and it's winter. we can't find a rain drop. nothing out there right now. a little fog reported in the santa rosa area. temperatures in the 30s and 40s. >> and as expected, so far everything is very quiet on the roads. i noticed fewer cars driving in this morning. people are starting to take holiday time off. there are delays in the far right lane. we have a little bit of over night road work out there. >> i'm not a traffic expert but my guess is it's going to be a slow week for you. >> i hope. knock on wood. this morning the waiting list to adopt an injured puppy in san francisco is growing. the dog was found on a trash sorting conveyer belt. don knapp shows us had it not been for one employee this story would have had a different ending. >> reporter: 24 hours earlier this pup was on a conveyer belt going through the trash

separator. much like a scene from toy story 3, she was heading toward the end of her short life. >> employees stopped the belt and called us. >> reporter: a truck like this on is route picked up a recycle can with a pup inside and dumped it into the back. >> they drove back and the many other collections they collected, they traveled back to their site, dumped it into a chute. the chute goes down for processing. and they're hand sorting the trash. and outcomes this little gem here. >> reporter: gem has to cover from injury to see her back legs. probably from the truck load of trash. >> just to see this puppy on a conveyer belt with a bunch of trash. >> reporter: if the pup's owner doesn't come forward she'll be

put up for adoption. probably within a few weeks. all ready there are people on a waiting list. >> how could you not want this dog? look at her. >> reporter: we're told gem son the mend and heading for a happy ending. don knapp, kpix 5. >> animal welfare is trying to figure out which truck gem was on, coming into the facility. religious leaders echo pleas from the family of 3-year- old jahi mcmath to keep her on life support. >> we say to this hospital and to this community, when you have done wrong as doctors you need to pause and you need not to exert your right. this is not about money. this is about human beings. >> family and supporters gathered in prayer. the teenager is now on life support at children's hospital in oakland after complications

from tonsillectomy. her mother has been by her side as the girl remains breathing on a ventilator. >> there's so many people that come to pray for her that we never met and i know they believe that god has the final say so on my daughter. >> they have yet to determine that she's brain dead. but they will have a urologist examine the girl before a final decision is made. a 24-year-old man was found in a lot on edgewater drive. he was shot once and was pronounced dead at the scene. police have not released his name and there's no information on any suspects. a uc berkeley official is killed in a freak accident. steve moranza was biking along the greenway when he swerved to avoid a skate border and crashed into a fence. his heart stopped and paramedics were unable to revive him. he was an assistant manager for

the university's office of environment health and safety. a scandal conned a vallejo mother. the suspect called claiming to have a warrant for her arrest and threatened to take her kids. when the woman called the number back, she got the police department's automated phone system. the scammer had somehow replaced the phone number with vallejo pd. if you want health coverage undercover california, you have to sign up by the end of the day. thousands are flocking to the website daily. there's one particular group that has been slow in signing up. >> for the 10s of thousands waiting for health coverage, the holy grail is a week away. >> do it online. go to a local insurance agent. a county officer. >> you can also call the cover

california phone center. but there can be a half hour wait. enrollment doubled from october to november. and last week 23,000 people were enrolling per day. unfortunately older californians are enrolling at a higher rate than younger. insurers need a higher percentage of younger and healthier enrollees to make the policy's financially viable. but cover california officials say they expected more older people to sign up off the bat. those with preexisting conditions who have been waiting for insurance they could afford. >> every californian that does the right thing to get in by the 23rd, we're going the to get them across the finish line. >> they offer plans from near lay dozen different insurers to learn more go to and search cover california. it's time for a peak at weather. man, it's nice out there.

>> it has been unbelievable. temperatures running a good five to ten degrees above the average. one thing that's suffering is air quality. because high pressure is building in overhead. that's what we're seeing today. that ridge has been a semipermanent feature for the better part of fall and now into winter. we have high pressure overhead. the clouds just disappear as they run into that ridge. so if you're headed out the door today, this afternoon, hazy sunshine. temperatures above the average. mid 60s in parts of the bay and the valley. low 60s toward the coastline. temperatures are going to be running on the warm side for this time of year. 65 in livermore. 65 in san jose. 64 in redwood city. and 62 in san francisco. more on your holiday forecast coming up in a few minutes. right now a check of traffic with elizabeth. holiday traffic, traffic is looking good this morning. if you're traveling 880. you won't have as much company as you're used to seeing this time of the morning. just in the northbound lanes. and you can see the drive times

in the green as well. some of the road work we often see around the downtown oakland access is not there. cal trans is not doing anything out there this morning. blocking lanes. to the bay bridge, the toll plaza looks good but from the incline out towards the island, various lanes blocked. until about 5:00 this morning. for the next 20 minutes or so. here's a live look at sensors through the altamont pass and the livermore valley. drive times will go down a little bit from the usual norms. we've been seeing them tick down each day as we get closer and closer to christmas. santa rosa, here's a live look at southbound 101. the live traffic sensors. 59 miles per hour. there maybe some patchy fog, some visibility maybe an issue if you're traveling along 101. and bart so far, all trains more than 20, all on time. that's your latest traffic. back to you guys.

