oranges. emergen-c transforms more than just water. highway 101 is shutdown on the peninsula. dozens are blocking the road to protest a new york grand jury disetion. it is not to indict a white police officer in the chokehold death of an unarmed black man. good evening. i'm larry beil in for dan ashley. >> i'm ama-daetz. >> don't shoot. >> hands up. >> protesters blocked both directions of the 101 off university avenue inlo alto in reaction to the grand jury's decision. stanford university students organized tonight's protest. >> we can no longer not be heard and not be seen. business cannot go on as usual. this is something that needs to be seen and heard and

everyone needs to know so everyone can have an impact on it. >> the chp says up to 150 people walked on to 101 near university avenue. the drivers also tweeted pictures as they sat motionless after the protest stopped traffic. the highway patrol and palo alto police then moved in and cleared the freeway. traffic is moving once again. protests also broke out in san francisco and oakland tonight. >> whose street? >> our street. >> the voices of marchers filled the air in downtown oakland as they moved toward city hall around 9:00. a few bottles have been thrown at officers, but it has remained mostly peaceful. it is much different than last week's ferguson, missouri decision. sky 7hd also followed protesters as they marched through several oakland neighborhoods including college avenue and broadway. this is the insurance department that lead to garner's death.

he suffered breathing problems as police restrained him. it happened on staten island in july. they believed he was selling cigarettes illegally at the time. the head of new york's police officer union called garner's death quote, tragic and say it resulted from garner resisting arrest. garner's widow believes charges should have been filed in the death of her 43-year-old husband. jay he should not have been killed in that way. he shouldn't have been killed in anyway. he should be here celebrating christmas and thanksgiving and everything else with his children and grandchildren. >> in new york, they say his final words, "i can't breathe" as they move down manhattan. they staged a die in in grand central terminal. and now to the weather where things are beginning to quiet down after strong storms brought heavy rain and lightning. abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking what

is left of the storm with live doppler 7hd. >> let me show you live doppler 7hd and you can see where we are still watching some showers develop. now they have been scattered in nature, but there have been some brief pockets of moderate rain. as you look here, there is one right around highway 1. as i clear this out, i do want to show you where it is heading. it is really poufing toward the south city area. it will be in san bruno and millbrae in the next 15 to 20 minutes. we are seeing some pretty good returns and we will be watching from the showers from oakland to lafayette and concord. don't be surprised if they pop up anywhere. the last 24 hours, rain totals over five inches in ben loman. most areas in the one to two-inch category. when you look at 48-hour totals this is impressive. over half a foot of rain in lomand. novato is close to that. 3.4 in san francisco and just updated these and oakland is close to three inches and same

thing for livermore, close to two and a half in san jose. we have a couple more systems coming. i will be back with the timing of those. >> see you in a few minutes. the storms were so intense the rainwater pooling on rooftops posed a serious danger. in antioch a roof collapsed almost coming down on a mother and her two toddlers. alan wang has the story. >> there was a hole up there so i could see outside of the building. all of the rain was coming in. >> she says her 1-year-old was sitting on a chair and a 2-year-old was running around a the coffee table and the rain was pouring down outside. >> i heard this noise and when i looked around my roof was hanging. >> she quickly got on the phone to call maintenance, but it was too late. >> the whole thing caved in. the wood on there fell. one piece dropped on the computer and hit the tv and cracked in half.

>> the damage was confined to the living room so the family is still able to live there. she is trying to get over the fact that she and her children narrowly escaped injury. >> it was scary. >> a leak in the roof allowed rain to pool up in the ceiling until the sudden weight of the water caused it to collapse. in antioch, alan wang, abc7 news. >> and police are blaming the rain for causing this nasty eight-car pile up in san jose this afternoon. it snarled traffic for hours on the 280 freeway just north of highway 101. no serious injuries reported. >> near redwood city, a tree fell and a phone cable and power lines causing a big mess. police shutdown roads while they made repairs. and just outside hillsboro, a tree came down on golf course drive. this is inside the golden gate national recreation area. the tree ended up bringing down a section of fencing there as well.

this massive sinkhole opened up in san francisco, and it could take weeks to fix. take a look at our big it is. a driver's tire fell on the asphalt and it caused even are month damage. there was more damage throughout the bay area. abc7 news reporter tiffany wilson has the story. >> reporter: too much rain too fast rendered this san francisco pump useless. you can see the water line on the curtains and inside the drier. at 17 and folsom employees waited through similar flooding. the damage estimate in the tens of thousands. >> all of the food and everything that touched the water. everything is garbage now. >> the water submerged three cars and prompted uncomfortable phone calls to their owners. nearby businesses say this is the the fourth flood in seven years. >> it takes one downpour and the sewer system gets completely flooded. >> even sandbags didn't help.

