if you've lived in this area for any amount of time, you know about the wind warnings in washoe valley. they're not uncommon. but now, vehicles more than nine feet tall will get more notice about the warnings. those are the vehicles most impacted by the wind. kolo 8 news now's terri russell is live and joins us from washoe valley with more on this story. this is one of the new signs that alerts truckers to +not go any farther if the lights are flashing. signs that alerts truckers to +not go any farther if the lights are flashing. they can easily take a right hand turn and take old 395 and parellel the roadway. just one example of how these signs will help drivers make good choices. this wind turbine overlooking washoe valley is hardly moving at all. but come tomorrow, it will be a different story, and a chance for nevada department of transportation to see how the new wind warning signs are working. meg ragonese/nevada department of transportation: unfortunately, just in the past few weeks even, we have seen, a few trucks roll over in washoe
times when it was very clearly vehicles. so we have a series of wind warning signs, running along i- 580 from the south reno area all the way through washoe valley to north carson city. several wind monitors are located throughout washoe trip the signs when the winds blow more than 35-miles an hour. that will be just a warning. sometimes high profile vehicles are prohibited from using i-580 through washoe valley --when those drivers ignore, or just don't understand, this can be the outcome. picture of truck rolling over hold to 1 minute truckers can use alternate 395 which runs parellel to i-580 through washoe valley. new illuminated signs have been installed on that roadway which can change the speed limit to fifty miles an hour.

a brief period of heavy precipitation is expected with the front, bringing winter driving conditions to the high sierra wednesday evening, lake tahoe before midnight, and western nevada foothills by thursday morning. not much accumulation is expected with this storm for valley floors of western nevada. skies will start to clear by late thursday, with mild, dry weather returning through early next week. -jeff cam 3 - wx mic nevada has joined an accord that includes 17 states committed to the growth of renewable energy. governor brian sandoval announced the "governors' accord for a new energy future" this morning. the agreement allows participating states to more easily share renewable energy across state lines as well as share ideas to continue to develop green energy sources.
governor sandoval this afternoon. we'll have that coming up on kolo 8 news now at 6-30. police arrested a man on murder charges, after a stabbing in south reno. 32-year-old michael robbins was arrested in sparks sunday night, for allegedly driving a stolen car. during the investigation, s-p-d learned robbins may have stabbed a man at an apartment in south reno. reno police went to an apartment in the 100 block of malone lane, where they found 43- year-old patrick drahos-- who had been fatally injured. homicide detectives say robbins admitted killing drahos. ### a sparks man is facing charges of child neglect and firng a gun inside a home. police called to a home on keogh drive shortly before three this morning. gordon mellinger was arrested. police say he has a history of mental illness. two women and two teenage girls were inside the home at the time. police convinced one of the women over the phone to get to the back yard... where they
to safety. she told officers mellinger had fired two shots inside the home. mellinger eventually came out of the house and was arrested. nobody was hurt in the incident. four people are out of their home, after a duplex fire in stead. it happened around 8-30 last night-- at a home on stead boulevard. one man was hospitalized, for smoke inhalation. officials say two dogs and a cat died in the fire. the cause is under investigation. ### time is slipping away with a possible narrowing of the presidential field following saturday's republican primary in south carolina. democrats are gearing up for the nevada caucuses. and as lana zak reports all the candidates are hitting party loyalists with their message. sanders: "we have come along way here in south carolina. i think we are going to surprise people here on election day." it was back to their bases for republicans and democrats on the campaign trail. sot - bernie sanders the top 1/10th of 1% owns almost as much wealth as the bottom

