((brian loftus)) thanks for joining us, i'm brian loftus. ((kirsten joyce)) >> and i'm kirsten joyce. we're following breaking news across the valley right now.. at three different locations. ((brian loftus)) let's first go live in north las vegas ... where nia wong just arrived on scene of a deadly shooting at cheyenne and civic center.

situations./// ((kirsten joyce)) also developing overnight .. people took to the streets to protest donald trump's presidency. ((brian loftus)) >> demonstrators shut down highways .. started fires in the streets. ((kirsten joyce)) 8 news now reporter michael stevens joins us live now from outside trump tower just off the strip .. where a peacefull protest was held just a couple hours ago. michael? ((michael stevens)) >> brain, kirsten... only a small group gathered here outside of trump tower yesterday. gathered for a small demonstration. protesters could be heard chanting "not my president," but did not disrupt the flow of traffic. they did fill the sidewalk area... while metro officers made sure nothing got out of hand. it was a much different scene in nearby california. thousands of people flooded into the streets of los angeles protesting the the election of donald trump.
busy freeways. traffic backed up a major freeway for miles at times. los angeles police say they arrested at least 13 people. people in the crowd were not shy voicing their opinions on the new president elect: ((bryant pena // anti-trump protester: this is not a surprise to us. this is a wake up call to the democratic party to step their game up, to elect candidates that represent everybody. not to elevate people like donald trump.)) ((michael stevens)) >> during the demonstration -- that was made to resemble donald trump. one person also lit an american flag on fire... but others quickly extinguished it. the demonstrators were among thousands who took to streets in protest of trump across the country, from new york to texas through much of the west coast. all of the protests took place just hours before donald trump is expected to meet with president obama at the white house today. the oval office meeting symbolically begins the transition of power. brian, kirsten? ((kirsten joyce)) >> michael, has donald trump said anything
>> kirsten... as everyone knows... trump was very vocal on twitter throughout the election... he hasn't tweeted anything since he was elected and hasn't made any formal comments about the protests taking place. kirsten? ((kirsten joyce)) despite the protests, donald trump will visit the white house today to meet with president obama. ((brian loftus)) >> it's their first meeting .. to discuss president- elect trump's transition to commander- in chief. president obama spoke at the rose garden yesterday ... to ensure the process goes smoothly. he reminded everyone ... that no matter where we fall on the political spectrum .. we are all on the same side: (((president obama) "everybody is sad when their side loses an election, but the day after we have to remember that we're actually all on one team. this is an intramural scrimmage. we're not democrats first. we're not republicans first. we are americans first. we're patriots first. we all want what's
>> prior to that .. hillary clinton and tim kaine gave an emotional concession speech in new york city .. her first time going public since losing the campaign. she encouraged her supporters to give trump a chance to lead. immigration reform, many are nervous about what will happen once trump is in the oval office. it's estimated about 200- thousand undocumented citizens live in nevada. many are concerned about the future of the deferred action for childhood arrivals-- also known as daca. it allows undocumented immigrants who came to the u-s before their 16th birthday .. and prior to june 2007 ... to receive 2 year renewable work permits. it also exempts them from deportation. ((brian loftus)) >> we spoke to leaders with "america's voice" .. be catastrophic to our country's economy .. they're urging lawmakers to consider a sensible path to citizenship for people who have lived, worked and gone to school here. trump's immigration plan .. is expected to stress border security .. and he has long talked about building a wall along the border of mexico./// ((kirsten joyce)) and as we mentioned yesterday .... nevada's ballot measure question 2 passed .. which means recreational marijuana will be legal in our state. it officially becomes law on january first ... however, we've learned it could take up to a year before the
department of taxation needs to come up with regulations. licensing for the first 18 months after the regulations are in place-- will be limited to medical marijuana facilities. a 15-percent wholesale tax will cover costs of enforcement and implementation. the rest goes to k-through-12 education./// sherry, how's the weather?
