"early today" starts right now. good morning, everyone. i'm alex witt. donald trump continues his new york brawl with ted cruz hoping to put a little distance between them. he has overwhelming support in the latest new york polling. his numbers aren't as lopsided in pennsylvania, which votes at the end of the month. he leads ted cruz by just nine points there. all three republican candidates are looking to take a bite out of the 93 delegates up for grabs and nbc's peter alexander reports. >> reporter: donald trump pulled up at his manhattan high-rise facing criticism for being too insulated, trump's campaign announcing new hires. >> we need more brains and muscle. >> reporter: shifting strategy after a weak showing in wisconsin, trump scrapping a planned california trip friday and skipping colorado to focus on fortifying his lead in his home state. >> it's great to be home. this is home. it's great to be home. >> reporter: why? trump now needs 59% of remaining delegates to clinch the
nomination, sweep new york and that number drops to 53%. touting support of former new york city mayor rudy giuliani. trump's aides looking to capitalize on the media market reaching states with upcoming primaries. challeng challengers zeroing in, and ted cruz with orthodox jews in brooklyn. john kasich, a taste of a neighborhood in the bronx. >> we love new york values. >> reporter: about those value, trump again attacked cruz. >> when he started lecturing me on new york values, like we're no good, like we're no good -- >> reporter: cruz casting trump like hillary clinton as a liberal. >> really want to see a general election between two new york liberals who agree on washington being the center of the universe. >> reporter: a new poll shows seven in ten americans have a negative view of the front-runner but hugely popular
among new york republicans. >> to be honest, used toing do a republic a democrat, nob a republican just to vote for donald trump. hillary clinton campaigning in her old new york stomping grounds with little trouble with her metro card but looked at a nasty turn the race is taken when asked about bernie sanders unqualified remarks. >> i don't know why he's saying that, but i will take bernie sanders over donald trump or ted cruz anytime. so -- let's keep our eye on what's really at stake in this election. >> sanders wife jane sat down with msnbc rachel maddow trying to make a shift in tone. >> bernie has moved on. i mean, had e has said, okay, let's -- let's not use the word unqualified. let's use the word contrast. why do i think i'm better than her? >> reporter: when sanders talked to "late night's" seth meyers he
didn't use the word but left the door open to more fired up rhetoric. >> the issue is, you know, after we won in wisconsin and that was our sixth victory in seven caucuses and primaries, i think the clinton campaign has been getting a little bit nervous and i think they have been getting more negative, and i hope very much we can have an issue-oriented campaign. if people attack me, we will respond. >> both continue to campaign throughout the empire state today. and former president bill clinton on the defense yesterday. repeatedly interrupted by black lives matter protestors. one started shouting about issues including how his 1999 crime bill led to a surge in incarcerations. >> wait a minute. wait a minute. okay. i heard it. can i answer?
no. you see, here's the thing. i like protestors, but the ones that won't let you answer are afraid of the truth. that's a simple rule. very, very afraid. >> clinton went on to defend the bill saying it throwed a 25-year low in crime and a 30-year low in the murder rate. and breaking news. just this past hour the vatican released pope francis' must anticipated document dealing his views on family. it's titled "the joy of love" and in it the pope warns not to get caught up in an idealistic view of marriage saying love within a marriage changes and so does sexual desire. the pontiff suggests that married couples renew their love for each other year after year. pope francis calls divorce and evil, but he also thinks divorce and remarried catholics shouldn't feel excommunicated. his views on gays and lesbians remain unchanged telling followers to respect them and avoid unjust discrimination,
violence and aggression. oklahoma firefighters continue working to contain monster spreading wildfire, multiple burns raging throughout the state fed by strong winds and drought conditions. the largest, calmed the 350 complex fire, has burned more than 57,000 acres so far and is only 20% contained. there are no reported f fatalit although several firefighters hospitalized with heat exhaustion. and kansas, 18 square miles xroied so far. authorities in texas continue to search for the suspect wanted in sunday's murder at the university of texas at austin. police have released video of the suspect, still unidentified, but seen here getting on and eventually pushing a bicycle. the graphics and annotations were added by the police. the suspect is described as a black male about 6 feet tall with athletic build and officials say bystander may have seen the suspect without knowing it. a $15,000 reward is offered for any information leading to an
arrest. meanwhile, a vigil was held yesterday on campus for 18-year-old freshman haruka weiser remembered as a beloved member of the school's dance community, who was liked and admired by classmates. police in galvaton, tennessee released graphic video of an officer-involved shooting. it happened werns after a sheriff's deputy was stabbed serving an eviction notice. yolanda sweat allegedly went after another responding officer with a medinah-style a. a warning, the following video may be disturbing to some of you. >> all right. get on the ground! get on the ground! get on the ground, now! drop it! drop it! drop it! >> authorities say officers performed cpr on sweat but pronounced dead on the scene. the officer who shot her is on
leave pending an investigation. a wild chase in california, on and off the highways and through the city streets with wall-to-wall coverage. tv viewers captivated by a pair of burglary suspects on the run bep have the story. >> reporter: a very wet and very wild high-speed chase in los angeles. we watched a dangerous police chase turn into an all-out joy ride. it was raining, but the burglary suspects dropped the top on this mustang convertible and started doing doughnuts on hollywood boulevard, along the famous hollywood walk of fame, pedestrians troon avoid being hit and on the freeway, a tmz tour bus tries to box them in but they slip away. the mustang losing a tire. the chase finally slowing down in a south los angeles neighbor and coming to a stop. the suspects s appearing to wai for police, shaking hands and high-fiving with a crowd gathered on the street snapping selfies before they are arrested. an apparent end to a very odd
pursuit on the streets of los angeles. scotty schwartz, nbc news, los angeles. well, in florida, at least three tornadoes were confirmed in the tampa-st. pete area early thursday. cell phone video capturing a funnel cloud over clearwater and officials say at least 50 homes damaged, monstly from the uprooted trees. no injuries reported. get to bill karins with the friday forecast. anything good for the weekend? >> yesterday, you saw the picture of the chase, the roads looked wet around l.a. and a lot of showers around. upper level lows continuing to spin here. a decent amount of rain moving north of the phoenix area up around prescott and sedona, heading up to the grand canyon. for the day today, still having scattered showers, maybe an isolated downpour or two. a few thunderstorms especially higher elevations seeing most of it. by the time we go through the
weekend we watch another system off the coastline. this one moving towards us and actually get additional areas of rain. notice a little blue here, snow at the high elevations in the central portions of the sierra. good. some of the mountains outside l.a., enhancement of rain too. rainfall amounts over the next three days total. highest totals, highest peaks in the mountains. almost two inches possible. beneficial rain. didn't get a lot of rain this winter season in areas of southern california. rare to get it in the middle of april, what we'll do, and in and around l.a., half inch to an inch. northwest, still be the mississ as florida. warm today also in california. >> i'll take the 79 in reading, too. >> pretty nice in california,
