two deadly shootings in 2 different parts of town. both happening within minutes of each other.. but we are hearing they're not connected. good evening, i'm dave courvoisier ((denise valdez)) ...and i'm denise valdez. >> the first shooting took place on north circle which is near paradise and twain.. the second shooting happened on lake mead boulevard near martin luther king.. ((denise valdez)) >> and that's where we find nia wong.. ((dave courvoisier)) >> nia, tell us what's going on... ((nia wong)) metro says the details are "sketchy." right now they can't tell us young man lost his life tonight. >> officers responded to at least one gunshot fired in a parking lot next the west las vegas library. by the time they arrived....the found a black male with a gunshot wound in the chest next to a vehicle in this lot. he's described to be in his late teens, early twenties and was transported to umc where he was declared dead around 8-20. homicide detectives are on scene interviewing three witnesses who were here at the time of the shooting. no suspect has been caught but metro says with the preliminary details they've gotten so far....they believe he's a tall, black male who was seen running

8 news now's mauricio marin has the story of one person's heroic actions to try and save her. ((mauricio marin)) wreckage from a deadly car crash lay scattered on boulder highway at russell most of thursday evening. ((shaela napoli/helped victim in crash: "we heard screeching tires and we turned and we looked and saw the suv and actually hits the car." )) ((mauricio marin)) shaela napoli says the loud bang from the cars colliding startled her at first. but that didn't stop the former nurse from rushing to help. ((shaela napoli/helped victim in crash: "i immediately in the suv on my way to the van." )) ((mauricio marin)) eric eagelton who runs a smog check-station right next to where the crash happened...saw it all unfold. ((eric eageleton/witenss: "boom it just stopped everything everybody stopped. there were about 10 or 15 people in the area and they ran to the red van." )) ((mauricio marin)) napoli says she found the driver of the red van---an elderly man---dazed. he told napoli his wife was in the passenger side of the car---her name was maxine. and i was praying that the ambulance or paramedics would make it there." )) ((mauricio marin)) napoli worked to comfort the two---and even performed c-p-r as others came to help on scene until first responders could arrive. ((shaela napoli/helped victim in crash: "i just kept telling her maxine i'm here we're with you. nick is here. your husband is with you." )) ((mauricio marin)) metro police say the passenger in the van later died at the hospital. (( shaela napoli/helped victim in crash: "we don't like losing anybody.")) ((mauricio marin)) napoli carries a heavy heart. but says she wouldn't hesitate to do it again if she had to. ((shaela napoli/helped victim in crash: "i wanted to make sure h ((dave courvoisier)) >> that was mauricio marin reporting. the crash also caused a brief black out in the area when the red van hit an electric box. as far as the victim---the coroner's office will officially release her name once their investigation wraps up./// ((denise valdez)) the fifth largest school district is one step closer to being broken apart. the state board of education voted unanimously to reorganize the clark county school system. it's the second of three major
and decision making away from the a central district and hand it over to principals, teachers and parents. basically... each ccsd school will be it's own precinct. some trustees fear it will divide the valley in to have and have not's. but advocates claim money will be dolled out through a formula -- which ends up giving more to those who need it most: ((linda young: "you tie in the monies to achievement you'll find that minority communities don't always get the money that they need to help educate students appropriately michael roberson: "so students e.l.l .. students on free and reduced needs or disabilities they will receive more money per pupil than other schools. " )) ((denise valdez)) >> with the help of teachers and parents, principals will decide on the budget, instruction and staffing. that will be a major learning curve -- which the administration promises to help with. a final vote is set for next week... and if that's approved... the proposal is expected to become law for the 2018- 2019
a jury sentenced michael solid to life in prison with the possibility of parole. solid killed marcos arenas in 2013 while trying to steal the victim's ipad. solid made an emotional plea to the jury for leniency. (((michael solid - convicted of murder: im begging you guys to look pass, look pass what i've been portrayed as to really consider giving me a second chance in life. i'm begging you. it's not easy. )) hour to come to an agreement on a punishment. the courtroom was quiet while the clerk read the verdict out loud. after court was dismissed, solid shook his attorney's hands and was escorted out of the courtroom. the victim's family stayed behind and waited for the jurors to be dismissed in order to thank them. the life sentence is only for the first degree murder charge../// ((dave courvoisier)) nearly 5 years ago...a
hadn't been delivered to their community for a week. tonight they reached out to us again not because of missing mail but now because of a missing mailbox. 8 news now reporter nia wong has the story. it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize what's missing in this neighborhood near mountain's edge. ((derek bellow/mailbox stolen: (dad: where was our mailbox?) (daughter: right there) )) derek bellow says after mail had gone undelivered for four days...he couldn't believe the response his wife received when she alerted a local post office on thursday. ((derek bellow: "when she went to the post office, ....the management she spoke mailbox has been gone since saturday late afternoon..." )) neighbors believe their mailbox was stolen sometime last week....leaving them wondering who might be combing through their information. bill dugakti says this westridge post offce initially told him residents would have to travel several miles to their russell
