students from harvey milk civil rights academy will honor people who have died of aids writing their names in chalk here along castro street. yesterday world leaders gathered to openworld aids day to show how far we have come and the work yet to be done. >> we are motivated to fight aids because we know that every child deserves the care, every person deserves the treatment, and all vulnerable groups deserve protection. from stigma and abuse. we know that hatred and bigotry spread disease and as the founders of this movement taught, silence equals death. >> now, later on this morning, there will be a huge gathering at the national aids memorial in golden gate park. this is the gathering there

san francisco. san jose waking up to the mid- 40s also mid-40s in redwood city. temperatures today into the mid- 50s at the seashore and into the bay and peninsula. otherwise, low 60s around the rim of the bay. to the low 60s away from the bay. pretty similar conditions for your friday. high pressure continues to build in pretty similar conditions again for your saturday. then this is interesting. we have a cold front that will roll through the bay area beginning on sunday. it will increase our cloud cover and will usher in some cooler air mass. check out monday through wednesday. those are high temperatures. only into the 50s. we have the complete forecast coming up at 18 after the hour. right now let's send it over to roqui. >> good morning, everybody. let's take a look at mass transit throughout the area. bart, ace 1 and caltrain and muni are all on time. so good news here. the bay bridge toll plaza, metering lights start at 5:30 and trafficked will start to back up towards the maze. carquinez bridge along the

eastshore freeway to the maze will take you 19 minutes. then a quick drive into downtown san francisco. 238 in san leandro to the maze will take you a quick 15 minutes and then guess what? it's game night! houston rockets versus the golden state warriors, game time 7:30 p.m. so expect some more delays on the nimitz freeway headed into oracle. i'll send it to you. >> all right, roqui. thank you. developing now in washington state, a standoff with a suspect who reportedly shot and killed a police officer. the attack happened in tacoma. authorities say the officer was responding to a domestic violence call. there was some sort of fight, and the suspect reportedly shot the officer several times before he fled. the manhunt for two jail escapees from santa clara county is now over. both captured within hours of each other. kpix 5's maria medina is live outside the main jail in san jose with how it all went down. hey, maria. >> reporter: good morning, brian. yeah, this certainly has the beginning and end of the hollywood movie with two escapees on the run after they

broke out of jail here just before thanksgiving. now, rogelio chavez was arrested after a seven-hour standoff in san jose. investigators say he was hiding in his friend's attic, was high, and had drugs on him. now, his capture comes nearly 24 hours after the arrest of laron campbell, who investigators say was hiding at his sister's apartment in antioch. now, investigators say he crashed through the ceiling of the attic as marshals were serving a search warrant. >> there may be additional arrests of people who harbored chavez during the time that he had escaped. fugitive chavez was in possession of narcotics and we believe he is under the influence and he has been transported to a local hospital. >> reporter: now, in all, three women were arrested for allegedly helping the men while they were on the run for a week including a woman who allegedly helped chavez get to a gilroy

motel and campbell's sister and as you heard there the sheriff says that more charges could be expected. now as you may remember, the jail escapees escaped right behind me by sawing through window bars on their second story floor cell and rappelled down using bedsheets. live in san jose, maria medina, kpix 5. a 15-year-old high school football player is facing charges this morning for allegedly sexual assaulting another student. on november 18, a 15-year-old carondelet high school female student says she was attacked. three days later she reported the incident to administrators and police were contacted. kpix 5's andria borba spoke to the girl who has a message for her alleged attacker. means no. >> concord detectives have surveillance video of part of the attack. president-elect donald trump will be on the road again today beginning in indianapolis where he will announce a deal to keep about 1,000 jobs at a carrier air-conditioning plant. then he will head to ohio to begin a thank you tour with a rally in cincinnati. meanwhile, wilbur ross trump's nominee for commerce secretary says the new administration has what it takes to help working people even though both he and trump are billionaires. >> the fact that you're successful doesn't mean that you can't relate to working people. >> yesterday, trump continued to interview candidates for his staff and has not announced secretary of defense or secretary of state. also yesterday trump said he will take himself out of his business operations during his presidency and will have a news conference in a couple of weeks to outline details. the president of the university of california system is taking a stand against the president-

elect's expected immigration policies. janet napolitano vows not to cooperate with law enforcement who may try to deport illegal immigrant students. she released a statement yesterday that reads in part, we feel it necessary to reaffirm that uc will act upon its deeply held convictions that all members of our community have the right to work, study and live at uc location without fear. the san francisco unified school district left voicemail messages for more than 50,000 parents yesterday saying it will continue to provide a safe space for illegal immigrant students. new this morning, more than 22,000 people gathered in chapecoense brazil to more than their local soccer players who died in a plane crash. the fans packed the stadium in the city with a catholic mass for the family members of the fallen players. fans chanted the team members names. 71 out of 77 passengers were killed tuesday with a plane crash in colombia. authorities have already identified 59 of the victims

