the one-alarm fire started at a home on new bridge avenue around 4:30 this morning. no injuries have been reported. no word on how the fire started. the music world is celebrating george michael. the british pop star died at the age of 53 over the holidays. roxanne saberi reports. ♪[ music ] >> reporter: george michael's sudden death from heart failure is sparking an outpouring of shock and sadness from fans an celebrities around the world. comedian ellen degeneres said i just heard about pie friend george michael's death. he was such a brilliant talent. i'm so sad. and the rock band one republic wrote, bee beyond sad, you were a legend and you were far too long, blasting last christmas
now. ♪[ music ] >> reporter: george michael shot to fame in the 1980s in the british band wham. he went on to become one of the world's top selling artists with his first solo album called faith. ♪[ music ] >> reporter: but there were times when his battle with drugs and run-ins with the police took over the headlines. in 1998, an undercover officer arrested him for lewd conduct in a public restroom. michael responded by coming out as gay. ♪[ music ] >> reporter: and he mocked the arrest in a video for a song, outside. a move that many fans today said made him even more popular. >> he was totally provocative in so many ways in his music, in his sexuality. >> reporter: over the past decade michael had more brushes with the law. but it is his music that people remember him for. with messages like this one from actor rob lowe. boy 7 angel now he can sing -- voice of an angel, now he can
sing for them. >> he died from heart failure. carrie fisher is still in the hospital this morning. her mother acted tress debbie reynolds posted on twitter yesterday that fisher is now stable. she also thanks all the fans and friends for the good wishes. fisher went into cardiac arrest on a flight on friday. fisher was returning to l.a. after filming a tv show for amazon in london. long distance travel can be draining. jackie ward is live on sfo on how concerns could take shape. >> reporter: good morning. so of course, we think that the busiest stress of travel days is behind. still, we're expecting to see big crowds at airports all across the country especially heading to the east coast because in the midwest, southwest airlines has issued a travel advisory through today because of the wintry weather expected to get. so that means delays in chicago, milwaukee and minneapolis. flights may be diverted or
delayed in that part of the country. law enforcement there is trying to remind drivers to take it slow. >> all you have to do is travel a few miles and everything feels good and you get complacent. and then you come around the corner or especially going across the bridge taking a ramp, and that's really going to find the problems. >> reporter: more than 45 million people are expected to travel between december 15 and january 2. from sfo, jackie ward, kpix 5. >> jackie, it sounds like sfo is trying to ease the stress that can come with traveling. it's doing so in an unusual way. how are they doing that? >> reporter: so we've heard of therapy dogs who are there to just offer a nice, you know, animal to pet, to relax passengers as they travel. but now sfo has a therapy pig. we have a picture of her, of course, her name is lelu the newest member of the wag brigade here at sfo. so she greets people. she does some tricks. and she even plays a toy piano.

we did start off with a few clouds this morning. they are wiping away, all associated with a small disturbance just anchored off the big sur coast. so as the clouds go away we are starting to see the setup of an offshore flow which means some northeast winds today drying out the atmosphere. so if it feels dry on your skin today, that is why. notice our temperatures below average again today. 50s pretty common in throughout moss and montara beaches all the way into half moon bay. 50s from sfo to foster city and to east palo alto, also palo alto at 54 degrees. los gatos and saratoga in the low 50s. when you couple in a northeast wind 10 to 20 you have a little bit of a chill in the air, mid- 50s common around san jose back through santa clara. east bay numbers 50 to 52 degrees from dublin, danville, blackhawk, san ramon, san ramon valley into the mid-50s. rentwood, tracy, oakley, discovery bay. also in the low 50s.
northeast breeze in stinson beach for the visibility, unlimited, 54 degrees at the coast today, 52 novato and upstream only high 40s in ukiah today. we have one more chance of rain for 2016. we'll pinpoint that day coming up. but right now let's bring her in, it's gianna back in the house. >> a close eye on 101 and 92. we have reports of a structure fire off the freeway, smoke both directions 101 near 9292 itself may also affected. right now traffic is okay because it is very light. light conditions expected this morning a lot of folks with the day off. 13 minutes now across the san mateo bridge from 880 to 101 so not seeing too many delays. but again it may be a bit of a distraction so heads up. northbound 101 if you are traveling from 92 to the 80 split, give yourself about 19 minutes so pretty clear if you are heading to sfo. no delays on 280 east 92, 280 to 101 out of half moon bay, traffic pretty quiet. and also don't forget there is a modified schedule for bart today mostly affecting the pittsburg-bay point line during
the commute hours. they will have instead of trains every minutes, they are running every 10 to 15 minutes and no ace train service today. back to you. this morning, three people are recovering in the hospital after a shooting and separate fight outside a san francisco nightclub just after 2:30 yesterday morning outside the grand in soma. police say that the incidents are not related. one person was arrested in the assault. but the shooting suspect is still on the loose. all three men who were injured are expected to be okay. police are looking for the thief who stole a massive menorah from a park in san francisco. authorities say it disappeared within the last two days. it's nearly 6 feet tall and weighs about 150 pounds. it was installed about two weeks ago in washington square north beach. members of the north beach chabad discovered it was gone when they went to light the first candle for hanukkah over the weekend. police don't have any suspects and it's still unclear why someone would take the menorah.
a southern california synagogue was vandalized on the first night of hanukkah. rabbis at the living torah center in santa monica discovered it yesterday morning. someone had thrown and smeared feces against the window. police aren't sure if the synagogue was targeted for religious reasons but one of the rabbis pointed out that no other buildings in the area were vandalized. >> why did you pick this place this night, ha, the night that we lit the menorah in the window? it's not nice to do not just to our synagogue but any religious institution out there. >> the synagogue has been targeted before. just last month the organization received threatening phone calls and a note. a man interrupted services with a nazi salute. police are stepping up patrols. benicia police are asking for your help identifying this man. they say that he broke into two convenience stores last week. this is video from the first one at a superstop at the southampton shopping center. when police arrived, the suspect had already fled and moved on to a nearby chevron gas station. officers say that he got away