>> somehow it finds its way to get in here. >> drivers couldn't find a way to get much of anywhere. traffic at a stand still for hours. those crossing the new bay bridge dodged potholes. petaluma drivers got caught in deep water and cars stalled out and required a tow. a downed eucalyptus tree totaled this t-bird. the homeowners crawled out the front door as the tree swiped their house. they lost one window. >> things fell our way today. >> the santa cruz mountains saw mud and rock slides. despite all of the damage, some locals aren't complaining. >> it is very good for california. throughout the whole state. i am happy. >> these wind surfers seem to agree. in san francisco, tiffany wilson, abc7 news. parts of the north bay are drying out and cleaning up tonight after torrential rains brought flooding and an epic morning commute that no one will forget. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard is live in mill valley where the water is finally

receding. cornell? >> yes, larry things are looking much better. this is el monty bowel vaferred vaferred -- boulevard. as you can see it is still underwater, but slowly receding. it is a reminder of how wet, wild and dangerous things got on the freeway this morning. >> it was very, very confused. oh my gosh. >> christina meyer is gassing up after running on empty this morning. she and thousands of drivers were caught in commuter chaos. sky 7hd was over marin county when four lanes of southbound 101 flooded in marin city. it created traffic gridlock for miles. a 30-minute drive into san francisco turned into a two-hour ordeal for tom harbinson. >> it was a long trip. >> pretty frustrating. >> we got some flooding calls and we had calls underwater. firefighters were busy in the deluge.

11:40 pm a peninsula fire chief is in jail after prosecutors claimed he used phony names to set up credit cards to get cash. he is now on leave from the central san mateo county fire department. the mercury news reported that his wife left the country after being charged with similar crimes. an acting chief is leading the agency. he survived an 11-story fall. next on abc7 news, the window washer who plummeted from the building nearly two weeks ago. tonight we will hear from his family for the first time. it is a story you will see only on abc7 news. >> and this guy lost a bet and won over the internet. the dance video is

latest on a window washer who fell from an 11-story building in downtown san francisco nearly two weeks ago. pedro perez is still in critical condition at sf general, but he is able to speak. his daughter spoke exclusively to abc7 news reporter lyanne melendez. >> reporter: he knows his trade well, washing windows for the past 15 years. >> i know he wouldn't do anything to put himself in danger and risk him not being here with us anymore. >> his family doesn't know what went wrong the morning perez fell from the roof of this belling and landing on this moving car. he was 58 and helped by several pedestrians. minutes later a confused co-worker who mistakenly thought perez was dead called the family to say he had passed. monica perez is his 19-year-old daughter who didn't want her face shown on

tv. >> when you found out he was alive at least there was hope. >> i started shaking. i was just so happy we didn't have to tell my sisters that he had passed away. >> the moving car he landed on helped break his fall. since the november 21st accident perez has had several operations. >> his pelvic area was completely shattered. and he also had internal bleeding. >> while he broke his right arm in several places, his legs and back were not broken and according to the family he suffered no major head injury. >> he is not on the breathing machine anymore. he can breathe on his own. >> he is trying to talk? >> he is talking. >> the family reached out to us because they need help. while he has insurance, they have not contacted the family directly. that's until today when we called the union.

during our interview a rep called to offer help. >> we are going to put him on disability. it is in progress. >> a family remembers watching the accident on tv in disbelief. >> it is a really big fall. >> how did somebody fall from that and still survive? >> that's what a lot of us are asking tonight. late today the union put out this statement. we are working to verify any compensation that pedro may be owed for these injuries. his colleagues are also collecting money for his family during these difficult times. in the newsroom, lyanne melendez, abc7 news. >> perez is very lucky to be alive. and on the lighter side, hilarious proof that some guys take fantasy football very seriously. ♪ i -- i'm gonna swing >> he lost to his fantasy football league and the stakes

we are still seeing scattered showers around pacifica. highway 1 and light to moderate in intensity at times. around san francisco you can see scattered around third street and in the east bay i am going to take you down to street level here, berkeley and emeryville and seeing some rain. now, the sierra has seen some snow. it has tapered. but north star sent in this picture. 13 inches in the last 24 hours. here is another beautiful view from kirkwood where they have gotten a couple inches of snow. great to see all of the snow. wonderful to see the rain recently boost our season to date. we are well above normal in san jose. moffett field at 190% of average. 137 for san francisco and over six inches for the season. oakland is 121 and livermore 127. you can see even sacramento and ukiah have gone beyond the normal. we need a lot more to get rid of the drought though. the temperatures right now are in the 50s and 60s. here is what you need to look out for in the morning. while it looks nice from the

exploratorium camera we have some areas of fog forming. scattered showers into tomorrow. more rain on friday and we are looking at another chance sunday night into monday. here is the cold front that came through. we will not forget that storm, that's for sure. moist flow continues. the southwesterly flow will keep those showers going. at least through tomorrow morning. tonight look out for the scattered showers and tomorrow at faff:00 a.m. start of the commute you will see damp roadways along with some areas of fog. give yourself plenty of time for the commute. it is dry, just cloud cover. you will see sunny breaks tomorrow, by the way. the next system brings in light to moderate rain and starts at noon on friday. the evening rush, and the evening get away will include pockets of moderate rain and even the possibility of heavier rain coming in. at this point it looks moderate and weakens by the time it gets in. showers linger and then it is all done until the next system of course. rainfall totals are right through saturday morning. this includes the showers for

the next day or so. north bay up to an additional one inch. most lower elevations a 10th to half an inch. so nothing like the storm that has hit us in the last 48 hours. tomorrow morning make sure you have your umbrellas with you. you may need them. allow the extra time. 50s to start off. the afternoon highs will be in the 60s primarily with a few lingering showers possible. very isolated in nature. accu-weather seven-day forecast, showers giving way to a rainy friday afternoon and evening going into saturday morning. the next system on sunday night into monday, i should let you know that ben lomand got 10 inches of rain in the last five days. almost a foot. and san francisco more than four inches. this is great news. >> it really is. thank you, sandhya. >>
