beautiful shot of the bay bridge and the bay. it is wednesday, it's february 3rd, good morning. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. we're coming to you live from our exclusive broadcast home inside super bowl city at sens restaurant. we'll have a lot more coming up on super bowl 50. we can guarantee you that. but first how about a little traffic and weather with a backdrop that's second to none. good morning, ladies. >> good morning, everybody. are you a little cold? >> a little bit. it's not that bad. i found invigorating. >> temperatures in the mid-40s right here in san francisco at super bowl city. we do have 46 degrees. but check out livermore at 38 degrees. it's in the high 30s in concord and low 40s in santa rosa. here's the deal today. we'll continue to see the clouds thicken around the bay area and with that, we will see mostly cloudy skies, rain showers will be developing. if we can take a look at our maps. we have currently our high temperatures. the forecast in the 50s up to

60 degrees. let's say good morning to gianna. >> and good morning. it's a great start to your wednesday morning drive. westbound 580 ramp to eastbound 4. that's our only snag roadwork in effect until 5 a.m. let's get a live look at the san mateo bridge this morning. off to a good start. we'll have a complete look at your bay area bridges coming right up. a member of the denver broncos is being sent home after being caught in a prostitution sting in san jose. kpix 5's sharon chin says the rookie from the bay area won't be on the sidelines for super bowl 50 reporter: sources tell kpix 5 that officers detained and questioned rookie safety ryan murphy during a prostitution sting outside a motel 6 on brokaw road. nearby a gas station manager spotted a swarm of police cars. >> within a few minutes we had maybe about i'd say 7 or 8 police cars all unmarked. >> reporter: santa clara county sheriff's deputies say the county's multi-agency human trafficking task force detained

a suspected prostitute when she went to get her purse from a car, officers discovering murphy and list brother in the car. -- and his brother in the car. sources say the brother and woman were cited for a "business relationship." murphy the 23-year-old rookie from oakland was questioned and released. the broncos head coach said. ay freeway. two ca >> reporter: ryan is returning to denver but his status as a practice squad player has not changed at this time. it's part of a bay area-wide crackdown one of several prostitution stings in the neighborhood. >> we have been working with everybody whether it's at the airport, where people have been training to look for the first signs of anybody that might be engaged in human trafficking, all the way to the hotel directors and counselors both here and santa clara on human trafficking. >> reporter: as for murphy's departure, consider what the head coach of the broncos told the team just before they came

to california. be responsible for how you spend your down time. in san jose, sharon chin contribution. some new details on a fatal crash that closed part of an east bay freeway. two cars crashed on 880 in san leandro near washington avenue about 8:30 last night. one of the cars overturned. one person died at the scene. a second taken to eden medical center in castro valley. all southbound lanes were reopened at 10:45. a dr. hadding healthcare officer is recovering this morning after having his neck slashed in a confrontation a homeless person yesterday morning on harrison street in san francisco. kpix 5's andria borba has reaction from lawmakers in the city. [ inaudible ] >> officer down. >> reporter: at the intersection of 80 and essex under the bay bridge, the intersection of two san francisco problems. use of force and homelessness collided. >> we possibly have an officer down. one party was cut in the throat. >> reporter: the initial call

was for someone walking on the ramp when a two-man chp officer team contacted a homeless man. the homeless man slashed the chp officer across the throat with a knife. >> a green jacket and black backpack. >> running down the street and north up 4th street. most of them had their wells out. there were probably 20 with guns drawn at the initial time. >> reporter: this is video of the slashing suspect in cuffs a short time after the chase. >> it was an unprovoked attack and the officer did not have the opportunity to deploy his taser or his firearm. >> reporter: the incident echoes the shooting of mario woods in the bayview in december. he had a knife when san francisco officers surrounded and shot him. officer williams with the chp says, the injured officer is a seven-year veteran of the department. >> something like this wakes you up, jolts you and -- and makes you consider, you know, the consequences of how badly

or how quickly things can go bad. >> reporter: the question of how to deal with homelessness has turned into a game of political hot potato recently. as super bowl spectacle slammed into street-side reality. >> the police department gets a number of complaints every day. they dispatch officers constantly. they do that day to day but it's really been a long-term problem and the mayor knows there's urgency. >> reporter: the suspect in this case has been identified as 44-year-old noel corpuz. he is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and resisting arrest. in san francisco, andria borba, kpix 5. as for the homelessness problem, the city of san francisco will open a shelter out on pier 80 for the homeless for the remainder of the super bowl events. about 150 beds will be available there. homeless advocates complain the location is too remote and few people will likely show up. it is 4:35 right now. let's get another check on weather and traffic and ro, it's a little chilly out here. >> it is certainly a chilly

start to the day. we currently have temperatures in the mid-40s. inland, temperatures in the mid- 30s. we have mostly cloudy skies. this is our hi-def doppler radar. we have all of our sweeps up and running, no rain yet but we have some to the north. there you have the leading edge just off the coastline at eureka. this week we have currently temperatures into the 30s and 40s and we do have a gentle breeze currently out of the east at 8 miles per hour and that adds a wind chill of about 33 degrees. pacific slight imagery indicates that we have a weak system heading this way. you have there the leading edge of the rain. so when can you anticipate that rain? let's take a look at your forecast highs for today. around 3:00 in the afternoon we realize high temperatures all the way up to about 60 degrees. that's when we'll see those temperatures pretty much hang steady with rain beginning in the north sagging to the south. it will continue to rain until about 9:00 so how is that going to impact our weather here at

