the n-h-l expansion team will hit the ice next year. and we have team coverage... chris matthius will tell us how they picked the logo in just a second. ((paul joncich)) >> we start with patrick walker.. who shows us how far we've come in such a short amount of time... and what the team still has to get done. ((patrick walker)) what a whirlwind it has been as las vegas... and the state of nevada... secured its first professional sports team. but as far as we've come... there's still a lot to do... and not long to get it done. ((patrick walker)) in less than a year... a preseason stop for the n-h-l. the vegas golden knights will be the home team. bill foley first spoke with us about his goal to bring hockey to the desert... from his home in white fish, montana. ((bill foley/vegas golden knights majority owner: now is the time for las vegas to have a major sports franchise... you just tick off the reasons and las vegas is ready." )) ((patrick walker)) he has delivered. foley smashed his 10-thousand seat season ticket commitment goal... which swayed the n-h-l to award las vegas a franchise on june 22nd... 2016.
five months later... the team got its name. the vegas golden knights. ((patrick walker)) the team will make its regular season debut in about 11 months. but there is a lot to happen between now and then. next june... the team will hold an expansion draft... choosing a player from each of the 30 other teams. those players will be introduced at t-mobile arena june 21st. ((bill foley/vegas golden knights majority owner: "and every 3-5 minutes we're going to announce a player, and there will be several players, 5 or 6 that'll be there, they'll come out and put the jersey on, and we're going to fill up the arena.")) ((patrick walker)) participate in the n-h-l draft two days later in chicago. ((patrick walker)) there's still a lot to be done. the team also has to select a coach... and a minor-league affiliate. that's expected to happen soon. patrick walker... 8 news now. ((denise valdez)) so now that the logo and team name are picked.... what made them choose those ones? sports 8 director chris maathius is here with details. ((chris maathuis)) there was five months in between the time the city was awarded a franchise and the name and logo were revealed. five months to the day.
but its impact will last forever. with the name reveal... las vegas now has a major league sports identity. when somebody says 'golden knights' they'll think of las vegas... it'll take a little time, perhaps a few seasons, but it'll happen. it's more then just a name on a shirt, owner bill foley wants his fans and players to understand what it means to be a knight. (( )) bill foley/majority owner: "the knight protects the unprotected, defends the realm, never gives up never gives in always advances never retreats and that's what our team is going to be." gary bettman/commish: " this wanted we approved it and we watched the evolution and we thought that this was going to be very strong and vibrant, and again focus tonight on the logo and and name, the uniform is next." ((chris maathuis)) the uniform coming this summer... there are mixed reviews about the name, some like it, others don't. some say it'll grow on em and when they win, everybody will

elegant, more expensive thanksgiving meal.. charlie palmer steak at the four seasons has a spread for 75 per person.. alize at the palms will set you back 95 per person... and giada at the cromwell offers a four course menu for 95 dollars... some of the more interesting options- if you want to still enjoy thanksgiving at home but avoid cooking.. the all american bar and grille at the rio offers a full thanksgiving meal for four people for 60 dollars plus tax and tip.. you have to ordr ready for you when you pick it up.. and the caesars baccanal buffet... it's 69.99 for adults.. but if you haven't been to a buffet here in las vegas- the lines can be long and discouraging.. at baccanal there are kiosks in front of the buffet.. you enter in your phone number and they'll text you when it's time to get in line- which gives you more time with your family - out of line... we also asked you on facebook your favorite places to go for thanksgiving...

temps today near 60 and unseasonably cooler than the mid 60's we're supposed to be at. winds still remain breezy at times as well but will decrease even more tomorrow and into our weekend. we have plenty of sunshine as well but become milder by the weekend. ................................ ... ................................ .. neighborhood by neighborhood temps in the mid' the east side of town where we're lower in elevation and obviously cooler for the westside near the mountain where wind barreling through. regional temps also stayed chilly this morning and not too much of a warm up as well today as most of the state stayed below average. ................................ ... .................. satellite and radar composite
we had yesterday. we have cooler weather in the wake of that cold front so temps will take a while to recover. we're anticipating our first freeze of the season for some areas in souther nevada. freeze alerts have been issued but las vegas not under that freeze warming. we stay cold and but not under a freeze warning as we get temps we haven't seen since february 7th. ................................ tonight expect a low near 40 and chilly as you'll need the jacket tomorrow a.m. winds become more light breezes tonight and less windy as earlier today. tomorrow expect a high in the mid 60's and milder and finally near average for a change.
