4:00 am
coming up on "early today," can you say dynasty? the san francisco giants have won their third world series in five years. new jersey's chris christie takes a direct approach when confronted with tough questions. >> so, listen, you want to have the conversation later? i'm happy to have it, buddy. but until that time, sit down and shut up. >> we'll hear from the other guy next. plus, showdown over the ebola quarantine and the nurse determined to fight the state. it is thursday, october 30th. "early today" starts right now. good morning. nice to be with you this morning. i'm frances rivera. the san francisco giants are the world series champs again.
4:01 am
it all came down to the final inning. >> that's in the air to left center. that ball is gone. and it gets back to the wall! a mistake in the outfield he will hold there with two outs, representing the tying run. salvador perez, the 2-2. sandoval inside. >> it is done. the dynasty lives and the giants take it in 3-2 victory. back in san francisco, the team claims their title in five seasons. the pitcher won mvp and a new car. he holds a new record for the most innings pitched in the post season. here he is. >> i wasn't thinking about how many innings i was going to go
4:02 am
or how many pitchers, just about getting outs. i can't laugh anymore. i'm a little tired now. >> he deserves a rest. after tonight, the party moves back home to san francisco for a parade and championship rally. this morning, fear and frustration over ebola. in connecticut, virus jitters. a 7-year-old was banned from class after a trip to nigeria. her outraged family is now suing. in maine, a quarantine showdown and just hours kaci hickox is ready to blow it off. ron moore is live in washington. it looks like all eyes are on maine this morning. >> reporter: absolutely. kaci hickox has been ordered to stay inside her home. but a few hours ago, she came out fighting. the nurse ordered quarantined by the states of new jersey and maine because of ebola fears says she won't submit to what amounts to house arrest. >> i don't want to hurt anyone in the public. but i don't think this is an acceptable line to be drawn. >> reporter: kaci hickox vows to fight maine authorities saying
4:03 am
this is about civil rights, not public health. >> we have to make decisions on science, and i am completely healthy. you know, you could hug me, you could shake my hand, there is no way that i would give you ebola. >> reporter: at the white house, president obama stood with medical professionals who have been fighting ebola including dr. kent brantly, who survived the disease. >> we need to call them what they are, american heroes. they deserve our gratitude. and they deserve to be treated with dignity and with respect. >> reporter: but u.s. troops are returning from west africa and won't have a choice, mandatory 21-day quarantine. >> a policy that was discussed in great detail by the communities, by the families, of our military men and women, and they very much wanted a safety valve on this. >> reporter: a safety valve the subject of heated debate. despite the policy, the state
4:04 am
department says its workers coming back from west africa with will not be subjected to mandatory quarantine. frances? >> brian mooar in washington, d.c., thank you. new this morning, her story gripped the country. britney menard, terminally ill, choosing when she would die. the date, november 1st. but with two days left, the stunning announcement. >> so if november 2nd comes along and i passed, i hope my family is still proud of me and the choices i made. and if november 2nd comes along and i'm still alive, i know that will just still be moving forward as a family, like out of love for each other and not that the decision will come later. >> so heart breaking. she has brain cancer. last spring she was given six months to live. she planned on dying by taking prescribed medication. last week she completed her bucket list, a trip to the grand canyon.
4:05 am
the midterm elections are in five days but we might be getting an early sneak peek at the big one in 2016 with shots fired from one likely presidential candidate to another. in response to hillary clinton's comments that corporations and businesses don't create jobs, a statement she later revised, jeb bush sounded like a candidate saying this at a gop event in colorado. >> this last week i saw something that was breathtaking, a candidate -- a former secretary of state who was campaigning in massachusetts, where she said that don't let them tell you that businesses create jobs. they are created by businesses where people's income rise, where they can live a life of purpose and meaning, independent of government. that should be the mission. >> the former governor spoke to nbc backstage about his son's comments that he's, quote, more than likely to run for president in 2016. >> he's got an opinion.
4:06 am
he didn't talk to me. when you have kids, you probably have the same frustrations. you love them to death and they have their own opinions, but i'll make up my mind as i said at the end of the year. in new jersey, it has been two years since super storm sandy struck the jersey shore. a political speech in a hard hit town turned into a public smackdown. a protester took on governor chris christie. christie did what he does and fired back. >> so, listen, you want to have the conversation later? i'm happy to have it, buddy. but until that time, sit down and shut up. there is about 1,000 things i'll do tonight, going to dinner with you is about number 1,001. >> the protester, james keaty, a business owner and former councilman. did he expect christie's tirade? here's what he told msnbc's chris hayes. >> i had a feeling the governor was going to respond in the way he did. think it is unfortunate. i think he showed so little
4:07 am
respect to the citizen of new jersey. >> he said he did invite christie to his family's bar to talk. christie made it pretty clear he 1,000 other things to do first. now to hawaii and that hot mess in pahoa, the lava is oozing 30 feet per hour. the images from space are stunning. nasa is just releasing this new photo. nbc's hallie jackson has the latest from high above. >> reporter: we are at the tip of the sphere, the leading edge of the pahoa lava flow. here in town, 40 to 50 towns are in potentially the direct path of this lava. this home looks to be one of the lucky ones. the flow path is just a few hundred yards of the house here. it doesn't look like this lava is moving at all, but it is going anywhere from five yards an hour to 20 yards an hour. this is so slow moving that the lava on top is hardening and blackening. there is still red hot lava underneath.
4:08 am
right now it feels like we're in a furnace. we're close to the lava, you can see some of the breakouts. and i'll tell you, you can feel it, you can barely breathe. it is smoky and thick. this is what is feeding the lava flow that is headed right over the town of pa who hoeia. it is basically a bathtub full of lava, it is crusted over on top, but act as insulation keeping the lava underneath very hot. that is like ice on a lake. underneath are these tubes, that's what's funneling the lava towards civilization. >> something to see there. that was nbc's hallie jackson. the federal aviation administration is investigating a deadly military jet crash in southern california. a hawk hunter nk-58 aircraft crashed near a naval base on wednesday. the pilot who was the only person on board at the time was killed in the incident. it happened as the plane was preparing to land. we don't know yet whether the pilot had reported any problems before that crash. time to get a look at our