super bowl city? we'll be on with kpix 5 news at noon, no rain then. rain should begin around midday. temperatures into the mid-50s. we'll tell you just about how much rain to expect coming up a little later in the newscast. and checking the roads right now, as roberta mentioned, the roads are dry. no problems. a live look at conditions as you work your way across the golden gate bridge and traffic is very light out of marin county into san francisco. let's jump over and get a live look at conditions on the san mateo bridge. so far we are looking good. westbound san mateo bridge as you commute out of hayward to foster city an easy 13 minutes to work your way across the span. we are dealing with some roadwork this morning. just a heads up as you work your way through oakland westbound 580 ramp to eastbound 24 that's shut down at least until 5:00. we'll have a look at mass transit coming right up. developing this morning, two santa clara university students have tested positive for a rare form of meningitis. the first student was admitted to the hospital on sunday.

the health department is now working with the university to identify those who may have come in contact with the infected student. university administrators will have a news conference this morning to talk about the cases. and time now for a look at the super bowl countdown clock. look at that! just a little more than four days until the big game in santa clara and, of course, you can watch it sunday, super bowl sunday, right here on kpix 5. your tv home for super bowl 50. tonight's free concerts at super bowl city, singer- songwriter matt nathanson. festivities there will resume at 11:00 this morning. an events this big requires major security especially in santa clara where the game will be played. a stretch of tasman drive in front of levi's stadium is now closed through tuesday. armed officers are patrolling the area. the security force including local police and fbi agents as well as s.w.a.t. teams from departments up and

down the west coast. the department of homeland security is the lead agency there. fbi leads both investigations and tactical assets. for everyone, it is a high pressure week. >> in this line of work there's no margin of error and the people have that expectation of law enforcement. they have a very high expectation. they hold to us a very high standard. so they expect the best whenever it comes to game day. >> kpix 5 security analyst jeffrey harp spent years working with the fbi and dealt are many big events. he says one of the biggest challenges in coordinating all the radios, personnel from all the different agencies so they can stay in communications with each other. public transit in the bay area also has extra security. homeland security has been on patrol at bart stations in san francisco. today at the embarcadero bart station, the transportation security administration will showcase what local and federal officers are doing to keep visitors and commuters safe. meanwhile, the field at levi's

stadium in santa clara is almost ready for the super bowl. yesterday crews were touching up the painted logos on the field, end zones and also the benches. and the influx of football fans is about to get crazier and, of course, louder. christin ayers tells us that's because of who is coming to see the big game reporter: about 1200 private business jets are expecting to come roaring into the bay area between now and super bowl sunday. the brunt of them are going to land right here at oakland airport with its wide open spaces. altogether, about 500 planes are expected to fly into oakland as you can see a few of them already touching down at northfield. at least one business jet is going to be landing every five minutes and that's going to mean the skies will be noisy over parts of oakland, alameda and san leandro. >> typically on a weekday, you see about 10 aircraft, 14 aircraft up in the northfield which is where they operate. after this we'll see probably

about 12 to 15 aircraft per hour departing from the northfield. >> reporter: oakland airport officials have met with the community about the noise and people should know what to expect. lucky for them, all that noise will taper off by monday. and it's not just private jets that will be seeing that increased airport use. they will see a 30% uptick in commercial travel about the same as it would be during an average thanksgiving holiday. at oakland airport, christin ayers, kpix 5. snoop dogg is in town to play some super bowl gigs but he will have to do so without $9,000 worth of equipment. tmz says it was stolen from his rented suv on hayes street in san francisco on monday night. the stolen items are laptops, monitors and digital equipment. another star is added to the super bowl line-up, lady gaga has been tapped to sing the national anthem just before kickoff at 3:30 on super bowl sunday. remember, all this week, our countdown to gold specials

will hold the nation's first primary. candidates for president are now focused on the granite state of new hampshire because in six days, that state will hold the nation's first primary. anne makovec is in our newsroom with the latest on campaign 2016 reporter: good morning? >> the candidates are crisscrossing new hampshire ahead of that crucial vote next tuesday. that's after a bit of an upset for republican donald trump in iowa. his decision to skip the last gop debate may have cost him but he says he would do it

again. he held a fundraiser for veterans instead. trump finished second in iowa on monday behind ted cruz with marco rubio in third. [ pause ] >> i come in second. trump, no good, rubio unbelievable victory. [ laughter ] >> unbelievable. >> we have to go out and convince more people that conservatism is the right approach for measure. i have done that and will do that for america. >> it's a three-way race for republicans and candidates are holding town hall meeting trying to win independents. under new hampshire's primary voting rules the state's undeclared voters those not registered with either democratic or republican party can choose to vote in either party's primary. now, on the democratic side, hillary clinton and bernie sanders neck and neck. clinton beat sanders in iowa by a razor-thin margin. that means she goes to collect 23 delegates and sanders will