fanning the flames of conspiracy theorists, by suggesting supreme court justice antonin scalia may have been the victim of foul play. lana zak, abc news, new york. two republican candidates, have announced visits to nevada-- ahead of next week's caucuses. former florida governor jeb bush will be in las vegas sunday, and then he'll make his way to reno on monday. he'll hold a town hall meeting at 6 o'clock, monday night-- at huff-acre huffaker elementary school. if you want to attend, you'll need to register online. ### senator ted cruz is also coming to nevada. his visit includes eight different events. the campaigning begins sunday afternoon in pahrump, and stops in reno monday evening. on tuesday, caucus day, cruz will make stops in fernley, minden, and carson city.
candidates events at kolo-tv-dot-com. ### the empty chair in the u-s supreme did not go unnoticed today. black wool was draped on the chair of justice antonin scalia, and on the bench, in front of his seat. a black drape was also been hung, over the courtroom doors. a public viewing for scalia is set for friday. his funeral will be held, on saturday. ### nevada rancher cliven bundy won't be getting released from jail. a federal judge says bundy should stay behind bars because he's a danger to the community -and a risk for failing to show up for future court dates. today judge janice stewart ruled bundy shouldn't be released ahead of trial because "that is likely the last the government will see of him." bundy's charges stem from an armed 2014 standoff with federal officials trying to round up cattle grazing illegally near his ranch northeast of las vegas. bundy was arrested last week when he arrived in oregon to support his sons, who are accused of leading a
at a national wildlife refuge. #### the california high- speed rail authority is warning of possible cost overruns, on the first segment of the bullet train, not long after construction began. today, finance officials told rail board members the project could need another 150 million dollars for the first 29-mile segment near fresno. the project has been plagued by delays-- in acquiring land, and a slow start to design work. the bullet train is currently projected to cost 68-billion dollars... but officials are expected to release an updated business plan soon. ### nevada has been awarded nearly 5-million dollars to improve public housing. the u-s department of housing and urban development is giving more than 1-point-8 billion dollars to public housing authorities all across the u-s. the money could be used to replace roofs, replace old plumbing and electrical systems, and make energy efficient upgrades. an earthquake in inyo county shook several

another recall involving takata airbags. general motors is recalling 200-thousand saabs and saturns to replace the air bag inflators. affected models include the saab 9-3 from 2003 to 2011 and the saab 9-5 from 2010 and 2011. it also includes the saturn astra-- from 2008 and 2009. this is just the latest in several recalls, involving the airbags, which can explode in a crash, sending shrapnel at drivers and passengers. ### adults won't be the only ones driving teslas. bit later than usual this year. the i-r-s is taking longer to process returns in an effort to fight identity theft. tax refund theft, is becoming a major problem in recent years... with thieves filing fraudulent returns to claim refunds. so this year the tax agency is taking extra steps to verify a return-- is legitimate. the i-r-s has not released details about what those extra measures are. ### a nevada congressman is pushing to make sure emergency medical teams keep the ability to administer lifesaving medicine in the field. joe heck says the drug enforcement agency wants -certain drugs? to be used only in hospitals; all because of fears over how they are administered. kolo 8 news now washington correspondent peter zampa spoke with congressman heck about a bill allowing paramedics to continue to use these drugs.
able to do the job they're trained to do, and practice the skills they're trained to practice. heck was an ems medical director in las vegas, and before that an emergency physician. he says the current law states that medical directors can create standing orders that apply to emergency situations. if a patient meets certain criteria, a substance can be administered in the field. he says the d.e.a. wants to take that ability away from paramedics, saying they can no longer use controlled substances, even under these standing orders from medical directors. heck says this will hinder a paramedic's ability to give quality care to a patient. he says this is especially an issue in rural areas, where a patient could be in an ambulance for a long time without proper care. rep joe heck: "there's a

morning of december 7, 1941 in pearl harbor... petty officer first class peachee was going about his duties as a butcher on the dock next to his assigned ship... the u-s-s rigel . peachee was physically unscathed in the attack but for some reason the navy sent a telegram to his foster family in indiana stating he was missing. in december of 2014 he told me about the shock his family received when he re-united with them. "they said it can't be you. i said well why not? well you were reported dead at pearl harbor." nats of vollies his wife evelyn received the flag and thanks from a grateful nation
and the last remaining pearl harbor survivor from northern nevada... 94 year -old robert lloyd... remembered his brother in arms. robert lloyd, pearl harbor survivor, " very dedicated, involved in all of the things he possibly be involved in." peachee campaigned the state legislature to authorize a special license plate for pearl harbor survivors. he signed a copy for me in 2014 and it hangs above my desk. as peachee family said their goodbyes... lloyd to come don't forget his friend and the sacrifices made by brave men and women on that fateful day in december.