good morning. 6:12 on this monday, december 26. happy boxing day! we're taking a look out towards the bay bridge from the transamerica pyramid and from each one of the 48 floors over 10,000 windows you have a spectacular view this morning. clear skies. temperatures still cool from the 20s to the 30s and 40s. we'll talk about any kind of a warmup and when you can expect it coming up in less than 4 minutes. in san jose, two families are grieving after a head-on crash left a mother and teen dead. relatives of 25-year-old jessica zamora stood by the road where she died on christmas day. police say that the mother was likely driving under the influence when she crossed the median at capitol expressway yesterday and hit a car with a couple and their 14-year-old son. the teenaged boy died in the accident. now jessica's relatives find it tough to cope with the tragedy and timing. >> we don't even know it's christmas now.
the pain that we're feeling, um, and the sadness that and sorrow that this brings to us. this whole situation. it's not only about her but also the little boy that died, as well. >> san jose police say this is the 47th fatal car crash in the city this year. new this morning, tens of thousands of germans are being allowed to go back home after a world war ii era bomb was successfully defused. the bomb was discovered last week in augsburg during construction work on an underground car park. more than 50,000 people were told to leave their homes yesterday morning. the bomb was dismantled a few hours later. it's reported to have come from a 1944 british air raid which destroyed the old town. president obama is spending his final holiday season as commander-in-chief in hawaii. he and his wife went to a marine corps base to visit with servicemen. >> although this will be my last time addressing you as president, um, i want you to know that as a citizen, my
gratitude will remain and our commitment to standing by you every step of the way, that won't stop. >> before they met with the troops, mr. and mrs. obama spent christmas morning opening gifts and playing games with their children. all around the bay area, volunteers spent christmas day helping the less for the national, as well. saint anthony's's in san francisco served up 3,000 meals. volunteers got there at 5 a.m. to start preparing. among those lending a helping hand, the indiana university football team, hoosiers playing in the foster farms bowl on wednesday at levi's stadium. volunteers are the salvation army picked up meals for people in san francisco who are homebound. drivers loaded up their cars with boxes and delivered christmas meals to 4,000 people. christmas may be over but the holidays are just kicking off down under. >> today people in australia

apartment complex in southern california. >> we have frosty temperatures inland. we'll talk about the next chance of rain coming up. >> up early out the door you're in luck. freeways look good. details coming right up. good morning. it's monday, december 26. i'm kenny choi. >> i'm maria medina in for michelle griego. it's 6:30. breaking news in san mateo where crews are on the scene of a house fire. the one-alarm fire started at home on newbridge avenue around 4:30 a.m. no injuries have been reported. and the fire is now out. right now there's no word on how it started. the music world is mourning the loss of iconic british pop star george michael. his family says that the 1980s music icon died peacefully at home in england over the holidays. michael gained worldwide fame as half of the british boy duo known as wham. he split from his band mate in 1986 and then launched his massively successful solo
career. and in san francisco's castro district, popular music veteran uses blared his biggest -- venues player his biggest tribute, last christmas. some say he gave them a voice before he "came out" publicly. >> for people who were gay they didn't have to say they were gay to know that we connected with them on a different level. george michael was that guy. like we all knew he was "cool" and we could relate to him way before he actually publicly announced. >> others in the castro told us that they will always remember michael, his bold fashion choices including those little leather jackets. [ laughter ] slick roads and packed airports could make long distance travel pretty treacherous today. kpix 5's jackie ward is live at sfo to break down the concerns. jackie. >> reporter: roads are ice free here because we are in san francisco. so we're for the national in
that aspect and it's pretty calm here for now. it's early still, though, so we don't expect it to stay this quiet as the day goes on. sfo officials recommend people get to the airport at least two hours before they fly if that's domestic. if they are flying internationally, they suggest you get here three hours before your flight. just getting to the airport may be difficult in places like chicago, minneapolis, milwaukee. southwest airlines issued a travel advisory there because of the forecast weather conditions. in minnesota ice on the roads is making it slippery getting to the airport. >> those ramps start icing up gunmen. dot will be out but if you happen to be taking an exit ramp at that right moment when the temperatures drop and d.o.t. hasn't been out you have to watch the exits. sfo officials are suggesting that people use the domestic garage to get picked up and dropped off. and as long as cars are staying there for about 10 minutes or less, they are hoping that by doing that, traffic congestion