win 21. it takes almost 2400 to win the democratic nomination for president. there is a democratic debate set for thursday but sanders' campaign says he won't participate unless clinton agrees to his conditions on future debates. clinton's people says her campaign has met those conditions. live in the newsroom, anne makevoc, kpix 5. talks are planned today for a one-year extension to the oakland raiders lease at the coliseum. team leaders will meet with officials from the oakland- alameda county coliseum authority. earlier this week, raiders owner mark days of said his number one plan is to stay in oakland for the 2016 season. but beyond that, he did not rule anything else out. desperate times at sunnyvale-based yahoo. the internet joined is planning to lay off 1700 workers, or 15% of its workforce, and close three offshore offices and sell off up to $3 billion in assets. the fate of ceo marissa mayer is unclear although she says

radar. not picking up anything. those are the wind turbines outside rio vista. upstream a little light precipitation north of eureka. we are looking from the transamerica pyramid due east. 30s in the area. 40 in san jose. here we go. this is what you need to know on this midweek forecast. we are mostly cloudy. it is cold. we have afternoon and evening showers in the development stages and then unseasonably low for our super weekend. let's get down to business. you have an incoming weak system. we have at this particular time our wind particle map suggesting this area of low pressure is taking the brunt of the activity north of the bay area. but this week's system has a lot of punch to it so we have a high surf advisory in place tonight through 7 a.m. on friday. we have our futurecast so you can anticipate when to expect the rain. there's your morning commute. let's keep going here through lunch hour and there you have

work your way along 101 this morning northbound near san antonio roadblock the right lane. chp is heading to the scene. two cars involved in this accident. they are waiting on tow crews, as well. no word if there are any injuries reported through there. all right, let's jump over to the altamont pass right now. take a look at your commute for those heading out of tracy this morning. westbound 580 we are seeing stop-and-go conditions at least coming way from 205. you are tapping the brakes through there. gets better once you hit the top of the pass towards the dublin interchange. the rest of the bay area is very quiet this morning. here's a look at conditions along the eastshore freeway as you head westbound coming out of berkeley towards the bay bridge. no metering lights right now. things are quiet at the bay bridge toll plaza. clear off westbound 580 and no delays along 24 as you head through orinda this morning. if you want to skip the roads heading into san francisco, use mass transit. it's been busy with all the closures around the area for super bowl city and moscow

center. all mass transit is on time. there's been some edgy super bowl 50 ads. >> there have. and now we are learning one of the most controversial almost didn't make air at all. remember that apple spot from the 1984 super bowl? [ inaudible ] woman runs into a hall of brain-washed people-- and cs >> the high art concept is taking on george orwell's "1984." a woman runs into a hall of brainwashed people and throws a sledgehammer at a screen with a menacing face. it was to show that apple as a defiant brand in a soulless corporate world. >> steve jobs and i were look at it together and said, wow, this is really incredible. the irony, we went to show it to the board of directors and they said this is the worst television commercial i have ever seen.

good morning. it's february 30. 4:54. this is what you can expect today for your midweek forecast. mostly cloudy skies with rain developing. 50s across the board. 60 degrees in san jose. meanwhile east of the bay, numbers will stack up in the mid-50s. north bay numbers with the rain showers there first and spreading to the south. 54 degrees in san rafael. 55 in ukiah. check the roads right now, we have some new information on this accident northbound 101 near san antonio road. left lane is blocked. chp is now on scene. no injuries and no delays because it's still early. we'll have a look at the golden gate coming up. southern california gas company is now facing misdemeanor criminal charges. l.a. county prosecutors say it failed to immediately report a gas leak that's been gushing for 15 weeks. so cal gas said it paid $50 million to try to cap the leak and relocate thousands of residents of porter ranch. the company could be fined

$1,000 a day for air pollution violations. california church-goers duped by a phony priest. lapd says 59-year-old erwin mina scammed parishioners at st. ignatius of loyola parish out of thousands of dollars. the investigation began in june but police say they have evidence of him scamming people back in the 1990s. church-goers are shocked by what he did. >> we give to our priests and church. we want to help out. so i guess, you know, people gave and he took advantage. >> the los angeles archdiocese says they have an office in charge of making sure priests are appropriately credentialed. the parish please is supposed to check with the archdiocese but in this case no one ever did. in fairfield a teenager is accused of crashing his car into a 5-year-old and then speeding away. 19-year-old jefferson tara was

arrested yesterday morning. that crash happened monday on san marcos street. the child is expected to recover from severe injuries. no word on whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash. san jose police have released surveillance video hoping to generate leads after a burglar hit a capitol expressway convenience store twice. the first burglary at the stop and save market took place in june. the sjpd says at least one of the suspects hit the same store january 13th. alcohol, lottery scratchers and cigarettes were among the items stolen. we are live in super bowl city this morning. and, of course, security measures have been amped up significantly in the bay area from san francisco to santa clara. we'll tell you all about it. i'm kiet do live at santa clara university where two students now have meningitis. what the county health department is doing to keep this from becoming a full-blown outbreak. ,,
