mom, brian threw a ball in the house! >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with kathie lee gifford and hodakotb. live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. hi, everybody. it's monday, august 12th, 2015. jenna bush is here filling in while cath a kathie is off. i know you all by now have heard the news about frank gifford. kathie lee always called him frank gifford. both names. he passed away yesterday in connecticut and i have to tell you, it's one of those things that frank weighed 178 pounds. you knew his weight exactly. and you knew that he was in good
physical health. so, to hear the news was shocking. it was weird. i was, you know, i was flying back from a weekend with friends in new orleans and when i landed, i looked at my phone and it happened to be my birthday and i was looking at birthday wishes. just flipping through things and i flipped and i saw a text from kathie lee and i looked at it and she left a voicemail, too. she said frank had passed. i kept reading it, and reading it and rereading it. thinking it was not true. she asked people not to come to her house. so i left the airport and got to her house. she looked at me and said, i'm so glad you never listen to me. >> she wanted you there for sure. how is she doing? >> you know, you know how she talks about her faith and i know she lives her faith and i believed it. but i got to tell you, i didn't believe it more than i did yesterday when i saw her after
that. because frank had passed away hours before and she said she was rejoicing in her life. when she said is, jenna, you felt it. it wasn't the kind of thing that you say, you know, i know there's initial shock when someone passed because we all lost someone and we know what it feels like. but not like this. and i said to her, and i was crying and she was holding my hands. >> she was comforting you. >> she said, let me tell you something. let me tell you what a tragedy is. you know the kids in the truly brave video, the kids that didn't make it, the young kids with cancer. that's a tragedy. let me tell you about frank gifford. she said frank gifford was a hall of famer, was an incredible football broadcasting legend and more than all that, he was a family man. he built this family and she said he is a triumph. she said, remember that. frank gifford is a triumph. he got to live to almost 85 years old. >> he was a legend.
everybody talks about legacy which some people don't like that word. but the legacy that he left are his kids, his children, who are the most kind, loving kids. the way that kathie lee talked about frank. i mean -- >> and you look at cass and cody and he has three other children from a previous marriage. but we came to know cass and cody the best. and to watch how they are and i only, you know, i only saw cody yesterday. but i have to tell you, i'm in awe of that whole family. >> you know, it's so, the fact that kathie lee talks. she taught me a lot about faith and i know she has taught you, too, tons. sometimes kathie lee she talks about it and it's one thing to talk about and another thing to live your faith. incredible to witness. >> she does. and you know what's funny.
we all got to know frank. frank wasn't just the husband of someone you work with. we got taknow ho know. when i first started working with kath. before we started i went out to their house to meet frank and cody and cass. he said i know something about a hit show, let me tell you how you can have a hit show with kathie lee. i said, okay. he said, you have to trust her with everything you have. and he said, and look at me. and she is the most trustworthy person i have ever known. and i never forgot that, that showed how much love he had for her. but he came on our show a bunch of times and he was always, he was always fun. i mean, you know, i have to say, when he showed up here, we knew we were going to laugh and i think we have a little bit of frank on our show. >> frank gifford is in the house, baby pyou were 56 when w
got married and i was 20. and we proceeded to have two children. you were 60, i think, when you had cods and 63 when we had cass. >> both of them have done extraordinarily well amdemically. >> remember we mosted the olympics together. >> the calgary olympics. and a great friend had this wonderful idea to put frank and kathie together. we actually were early on in our relationship. >> we were just newly married and tom shales the "washington post" critic twor marshmallows sitting by the fire. >> used to do your own show with regis and regis would get sick or something i would pop in and just sit there. so, here i am. i'm sitting here. >> and you're doing magnificently sweetheart.
you really are. >> so sweet. >> oh, my gosh. >> my favorite thing whenever she's been generous enough to invite us over to her house, the way he laughs at her. >> he still thinks she is totally hysterical. >> it is good to marry a man who can see that. >> we have a few more clips because we want to share with you. reminiscing about all the stuff and everybody has a frank story. and i'm talking about a guy in the gym came up to me and said my son met frank gifford when he was this tall. people were stopping me and they all have a moment with frank. we had our share of moments, too, here on the show a few years ago. they did like this he said/she said kind of game. anyway, take a look. >> very grainy. >> so what did he say, again? >> he said i like it when he tells me i look skinny. >> says yes taeverything you say. >> that's not true. but i do like it when he does
say yes. you know i love about him so much is that he's a very giving person. frank is a really generous, sweet person. and he's a good man and i'm very grateful for him. >> it's hard to look at those clips. you know what i mean. feels like just yesterday she was sitting here and making jokes about him and her and them and the kids and the rest of it. >> it definitely does. shows how much of a family this show is that he was part of your family, too. >> he really was. he really was. i know when he came on the show, you know, he and i shared a little something special, too. >> he said something about you when he came on the show once that i think we want to look at that shows how he thought about you. >> oh, okay. >> when i first met hoda the first two or three minutes. i thought how is this going to work? seems so different. >> we are. >> five minutes later she came into our lives.
>> isn't she amazing? >> extraordinary woman and most of the people share that same feeling but she's so much fun and so bright and so quick and very special lady. >> i thought that was going to make you cry but it made me cry. >> made me cry, too. anyway. okay. we, frank, we know frank as our friend and a friend of the show and a friend of us. but to the nation, really, to new york, especially, but to the nation, he was a legend. i mean, you look at all the newspapers today. and it talks about a man for all seasons and "the post." i love this picture of the giant. but he was in the hall of fame back in 1977 and it's interesting because i've never seen this clip, but i know he spoke at that event. let's take a look. >> where i came from. it has helped me with a lot of young people. and young stars coming up in the game today who can lose sight of
what it really is all about. what we do on the field is about as meaningful as what takes place in the stands. and what we can do to contribute to the help of young people i have always tried to do and what we can do to help the community in which we are a part of. >> kids always right there. i cass by the way called up this morning and i spoke to her a little bit and she was so grateful for the outpouring of love and affection that is coming not only from the nfl and they talked about him at golf match and just kept talking about frank. but also from people here at nbc because everyone is asking and everyone wants to know how they can help. and to all the people, you know, it's so funny times you think about twitter and think i hate twitter. such a place for people to talk about what a wonderful guy
frank, i always want to say is, but was. meredith was one of the people. she tweeted, " -- >> "so heartbroken to learn about frank gifford's passing. he was a true gentleman." kendall jenner tweeted, "rest in peace to my godfather." >> a lot of people don't know he is the godfather to kendall and kylie. >> you are in our thoughts today. >> and they are endless, by the way. so many tweets. we want to thank, everybody, too. on our facebook page. we want to point out to christine gardner, too. christine is a member of their family. she is kathie lee's dearest friend and assistant, but we love her here. and she's heartbroken, as well. >> she's been working with him forever. she raised their kids. >> yeah.
she and kath did. >> a lot of people want to know how they can help. kathie lee is asking for donations to cassidy's place. this is the place that kath and frank built. to help kids with some of them are addicted to aids issues or addicted to drugs or things like that. anyway, they helped all kinds of disadvantaged children. people who have all kinds of issues. it's cassidy's place and they would love you to donate anything that you'd like to give to them. she's in our prayers. kath, i don't know if you're watching, you're probably not. but i love you and i miss you. >> more on frank gifford and his incredible life after this. i thought activia was for big digestive issues. until i realized our body handles a lot.