4:37, an unusual move in the wake of a massive security breech of target. why chase bank. >> it's not everyday you see a bank open for business on sunday. but chase bank opened 1/3 of branches nationwide to deal with the target day hacking troubles and help customers like rachel. >> there's a risk there. and you should be looking at your account. >> the move comes one day after jp morgan chase told 2 million customers it would limit their spending during christmas week. 100-dollars in cash withdraws per day. 300 in total purchases per day for anyone who used a chase debit card at target during the recent security breech. >> luckily i don't have a lot of christmas presents to buy. so it's all about me. i have other cards too. >> target announced that up to 40 million cards were compromised from thanksgiving to december 15th. the second largest data breech

there were long lines at th milwaukee shoe store -- whe just eight pai once again violence breaks out over air jordan shoes. there was a long line at a milwaukee shoe store where eight pairs of the shoes were up for sale. two men in their 20s were injured. and both shooters were arrested. this is a store in stockton where a fight broke out over the same shoes. winter weather is making a mess in parts of the country. but elsewhere it feels like spring. an ice storm is blasting the

midwest. knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of people and tieing up travel. but over in new york, people are enjoying t-shirt weather. and some record high temperatures for this time of year. sate bizarre mix of weather that's left several people dead and an out break of flooding, ice storms, and tornadoes. other people have been dealing with spring like temperatures. the past few days have brought a bizarre mix of weather extremes. shoppers of these outlet stores stood in awe watching sheets of ice slide off the roof. luckily nobody was injured. temperatures are expected to be up to 25 degrees. colder than normal through parts of the central plains. ice thick enough to skate off covers this driveway. the real problem though, ice and snow on trees. tearing down branches and knocking out power to more than 1 : 4 million homes and businesses. in hughes arkansas the national weather service confirmed an ef

2 tornado ripped up the roof of a barn. killing one woman and injuring others. flooding in kentucky killed five people over the weekend. including three people who drowned when a car drove into the water. two people were able to get out of the car. the lake effect enhanced snowfall in the upper midwest. but it's not necessarily a problem. look at the pictures from middleton wisconsin, and get a load of this weather extreme. a record breaking 70 degrees in new york city sunday despite the winter warnings up state. i'm andrew spencer reporting. all that wild weather could have an impact on your travel plans no matter where you're going across the country, sfo, other bay area airports have been very busy and there have been some delays so far. one passenger told us she left a lot earlier than usual to keep it safe. >> we got to the airport 2.5 hours before the flight was to leave. >> if you're flying out,

picking up, dropping off, check with your airline before you head out. i know you'll be in wisconsin christmas night. >> i'm hoping things will clear up in the next few days. around here it's looking clear. >> very nice. i like the weather. it's always different. always unusual. this is no exception. we continue to see high pressure sit overhead. and the temperatures running well above the average. maybe five to ten degrees above the average. the jet stream is going toll the north. that keeps us high and dry. plenty of hazy sunshine. it's been declared by the bay air quality management, another spare the air day. a sunny and dry weather ahead through christmas day. things will stay dry and probably into the new year as well. the jet stream staying north of the bay area. they're getting rainfall. but nothing here. maybe a couple high clouds by tomorrow. and that's it. we'll keep things dry around the state. 65 degrees and hazy into

sacramento. 68 in fresno. and 67 in monterey bay. computer models showing you skies stay mostly clear with the exception of high clouds moving across the skies as we head toward tomorrow, that's about it. we're going keep things on the warm side today. 65 degrees in san jose. 64 in redwood city. east bay numbers in the 60s as well and above average. 65 in oakland. 65 in santa rosa. and 62 in daily city. the next couple days right in through christmas we keep things dry and mild and maybe changes over the weekend. partly cloudy skies on saturday. but right now it looks like we stay dry. traffic now with elizabeth. >> and maybe folks that are heading out of town, if you're riding bart to the airport, there are 28 trains. and they're all on time. we'll get you up to work this morning. trains headed toward downtown san francisco are on time as well as those toward the east

bay. here's a live look at 101 traffic. sfo and continuing down into palo alto, no big delays any where you go we're seeing a lot of green. on 280 as well. all the way down into san mateo valley. for silicon valley commuters, this is what it looks like. traffic is lighter than normal for this time of the morning heading towards 101 101 sunnyvale. there's some from the incline towards the island. but it should be picked up within the next 15-10 minutes or so by 5:00. so they should have started that process right about now. here's a live look at westbound highway 4 sensors. highway 4 passed a street towards concord, traffic is moving at the speed limit. that's your latest traffic. back to ewe guys.

4:48, checking future trading this morning. it looks like stocks will stay on a winning track when this week's shortened session gets started in an hour. alexis has the numbers. >> reporter: christmas week should be quiet on wall street. last week stocks skyrocketed. the dow added 42. while the nasdaq climbed 47. apple made a deal with the world's biggest mobile carrier. the state owned carrier is china's largest. with roughly twice the population of the u.s. the iphone 5c and 5s go on sale in china next month. but subscribers can register to buy the phone starting christmas day. apple hopes to sell up to 24 million iphones next year. but the company lost a lot of ground in china. the companies that sell much cheaper smart phones. the price at the pump has gone down. the lundberg survey says the average for a gallon of regular