the upper deck into san francisco but things are very nice through there. all right, taking a look at mass transit there are some changes. modified schedule for bart during commute hours so less trains timing wise. instead of every 5 minutes, they will come every 10 to 15 minutes for bart. no ace train today. muni is on a holiday schedule. a sunday schedule in fact. and caltrain has some modifications. capitalcapitol corridor a regular schedule. vta sunday schedule. crest dinner cut short for nearly 2 dozen people in san ramon last night. they had to evacuate when a fire broke out at a chinese restaurant. crews were called to the place around 7:00. the fire started in the kitchen and then spread into a duct system. witnesses say that smoke could be seen about a mile away. that's damage to baskin- robbins, damage to the restaurant, and smoke damage to
the neighboring buildings. one person complaining of smoke inhalation. >> everyone was able to get out safely. and all of the shops nearby were closed but authorities say that some have smoke damage. new details. officials in russia say a pilot error/a technical failure are the likely causes of yesterday's plane crash over the black sea. the country is observing a national day of mourning today as rescue teams continue to search for the 92 victims of the crash. the military jet crashed in the black sea just two minutes after taking off from sochi. dozens of singers in russia's military choir were on board. ♪[ music ] >> the intelligence agency said no sign of terror. world leaders did not put their differences aside on christmas day. president obama received heavy criticism yesterday from israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. this in response to a u.n. resolution condemning israel's west bank settlement activity. the u.s. abstained from voting on the resolution, allowing the
measure to pass. some republicans are slamming the president. >> he is in this desperate frenzy. what he is actually doing is setting up a whole series of things to distract trump. >> the obama administration views the settlements as an obstacle to a two-state solution between israelis and palestinians. netanyahu has requested a meeting with the u.s. ambassador to israel to discuss the decision. tonight is the third night of hanukkah. the jewish festival of light. last night a rabbi lit the second candle on a menorah in union square. the structure is named after the late bill graham. people gathered in the square to hear music and then observe the lighting ceremony at dusk. another ceremony is planned for night 3 tonight. that starts at 5 p.m. the national menorah was lit in washington, dc over the weekend. the orchestra also performed. this tradition on the national mall dates back to 1979 when president carter lit it for the first time. and today millions around
the world will mark the first day of kwanzaa. this year has special meaning. this is the 50th anniversary of the first celebration of african-american history and culture. kwanzaa lasts through january 1. each day represents one of the seven guiding principals for african-americans. a trip to the grand canyon turns into a 26 hour hike in the middle of the night for a mother trying to save her family. she started after she and her husband and 10-year-old son lost gps service and their car ran off the road and karen decided to walk to the highway for help. she ended up hiking 30 hours straight in the dark with no winter boots. >> what kept her going was she said is that she didn't want her mother to bury her daughter, she didn't want her son to be without a mother, she didn't want her twin to be without a sister so she kept going. >> karen got to this cabin where she was rescued by a search party and hospitalized.
her husband and son got help, as well. the family may vacation there again. it is now 6:40. a trip to the movies has become a popular christmas pastime. but for one oregon man, it turns into an ordeal he will never forget! >> and one bay area town has turned city hall into its newest piece of public art. we'll give you a look inside. ,,

[ laughter ] >> after all of that, he couldn't get out the front door. so he decided to come clean about this.

the bay bridge you shouldn't have any troubles. look at that. very lightly traveled this morning. easy conditions westbound as you head into san francisco. give yourself about 20 minutes to make the trek and no delays in san francisco itself. but there are some modifications to mass transit for the week because of the holiday. so keep that in mind for bart, no ace train service today. they will be back at it tomorrow. muni is on a sunday schedule. and a modified train service for caltrain. also same goes for the golden gate ferries and buses. holiday schedule. holiday schedule as well for vta. and a sunday schedule for transamerica pyramid, capitol corridor is running on a regular schedule. just to keep in mind, enforced parking day and sweep meeting. golden gate bridge traffic is quiet out of marin into san francisco. pretty much an easy ride into san francisco this morning from all points. northbound 101 out of the south