((bill dugatkin/mailbox stolen: "it's inconvenient to get up there on a daily basis and frankly no matter what time a day, there's usually a line that's between a half an hour and an hour, so we're talking about this being a major daily project to get up there and get your mail.")) ((nia wong : " the westridge branch didn't have an exact date on when this mailbox was going to arrive but when we called the communications office, we got an answer within the hour.")) usps spokesman david rupert apologized in this statement given to 8 news now. he says they're aware of the situation and that neighbors could expect a new mailbox in saturday. the united states postal inspection service is now investigating this theft. ((bill dugatkin/mailbox stolen: "i think the mail is something that you take for granted and maybe we shouldn't." )) the usps shared the following tips to prevent mail theft: they say to promptly remove mail from your mailbox after a delivery. request a mail hold from a local post office if you can't pick up your mail for an extended period of time. and if you don't get your expected mail....to contact them immediately. walmart is cutting seven-thousand positions. the retail giant says the jobs in question concern accounting and invoice positions at stores across the united states. the cuts are being made as walmart introduces a more modernized system for store bookkeeping and inventory tracking. company officials say those affected by the job cuts will have the option of working in other roles for walmart./// ((dave courvoisier)) hurricane hermine has started its assault on florida. and it's hotter today than yesterday with triple-digits around the region. well but still remain below windy criteria. we still are dry with single digit humidity readings. and we're a few degrees warmer than yesterday. ................................ .. afternoon highs hot around the valley with temps hottest over to the east side of town where we're lower in elevation. especially for the east and southeast neigbhorhoods. not-as-hot for the locales on the west side of town especially the foothills and certainly the mountains where it appears to be coolest. ................................
and death valley. although we definitely got hotter for the colorado river valley from mesquite all the way down to the searchlight. more tolerable temps in the 90's for the central great basin where they also had some wind develop too. ................................ ... ..... u.s. temps show get stay hot only in the desert southwest but the southern plains with feels like temps in the 100's. still hot also for the northern plains and the mid-atlantic states with muggy conditions there down to the deep south. .. ............................. .... .......... doppler radar looking clear again across thr pacific northwest. looking at the high mexico/texas to continue to progress northward and bring hotter weather this week; specifically late week. looking at the next system to roll through the north part of the state to increase wind this weekend and especially next week. .......................... ......... ................ here's the forecast. 80's by morning with clear skies and winds finally calming down overnight. should be comfortable and clear by morning wit wake-up temps in the 80's again. tomorrow expect a high of 106 again and hotter. we could see some light breezes returning again tomorrow.
extended temps show hotter temps as we head through the week. expecting those temps to peak near 110 by the end of the workweek. staying dry as no monsoon has been seen. wind could be breezy at times through the week, but it's next week and late weekend when we do anticipate stronger winds. monsoon could return late next week or the week after according to long range models but that could change as well.

against jackson state. they've never played a better season opening game known for their band, the sonic boom of the south, then their football team. the band is awesome, the football team -- not so much. prior to the game, unlv unveiled a red painted patch on the south end of the field... in honor of rich abaijan, who passed away. he was a huge unlf football supporter. he would've really enjoyed tonight's game.. .the fireworks and run out onto the field was nothing compared to the fireworks on the field. on its third play from scrimmage, unlv scores... johnny stanton connects with
touchdown. in less then two munutes unlv actually scores twice... following that t-d, the tigers turn it over on the troy hawthrone interception. that pic leads to another unlv t-d... again stanton to boys.. this time 32 yards and a lot of the work from boyd on the ground. it's 14-0 still in the first... rebels leading 14-7 when lexington thomas rushes up the middle for a 17 yards touchdown... fans first... thomas again, this time it's 3 yards into the endzone. rebels leading 28-7 after one. they didn't let up... early in the 2nd unlv turns to david green who scores his first t-d as a rebels... it'ds 35-7. couple minutes later stanton throws to boyd again... this time for 30 yards and the score. by halftime unlv was flurting
most in school history. the spread was 40 1/2 points unlv beats the tigers by winning tonight 63-13... it was that impressive. we've been talking about this band for a few days... the sonic boom of the south. if you saw em, its easy to see why they're one of the best bands in the south. they performed at halftime of tonight's game.. .here's a little sampling of the sonic boom.
