[ cheers and applause ] so my wife's from there. we go there to see her family. we've done it many times. we go over, we get the fastest four cylinder van we can find. [ laughter ] and load it up and we have to -- we go house to house and throw all the kids and all of us are in one room and we work it out. i think last time, we slept, the five of us, on a couple of twin beds. [ laughter ] every place we're at. >> jimmy: that's living the dream. yeah, absolutely, yeah. are you used to brazil now? have you gone back and forth so many times, you're used to it? >> well, we've been there four or five times. >> jimmy: yeah. >> so i haven't been that -- that often, but we've covered almost all of brazil. >> jimmy: yeah. >> we mainly for the holidays have to get back to see her family on her dad's side, her mom's side. the kids are very excited to go. the kids are taking portuguese
classes the last week. they already know a lot of portuguese, but they've been taking portuguese classes fivehours a day for the last week in prep for going on this trip. [ laughter ] they speak much better portuguese than i do. >> jimmy: yeah, but now -- well now they're prepping. that's amazing, how old are they again? >> eight, six, and three. >> jimmy: wow. >> you've got three and two? >> jimmy: i got three and two. >> yeah. >> jimmy: and, they barely speak english. [ laughter ] but we're working -- we're thinking about portuguese. [ laughter ] i was thinking about it. i was thinking about it. we have a long way to go. oh, my gosh. they say, "santa, santa." that's all they say right now. [ laughter ] very similar kids, yeah, to your kids. how's your mom doing? every time we're here, we talk your mom, man. how's she doing? >> mom -- mom's great. i don't know how she does it. i can't keep up with her. >> jimmy: yeah. >> she lives on controversy. i think that's why she's 84, going on 44. see, if there's a smooth situation, she throws a a jackknife in it right away. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: she loves that. >> just to try something out. >> jimmy: just to get the hard -- >> she goes to bed, even when we're partying, she goes to bed an hour after i do and she wakes up an hour before. every single time.
>> jimmy: 84? >> yeah. >> jimmy: god, that's fantastic. >> she's real -- >> jimmy: and, how is she with the kids? >> she's great with the kids. i mean, she doesn't negotiate and debate things as much as camila, my wife, and i do with the kids. >> jimmy: yeah, no? >> no, no. she you know -- you're talking to your kids, you try to explain things, and they have a stance, and they disagree, you give them a a little time, some time to show their side and you discuss it. >> jimmy: cool. >> not with my mother. no, it's immediately, "because i said so." [ laughter ] and the "but why's," there's no, "but why." >> jimmy: yeah, but why? >> no, no, no, no. it's over, you're out the door, it already happened the way she wanted it to happen. it's over. [ laughter ] so the conversations are shorter but they look at her as grandma, but they know they can't get away with anything with her. >> jimmy: yeah, because i said so. absolutely, yeah. >> because i said so, that's why. >> jimmy: yeah, exactly that's why. and does your mom speak portuguese? >> absolutely not. >> jimmy: no, no, not at all yeah. [ laughter ] i was thinking maybe, they go, the kids think about that. >> yeah. >> jimmy: as a way that -- yeah you could negotiate something there. >> true. >> jimmy: we just saw the clip here, and man, it looks so fun, "gold." >> yeah. >> jimmy: that's a character right there. >> kenny wells. >> jimmy: kenny wells.

[ laughter ] >> jimmy: that's fantastic. and you'll see, as the movie goes on, you just fall in love with this guy. i -- kenny wells, man. >> that tiger scene, just real quick, if you know anything about production, film takes three, four months to make. very clever, the producers scheduled that, me touch the tiger scene, the very last scene to shoot in the movie. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: they don't have any confidence. that's not fair. >> and i'm a producer on it and i even looked at myself in that
mirror and i said, "that was pretty clever," because if something happens -- >> jimmy: yeah. >> to number one on the call sheet, we've already got all this other stuff done. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: we can still release the movie. absolutely. >> that is smart. >> jimmy: but you -- that was a a real tiger, not a cgi thing? >> no, that's a real tiger. i was not acting in that scene. i was scared [ bleep ]. [ cheers and applause ] ♪ >> jimmy: i'm so happy for you. i'm so happy. welcome back to the show. >> thank you. this is home. i'm so thankful and excited to be here. >> jimmy: i'm so happy to see you again. and man, oh man, these are two giant movies that you're in. >> yeah, they are very special. >> jimmy: congratulations on this, and great work in both of them. >> thank you so much. >> jimmy: normally, when you're here, you're singing. >> i know.

