[ cheers and applause ] that's what i'm talking about. here's what people are talking about. it's a big, big day for the video gamers out there. everybody has been waiting for this. finally it's here. today was the release of the video game, grand theft auto v. [ cheers ] kids were hoping their teachers didn't notice they weren't in school. while teachers were hoping their students didn't notice they weren't in school. it was very interesting. let's see what's going on in washington. joe biden has got people talking that he'll run for president after he was spotted at a fund-raiser in iowa this week. unfortunately, he missed giving his speech, because he spent four hours trapped in a corn maze. [ laughter and applause ] those things are very tricky. you don't know how to get out of that. >> steve: you don't know were to go. >> jimmy: it's fun for the whole
family. this is actually a really big deal for britney spears. i saw that britney spears just signed a $29 million contract to perform shows in vegas for two years. which explains that new saying, "what happens in vegas was prerecorded at a studio in l.a." [ laughter and applause ] it's catchy. not as catchy -- did you see "dancing with the stars" last night? did you see that? [ scattered cheers ] that's right, new season of "dancing with the stars." i thought this was interesting. the contestants made sure to point out their routines this year will not feature twerking. [ laughter ] you know a dance has a bad reputation when even snooki's like, "we're trying to keep things respectable around here. trying to class up the joint. no twerking." actually, one of the contestants on "dancing with the stars" this season this season is bill nye the science guy. [ cheers and applause ] we all love bill nye. >> steve: come on.
>> jimmy: did you see when he met his partner last night? he's just such a geek, this guy. i love him, but it's clear he was a little nervous. take a look at this. >> ladies and gentlemen, if you're watching, tyne is kind of a knockout. yeah? >> thank you. >> this might be the best example in history of beauty and the geek. watching the show, it looks like the successful couples have that -- i mean, frankly, it's sexual tension going on. from an evolutionary standpoint. >> right. your blood alcohol level is too high. the way it works is, if you dry to blow into your phone, your blood alcohol level is definitely too high. [ light laughter ] in fact, i think she's still a little wasted. we have her here tonight. siri, how are you doing? >> not so good, jimmy. i don't remember much about last night. >> jimmy: we really went for it, you were hammered. >> i'm so embarrassed, i think i hooked up with a motorola razr. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: siri, do you have any good hangover cures? [ beep ] >> looking up hangover cures. ah, forget it, i honestly can't even deal.
the room is spinning. oh, god. >> jimmy: all right. siri, siri, before we go there's something i actually do need to know. can you tell me a good seafood restaurant in the area? >> seafood? you have to be [ bleep ] kidding me. we're going to white castle. but, let's stop somewhere to get a gatorade first. >> jimmy: okay, very good. thank you, siri, go take a nap. [ cheers and applause ] i don't know why they're doing this, but i read this week nasa is sending chocolates to astronauts on the international space station. i guess it makes sense, it's not like those guys have to watch their weight. it's like, "nope, still zero pounds." everyone gets a free joke. i weighed zero pounds, the joke got zero laughs, interesting. >> steve: laughless. >> jimmy: actually, i'm in a good mood. i'm in a really good mood today because fall is around the corner. didn't it feel like it was fall today? [ cheers and applause ] it's like crisp -- it's fall. autumn is here, you know what that means. it's the return of starbucks' pumpkin spice latte. [ cheers and applause ] that's what i'm talking about. some people love it, some people don't. so, as a service to you, we're going to try to help sort out this mess and weigh the good with the bad. it's time for pros and cons. here we go. ♪ pros and cons and pros and cons and pros ♪ >> jimmy: that's right, here are the pros and cons of the pumpkin spice latte. pro, it contains pumpkin, sugar, spice and cinnamon.

[ laughter ] >> jimmy: pro, the pumpkin spice latte has its own facebook page. con, realizing a cup of coffee has 12,000 more friends than you do, that's sad. pro, starbucks announced its arrival on twitter using the hash tag #psl. con, when that didn't trend, they quickly changed it to "you know that latte a skank if." [ laughter ] pro, getting excited about the return of the pumpkin spice latte can only mean one thing -- con, you're white.

called, "the short game." and man, these kids are talented. and very, very nice. a couple punks. and everything i do now, i have a playlist of, you know, everything i'm doing. >> jimmy: whenever you have stuff like that? >> whenever i have a character, yeah. way into -- a way in and out of music. music's a way in and out of characters. and that really started from cameron. because i'd be in the middle of a take, and suddenly he'd just bust out some phenomenal tune. and i'd be, like, "whoa." >> jimmy: i remember i had to scene where i had to, like, walk like i was really confident or something. he's, like, "all right, come on. we're going to roll and action. walk really confident." i'm, like -- i'm just an awful actor. and he's, like -- and so he cranks jimi hendrix. it was, like -- [ imitating guitar riff ] it totally worked. i was, like, "you're a genius!" >> there you go. >> jimmy: you are a genius. >> he is a genius. he's a genius. [ applause ] stuff like that. >> jimmy: but, gosh, you know you have your share of giant blockbuster movies. "pirates of the caribbean." oh, my gosh. i mean, that's just -- [ cheers and applause ] how fun is that? everywhere. i mean -- and then -- and now you're going to be in "the hobbit" that comes out. >> yeah, yeah. [ cheers and applause ] that one's going to be fun. it's --
they asked me to come back and get the blond wig and bow and arrow going for legolas, which is great. >> jimmy: i mean, come on. [ cheers ] >> it's amazing. >> jimmy: that was the first time i think i actually -- i saw you. and i was, like, who's that dude? he was so good. and all the girls are going nuts for you, and they love it. but, i mean, you could tell -- and peter jackson -- >> he's a genius, yeah. >> jimmy: it's the love that he put into it. you can tell he that appreciates the stories and what he does. >> he does. he's a real creative genius. and he's down in new zealand doing his own thing, and he just does it the way he wants to. and it's what i think makes it so original. he actually -- it was funny. we did -- we were on set when they released the first trailer for the second movie. and there was -- there were these two girls. these two girls -- there was a response online, and these two girls went absolutely ballistic. >> jimmy: watching the trailer. >> watching the trailer of the movie. >> jimmy: and peter jackson's, like -- >> and pete's the sort of guy who goes, "let's do a response. let's do a response." so they filmed us responding to these girls responding to the trailer of the movie. >> jimmy: that's -- look at -- >> it was kind of cheesy. >> jimmy: we have the girls. let's take a look at these girls reacting to the trailer. look at this.

