((brian loftus)) questions for the sheriff answered in today's cup of joe .. ((kirsten joyce)) >> he gives tips on how to safely shop on black friday... next on 8 news now good day.///
this is 8 news now good day)) ((kirsten joyce)) the sheri questions every wednesday in our morning cup of joe segment. we sat down with him during this previously taped interview. ((brian loftus)) thanks for joining us again this morning, sheriff lombardo. kirsten has our first question. ((kirsten joyce)) tomorrow is thanksgiving, of course we've got the mad rush of shoppers, then you have black friday where a lot of the shoppers will be out and about. what advice do you have for people staying safe? a couple years ago we had an incident with someone getting robbed while they were bringing home one of these big tv's from one of the local stores.
you'd think people'd celebrate and it'd be a different attitude but it's also a target rich environment for crooks. we need individuals to be aware of their surroundings, try to park in lighted spots. if you have a great deal of purchases, don't store them in your car then go to the store. do your agenda so you can take your packages home and return to do more shopping. sometimes you don't have the ability to do that, but we recommend it. crime does ine season. people are looking to commit a crime to provide gifts to their loved ones, but it's unfortunate they don't pay for it. ((brian loftus)) and we always see video of people taking boxes off the front porch. sheriff joe lombardo: people need to be aware of their surroundings and understand that going foward. ((brian loftus)) james freeman emailed us with a question: with the growing number of disabled and
like you to address how to respond if stopped while they are driving a vehicle, if ordered to stop out of the vehicle, if they cannot obey for whatever reason because of their handicap. what should they do? sheriff joe lombardo: that's a great question. but lets remove the handicap part. it's the same for anybody that gets pulled over. we ask that you turn on the interior light, if you have that ability, roll down the window if you have that ability. put your hands on the steering wheel so the officers knows he's safely approaching the vehicle. and they'll advise you, what they need you to the vehicle without direction from a police officer. and we ask that individual, hey i'm handicapped i can't step out of the vehicle and they'll make accommadations for whatever the situation is. it's not necessary just because you're handicap, it's anybody that's approached by a police officer. ((brian loftus)) last month, prisoners took an oath to stay crime free.
several years, what's the success rate. sheriff joe lombardo: it's run by a pastor, it's a recidovisom program- in other words preventing individuals that are coming out of the prison system from returning to the prison system. they give them an opportunity, they give them job skills, training, to make them better citizens and assimulate better to society so they don't have to return to that life of crime. the interesting piece on this one- the hope for prisoners is the success rate. they're in the 90+ percentile of people not returning to the lifestyle. programs around the us, you're looking at 40-50% so he's doing the right thing. he knows from experience what does and doesn't work. especially in the valley, speaker ryan recently made a comment nationally, publicly about the success of the program.
sheriff joe lombardo.. you success of the program. ((brian loftus)) if you have a question for sheriff joe lombardo.. you can submit it on our website, las vegas now dot com.. just look for the link on the right side of the page. ((kirsten joyce)) >> you can find out if your question was answered every wednesday.. between 6:30 and 7 am./// ((kirsten joyce)) while you may be revving your engine to get out the door for thanksgiving .... the motor trend interni home to a million dollar exotic vehicle display ... brian is outside our studios this morning --todd hovsepian, show director --taking place at the convention center from the 25th through the 27th