and hope to finish today. a full investigation is expected to take months but teams are now reviewing the black boxes recovered at the site. oakland's public ethics commission is criticizing elected officials over a perk first reported by kpix 5 last summer. they are getting free passes to events at the coliseum complex including warriors basketball games. it's part of an agreement signed more than a decade ago. the city council alameda county supervisors and members of the joint powers authority each get a luxury suite. the tickets are supposed to be used for, quote, public purposes. >> city council members and the mayor of the city of oakland again and again and again and again have put on forms that they are going to see games to oversee the facility. when the only reason i think in fact they are going to see game after game after game several times a week is to enjoy the game. >> a subcommittee will make recommendations to the city council as soon as next month

across the span and that's between 880 and 101. and moving over to the altamont pass, that traffic coming off 205 in tracy, that's moving at 25 miles per hour. speeds pick up to 35 miles per hour once you hit north flynn road. across 580 westbound, between north tracy boulevard and the altamont pass, that will take you 28 minutes. now, if you are taking that to the dublin interchange, here's a foggy look at that live altamont pass to 680, it will take 15 minutes. and a look at the golden gate bridge if you are heading into san francisco, 14 minutes between 580 and the golden gate toll plaza. >> did you say chatter? me chatter? talk about today, satellite- radar suggests clouds sweeping in a southerly direction take a little bit of light precipitation offshore across los angeles basin. otherwise, this is the deal. low pressure to the north trying to swing onshore bringing some again much-needed precipitation throughout the pacific northwest. here locally things are warming up gently if you want to call it that. maybe a degree or two warmer than yesterday. but then the numbers go back down again. livermore has not hit 60 degrees in the past six days. that's the coolest span since january 31 to february 5. so if it feels cool, it is. today across the state mid-50s will be common in throughout the central valley. it is currently in the high teens and low 20s from truckee back through the southern portion of the greater lake tahoe area going up to a high today of 36. and to the beaches monterey bay a forecast high in the mid-50s. we want to focus in on san jose and the santa clara valley. by the lunch hour temperatures gradually climbing into the 50s

with an afternoon high temperature only 56 to 57 degrees from mineta international airport to the levi's stadium area. but i'm going with an outside number today right around 60 degrees in the rose garden district. also alum rock, alviso back through willow glen into cupertino and campbell. otherwise high 50s on the peninsula today into belmont and also into sfo, san mateo. 57 degrees rockaway beach. 60 vallejo, benicia, martinez and american canyon. hey, antioch, good morning to you, your high temperatures 60. low 60s around guerneville and occidental. so tomorrow pretty much a repeat performance. and then check out the extended forecast because once we have a cold front sweep through the bay area on sunday night into monday, we'll increase the cloud cover. it will be rain-free, but then what we're talking about is your high temperatures only in the 50s monday through wednesday. hey, lace up a pair of skates and go to walnut creek, sunny skies today temperature of 58 degrees. do you ice skate? >> i do. not very well. but -- [ laughter ] >> yeah, it's always fun.

short-term goal planning. i create a curriculum to help them get emotional mastery, right, so they are not, you know, flipping out when things don't go their way. >> positive action better than one negative thought. um, you know, in chess, you know, it's three actions you move better than thinking you're going to lose a piece. >> reporter: in 2006 he created hip-hop chess federation. >> so many rappers talk about chess, right? i realized that i can use that as a lure to bring them into the game. >> reporter: he used his connections and got a hip-hop artist to help and decided to give up his job in silicon valley. >> because the kids matter more. because american education needs a booster shot. >> reporter: to boost student interest, he this year convinced his bosses to allow 18 students to take the two- hour class each week. >> you can concentrate better. when you're playing the game, you just concentrating on one thing. >> sometimes students are not

officer's identities. two jailed escapees captured after an intense search. now santa clara county sheriff laurie smith promises charges against anybody who helped them while they were on the run. kpix 5's maria medina live at the county's main jail in san jose with more on how the men were caught! good morning, maria. >> good morning, brian. >> reporter: this certainly had a dramatic ending like i said a few minutes ago, they could run but not hide for long. two jail escapees on the run for about a week after they escaped the jail here just before thanksgiving. now, rogelio chavez was arrested after a seven-hour sandoff in san jose. investigate -- standoff in san jose. investigators say he had been hiding in the attic of a friend's home, high and had drugs on him. his capture comes nearly 24 hours after the arrest of laron campbell, who was hiding at his sister's apartment in antioch and investigators say there, campbell actually crashed through the ceiling of the attic where he was hiding as

u.s. marshals served a search warrant. >> when you aid and abet somebody who is particularly a felon who actually broke out of the jail, that's a dangerous situation. >> reporter: yeah. and they promised that more charges would be coming. right now, they arrested three women who they say helped the men while they were on the run including a woman who helped chavez to a gilroy motel and laron campbell's sister. it was last week that the two men sawed through the window bars of their second story cell and used bedsheets to rappel down. live in san jose, maria medina, kpix 5. >> you know, maria, it's ironic in the middle of silicon valley there's this low tech escape, low tech high comedy tying bedsheets together. it is old world. is there any talk about making changes to the jail after an escape like this? >> reporter: yeah, you know, it really is something like a