[ laughter ] but it's fun to have you here because when i get into the whole -- the movies and all that stuff, but you have a a really fun story about when you were singing, basically, kind of got you fired from the your job. >> oh, yes. >> jimmy: yeah. >> you want to bring that up. yes, i was working at office depot. >> jimmy: absolutely. >> believe it or not. >> jimmy: yeah. >> you know, pushing ink, and -- >> jimmy: pushing ink. [ laughter ] >> and, yeah. i was living in a boarding house with six other girls. >> jimmy: wow. >> i couldn't afford my own apartment, selling cds independently, and i didn't have a computer. i couldn't afford it. >> jimmy: oh, so you got to office depot. >> so office depot, you guys have, like, 200 computers on display, and i used one to respond back to a fan who had seen me perform in the library steps in the auc. shout out to morehouse film in clark in atlanta, and -- >> jimmy: wait, so you performed on -- what did you say? >> yes. >> jimmy: the library steps? >> yes, jimmy. i used to perform on library
stairs. i just love performing, not for money. >> jimmy: so it's during the day or night? what, what did you -- >> during the day, you know? >> jimmy: yes. >> for all the kids, you know, getting those refund checks. [ light laughter ] and they just -- no, i never did it for money. i wanted to know was my material good enough. and so a long story short, i responded back to someone who was like, "i loved you. i saw you on the library steps. i was one of three people." [ laughter ] "and you were amazing." >> jimmy: you were like, "i know you. yeah, you walked by me." [ laughter ] >> yeah, and so then -- >> jimmy: they're cooler than other people, yeah. >> yeah, the voice of god just came, office depot, "janelle robinson to the back." and i go back, and my boss said, "listen, we're going to make this easy for you. you're fired." >> jimmy: yeah. >> "go do what you love. you don't want to be here." >> jimmy: yeah. >> and so i took my little -- >> jimmy: "you can't use office computers to respond to" -- >> right, who told you? >> jimmy: i should probably get off the microphone, yeah. >> yeah, so -- >> jimmy: you can't use office computers. [ laughter ] >> it was just -- it was the big crime, i guess, i committed. but luckily, it led me to staying focused. >> jimmy: i would have done the same thing.
>> yeah, staying focused on what i loved. >> jimmy: why not? you got all those computers, yeah. it's not like you're taking it away from anyone else. >> come on, man. >> jimmy: but man, oh man, let's talk about this. >> okay. >> jimmy: you're doing "hidden figures." you do "moonlight." you've gotten -- got to know the obamas. but i saw you at the white house. >> no! >> jimmy: i see you at the white house more than i've seen any celebrity at the white house. >> aw. >> jimmy: that's got to feel amazing. >> it is absolutely an honor to know the president and the first lady. aw, i love that photo. they are the sweetest people, and, you know, i'm just so thankful that we have had a a leader like president obama. >> jimmy: yeah. >> he has brought people together. [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: absolutely. >> he's a man of the people. he's helped women, you know, minorities, lgbtq community. he's really for those who are oftentimes marginalized and really don't feel like they have a voice. and, i was just so honored to be a part of his first term and campaign and help out and help push someone who is a true visionary and truly does care about the well-being of this
country. >> jimmy: yeah. and you got to -- you got to screen one of these -- of your films, "hidden figures," which is a very important film. >> yes. >> jimmy: fantastic. i didn't even know the story at all. >> nor did i. >> jimmy: yeah, you played mary jackson. she was the first african-american female engineer at nasa. yeah. >> absolutely, aerospace engineer. >> jimmy: yeah, and helped get john glenn into orbit. >> yes. >> jimmy: and i didn't know the story at all, and you're fantastic in it. i was like, "janelle monae!" this is so good. >> yes. you know, a lot of people don't know this, but i studied acting. i went to the american musical and dramatics academy right here in new york, fresh from kansas to new york. and, i've always had an appreciation for just story telling. >> jimmy: yeah. >> i never looked at myself as just a singer or just an actor, but someone who wants to tell these universal, unique, untold stories in the most unforgettable ways. so, when i read the script, i was just moved, you know. i didn't know about these women. >> jimmy: no. >> nobody knew about these