on the show. now, we have this. >> sneaking in the back door. >> jimmy: you really are. you were sneaking around the hallways. i remember leaving one night. i think i was leaving around, like, 1:00 in the morning. we were writing some bit or editing something, and i lost -- i was leaving, and i walked by the roots' dressing room, and i was, like -- i heard this great music in there. i was, like -- like, they're always playing something cool. and i'm, like, it sounds like elvis costello. it's pretty cool, man. and i'm, like, walking by. i just poked -- i just, like, peeked my head in to say what's up. and you were there. and i was, like, wait, what? like, elvis costello, why are you here? this is so weird. i thought i was having, like, a nyquil dream. [ laughter ] but you kind of -- >> a nyquil dream? >> jimmy: yeah, you were kind of sneaking around. i did not know you were -- >> it's been a long time since i've heard that phrase. >> jimmy: exactly. >> i mean, that's -- that is obviously -- now the secret can be revealed. i want to thank you very sincerely for not having me thrown out of the building. >> jimmy: oh, come on. >> we creep in under cover of darkness. i mean, as you know, i am the
man of 1,000 places and 1,000 voices. >> jimmy: yes, absolutely, yeah. >> so i'd come as the air conditioning repairman. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: was that you? oh, i thought i knew that was you. >> pizza delivery. that got past security a couple times. >> jimmy: i was wondering why the domino's guy had an accent. yeah, i was wondering. that was you, wasn't it? yeah. >> would you like some pepperoni? >> jimmy: yes. [ imitating accent ] would you like some pepperoni? yeah, this one's for free. >> pizza, pizza. >> jimmy: yeah, that's right. even a different company. >> no, but this -- we did a lot of the music for this record. >> jimmy: but how did it come about? just -- because you've been on the show three times now? >> well, because we were on the show. i'm going to stop now before i talk myself into nbc asking for royalties. >> jimmy: no, no, no. absolutely not. >> no, we didn't rehearse here. >> jimmy: so you didn't do it here? >> no, not here. >> jimmy: did you like the roots' dressing room? >> well -- i don't -- have you ever filmed in the roots' dressing room? oh, no. that's silly. because you can't get a camera in there. as you know, there is just, like, no expense -- what's the phrase? spent. and --
>> jimmy: the roots have a very, very adequate dressing room, though. >> they have a working room. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: it's very -- it's very, very nice. >> it's a working space, but -- >> jimmy: it's definitely a working space. >> definitely a working space. but it's a combination dressing room, workshop, laboratory, loveseat. >> jimmy: loveseat? questlove. >> of course. >> questlove: hey. >> jimmy: watch it. >> it also has no clocks and no windows, which is like a las vegas casino. >> jimmy: we don't let them know what time it is. >> you can lose the college fund in there no problem. and we -- i mean, actually, seriously, the last time we were leaving the set here, quest dropped a word in my ear about taking it further than just the songs we played here on the set. and i really appreciate, actually, that we got the opportunity. we developed the toolbox to make this record on this very stage. and steven mandel, who sits
there with his potions and -- >> jimmy: is that what those things are -- is that what they're called? potions? >> beakers, yeah. and he -- and cooking up this dialogue that we've had between quest and myself and all of the guys, and little by little, we admitted to ourselves we had made a record. >> jimmy: we -- i mean, it's getting unbelievable reviews, which i'm so happy about. congratulations on this. [ cheers and applause ] explain to me -- >> this is the -- >> jimmy: have you seen this yet? >> no, this is the first one i've seen. this is the moment that, you know -- like, it doesn't matter how many of these you make. when you get this thing in your hand, this is the -- this is it. and this -- look at this. it's, like, a proper record album. >> jimmy: yeah, it's a record out. it's art. [ cheers and applause ] they don't this anymore. they don't do it like that anymore. >> if you're going to have people, you know, sort of say, "well, we want you to hear what we did -- we put a lot of, you know -- lot of feeling into it." we cut up songs of mine, put them back together a different way to tell a different story.
and i've never had as much fun making something that's as -- it's -- there's a lot of contemplation of the things in the world. we all know what's wrong. we want to make it better. i think it's a hopeful record despite some of the sad songs that we're singing, but making it was a gas. >> jimmy: was a gas. i mean, i love it. i love it so much.