hollywood movie. you just can't really believe it. but the undersheriff said yesterday during a press conference that the jail is old and that it's really loud in there and that's probably why the guards didn't hear them sawing through the window bars but they did say that they are going to install more cameras soon. back to you. >> thank you. right now the search is on for a gunman who opened fire on a freeway in oakland. this is what it look like along interstate 580 last night. the highway was shut down for nearly two hours during rush hour. police say shots were fired near the fruitvale off-ramp. a man and woman were shot. officers searched a white car at the bottom of the fruitvale off-ramp. no word on what they found. the victims are in the hospital in stable condition right now. the cirque du soleil worker who was killed in a san francisco accident was the son of a cofounder of the entertainment group. he is identified as olivier rochette of quebec. investigators say he was getting -- or he was set upping for the "luzia" show -- setting

up for the "luzia" show when he was struck. the last two shows were canceled. the status of upcoming shows is unclear. "luzia" will be in san francisco through january and in san jose for several weeks in february. cirque du soleil's ceo daniel lamar issued this statement about his death: i am heartbroken olivier has always been a member of our tight family and a beloved colleague. here's some of the damage people are waking up to across the south after deadly storms ripped through multiple states. at least five people were killed after powerful systems reached alabama, georgia, and tennessee yesterday. several counties are now cleaning up downed trees and fixing power lines. no one was hurt when a suspected tornado hit the atlanta area but two women who witnessed it say the wind was shocking. >> it was so much wind, everything was just flying everywhere. it was bad. really bad. like the wind just, like, everything was just flying

[ laughter ] >> good morning. it's a cool start to the day plus areas of patchy fog. this is the scene out towards that tri-valley, dublin- pleasanton area where we do have at this particular time areas of patchy fog that has rolled in over the dublin grade.

look at that. boy, limiting visibility in the santa rosa area this morning, as well. we have the pockets of fog around our inland areas. but right now, from our kpix 5 studios looking out towards the bay bridge, it's clear. and it is a bit on the cool side. san francisco is at 48 but 4 hours ago we were at 45. santa rosa you're at 35. 37 degrees in livermore backing through pleasanton into dublin, danville and blackhawk. today's temperatures on the cool side. going to feel like the first day of december. with the bright sunshine, replacing that area of low pressure that brought us that heavy drizzle yesterday, into the 50s up to 60 degrees towards willow glen into san jose. low 60s towards guerneville into santa rosa. the full forecast is still coming up at 48 minutes after the hour but right now, roqui, what's up on the roads? >> oh, there's not much going on yet but i do want to let you know that i turned my heater on in early november. i'm kind of a wimp. have been affected. anne makovec has more. >> reporter: san francisco has played a big part in the aids epidemic and search for a cure. here in san francisco's castro district, you can see part of the rainbow honor walk. these bronze plaquing all over castro street. students are going to be here along castro street to honor people have died of aids writing their names in chalk alongside some of these plaques here on castro street. yesterday world leaders gathered to observe world aids day. and to talk about the medical advances made so far. >> today we can talk about treatment becoming even strong tool for prevention. and that is key. that's why we should not have a resistance to the second generation of medicine we have

harm, they are encouraged to text bay to 741741. they will be connected with a counselor who can talk them through their feelings. new this morning a big pot bust with a christmas twist. authorities say that a california man tried to smuggle about $330,000 worth of pot into ohio using those beautiful packages and inside of them, 71 pounds of pot, hundreds of thc pills and a pound of hash oil. hm. police in new york are looking for a thief who made off with something unusual a pot of gold. it was an 86-pound bucket of gold flakes taken from an armored truck in september. police say the bucket was left unattended when a guard briefly went to the truck's can. the security video caught the man in action. the gold is worth $1.6 million. 30-year mortgage rates are on the rise since donald trump won the election. cbs news business analyst jill schlesinger is here to tell us what's behind the move and if

standoff. kpix 5's maria medina reports. >> reporter: good morning. a lot of people commented that they didn't think that one of the inmates would get very far because he had a distinct tattoo right over his eye. he was on the run for a week in the south bay. rogelio chavez was arrested after a seven you're standoff in san jose last night. investigator say he was hiding in the attic of a friend's home, was high and had drugs on him. his capture comes nearly 24 hours after the arrest of laron campbell who was hiding out in his sister's apartment in antioch. investigators say he crashed through the zeal over there as u.s. marshals served a search warrant. >> the investigation is ongoing and there may be additional arrests in the future of people who harbored chavez during the time he had escaped. fugitive chavez was in possession of narcotics and we believe he is under the influence, and he has been transported to a
