this is a live look at las vegas boulevard near flamingo. police say a billboard truck overturned... and is blocking the northbound lanes. the driver was taken to umc trauma... but the injuries are not life threatening./// ((dave courvoisier)) > a battle is brewing between apple and the government that could have implications for millions of smartphone users. ((paula francis)) the f-b-i is pressuring apple to help them hack into a terrorist's i- phone.. looking for contacts and leads.. 8 news now's mauricio marin has been looking into the issue and joins us with what's at stake for iphone users. ((mauricio marin)) it's something many iphone users do every day. type in their password to unlock their phone. but now a judge is ordering apple to essentially create a master key to allow them to get into the phone of a suspected shooter in the san bernardino mass shooting. apple leaders don't plan to comply. but some cyber security companies are already getting ahead of the game to provide it's way. (( justin shiroff/attorney: "apple has not unlocked the encryption on it's users phones and that's intentional. under the worst case scenario apple was hacked it's users would still be secure." )) ((mauricio marin)) even though some like dubiel feel her privacy should be protected. she understands why the f-b-i would want to access the sensitive information. (( ruth dubiel/iphone user: "there's always two sides to a story isn't there, i can see in that case but where do you draw the line?" )) ((mauricio marin)) for some cyber security companies like hypr biometrics...the y're seeing demand surge for more protection online.

government back door like this it makes a really big challenge for national security because it's impossible to ensure it's always in the right hands.' )) ((mauricio marin)) hypr provides biometric encryption to keep hackers from stealing information on a smartphone by using a person's fingerprint, facial and voice recognition. as for dubiel...she's going to pay close attention of what comes from this battle to see how her data privacy could be affected. 23-year-old javier righetti is convicted of capital murder in the death of alyssa otremba. she was raped... tortured... and murdered while walking home from school in september of 2011. righetti admitted to stabbing otremba dozens of times before burning her body... and told police he did it to prove he was tough. next month... a jury will decide whether righetti will face the death penalty./// ((dave courvoisier)) > metro k9 nicky continues on the road to recovery after he was injured by a suspect. vanessa murphy has the story. against a suspect with a machete last thursday night during a barricade situation. sergeant kerns sent the dog in after warning the suspect... and nicky helped take him down....but then kerns saw blood and realized nikki was hurt. ((sgt. eric kerns/metro police: that's what he does. we do this everyday all day, he's done thousands of searches like this. unfortunately, you know this time he was injured but the vast majority of our searches there is no injury to our dogs. we're very careful with him. )) ((vanessa murphy)) nicky is expected to be back to work in three weeks. they're just waiting for his stitches to heal. vanessa murphy, 8 news now.// ((paula francis)) > for many people... pets are members of the family. and now one local woman needs your help.. after her beloved pet was apparently snatched. a security camera captured footage of the last time the small dog was seen. 8 news now reporter brittany edney joins us now with more on what happened. brittany. her chichuahua.. luci-lu. in the aera of sahara and buffalo.. ... she says she let her outside last thurday for a quick bathroom break... and moments later-- little luci was gone (("when i went back, i opened the door and she wasn't there so i started going out to the curb and calling for her and looking all around.")) and owner lori reed says this video shows the moment luci-lu was snagged. you can see a man walking away with luci in his arms. then moments later, he meets up with a woman as they drive away in an s-u-v. (("i felt completely violated, i was exposed, i was completely wondering why would anybody want to get my dog." )) the 5-year-old black chihuahua mix is microchipped and was last wearing a pink collar with a name tag. her owner says, she's not worried about how she disappeared...on ly that she returns. (("she my dog, i mean we have a physic connection, you know, i

(("she's always like, right by my side, because i'm her emotional support human.")) and now lori is looking for support from the community ((brittany edney)) lori has filed a police report... i spoke with metro... they say that detectives are on the case and their first priorty is to connect with the owner of the s-u-v to see if they can locate luci. they also mentioned, that the two individuals might not have taken the little dog on purpose... so hopefully they can connect and return her home safely. ((paula francis)) so how long has the dog been missing and what else has the family done to try to find luci? ((brittany edney)) well she went missing a week ago... and the owners have contacted social media posts.

state treasurers office is auctioning off hundreds of items

((dave courvoisier)) and this year's auction is attracting a worldwide audience. 8 news now anchor paul joncich is here with a look at some of the items up for bid ((paul joncich)) there are some eye popping items this year. we're talking unclaimed property from safe deposit boxes. rare coins, old currency....and fine jewelry. the treasurers office auctions this stuff off after it goes unclaimed for three years...and the banks can't track down the owners. ((trk)) ((paul joncich)) a spectacular silver tea set.. custom made turquoise and tiffany jewelry.... rare coins and currency. ((wide shot of table)) these are just a few of the items for sale. for the first time, the nevada treasurers office is running it's auction of unclaimed property on- line. at "tnt auction.com. most of this stuff comes from safe deposit boxes who's owners have been unreachable for at least three years. so far, the items fetching the highest bids are fistfulls of gold and silver coins. but this looks like something with a las vegas story. a gold plated lighter with an inscription. it says "to kenny, gratefully, jerry lewis." with scott pelley. >> pelley: this is our western edition. the war on terror and the right to privacy have collided tonight. the f.b.i. got a court order requiring apple to help investigators hack the iphone of one of the terrorists behind the san bernardino massacre. but the head of apple is refusing the order. with more on this, we have jeff jeff. >> reporter: scott, tonight, a top industry official tells cbs news that apple could, theoretically, write software to comply with the judge's order, though it has never been done before. but apple says it is ready to appeal this ruling and take the fight all the way to the supreme court. within hours of the ruling, apple's c.e.o. tim cook called the demand "chilling" and said that it could lead to the tech giant being forced to "build surveillance software to intercept your messages," or even access your phone's microphone or camera withoutcr your knowledge.
