzard will take days and maybe longer, tedd.
