a very good tuesday morning to you. 7:26 i'm laura garcia-cannon. students at san jose's leland high school are mourning a classmate's death. the school says 11th grader tristan wynn collapsed yesterday afternoon while jogging near the football field. wynn was a football player and ran track. so far no official cause of death but the school says he did have a history of asthma. the hits keep coming for the san francisco 49ers the star defensive lay inner suddenly called it quits. linebacker chris borland says he's retiring just after one year in the league. the reason concern over head injuries and concussions. manager trent balke says "while

in one of the most startling retirements, the nfl is loses a promising young player one season into the nfl career. 24-year-old linebacker wrist borland informed "outside the line" that he is retiring to avoid the long term effects of brain injuries like cte. borland had over 100 tackles last season for 49ers, he told reporters, i want to do what is best for my health. from what i researched and experienced, i don't think it is worth the risk. continuing, i want to live a long and healthy life and don't want to have neurological diseases or die otherwise. it sparked debate among nfl critics. >> life expectancy for nfl players. >> tomorrow is not guaranteed. i understand that. >> brett favre opened up to matt

now to our special series kids and sports. and as parents, we know there's a risk our children can get injured in any activity. >> but did you know according to the cdc, kids between the ages of 5 and 14 account for 50% of all sports-related injuries in hospitals. so here with advice on how to prevent those injuries is a team division for the new york knicks basketball organization. >> and a sports medicine specialist both from here in manhattan which frank and cody know very well. >> i can't believe those statistics how young these kids are and the kinds of injuries they're sustaining. what sorts of injuries are these kids experiencing? >> i think it tends to be more sports-specific. in the racket sports like tennis or baseball, more upper extremity injuries. and basketball or soccer, more

hyperextension sprains. >> and what about concussions? >> concussions are very common as well. i think one of the things that's interesting is they've gotten so much attention recently. i think that's a combination probably of them being more common. there's a lot more people participating in sports. there's probably an increased roughness of some of the sports. i think a lot of it is just increased awareness and people are getting diagnosed more. >> but what about the equipment? we hear so much about the fact that -- frank my husband, played in these kinds of things. and without even a face guard. can these hurt the person as well? >> well, there's a theory that if you're wearing more protection, that you tend to be less cautious. so the theory of the old leather helmet was they weren't hitting with their heads as much. and now that they have more protection, they might not be as cautious. but the let me tell yous fit them well. and especially in the youth athletes, when i was a team physician for a high school football team i'd go around and

check some of the people's helmets. and some were borrowing from someone else and it didn't fit them well. that's the most important, that it fits them well. but it's a combination of factors. >> some kids play one sport and they're so into that one sport and they play it -- so they're using the same parts of their body, i guess you could say. is that unhealthy for kids? should they be playing multiple sports if they have the choice? >> i think in general, the risk with playing one sport is you get overuse injuries because using that joint or doing that activity all the time. and it's important to be involved in a wide range of sports develop better -- learn to move better and you don't overuse those specific joints for a given sport. >> anything you can do to prevent -- besides quit the sport? some advice for parents to give their kids, do this before you go out and do that? any kind of advice for them, preventative stuff? >> stretching is really

important and getting accustomed to a new activity before you -- that's true for kids and adults. making sure they have a good base before they start a sport. but warming up is really important for injury prevention. >> how would a kid he had a concussion? used to you had to get knocked out cold. but how would a kid know from a regular football game if he's got one? >> a lot of education is around getting your bell rung is concussion. only 10% of concussions have a loss of consciousness. so the old idea was that a concussion required you to lose consciousness but that's not true. >> how do you know? >> that's tricky because the symptoms evolve over time, too. it's important to evaluate a kid right when they come off the field and they might be a little out of it, they might have been -- looked off kilter or unsteady -- sometimes you have to wait and see what evolves with their symptoms. so you want to be cautious.
