michelle. let's get a look at weather and traffic. here's roberta gonzales good morning. it's friday, december 30. i'm kenny choi. >> i'm anne makovec in for michelle griego this morning. last friday of 2016. the countdown is certainly on. let's get a look outside. that is the beautiful bay bridge. a lot of people are going to be coming across that bridge tomorrow to watch the big fireworks show in san francisco. we are getting ready to ring in the new year. >> are we going to have clear conditions for that fireworks show? >> no. but it will still be nice. [ laughter ] >> it's going to be partly cloudy. the main thing is going to be the cold weather moving in. we're so tired, it's been so cold for so long, but even colder air mass is coming this way to kick-start the brand-new year. i know anne you were saying you're going to be out on a boat? >> i am. so i mean, i'm going to be able to see the fireworks, right? >> yes, you will. that's the best place to be on the boat in the bay. >> it's going to be clear enough to see them? >> it will be. we'll have partly cloudy conditions but the clouds will

be pretty much mid- to high level cloudiness. temperatures will be in the 40s for all the reveling plans. but it's going to feel a lot colder. we have a couple different areas of low pressure pushing into the bay area. right now it's freezing in santa rosa. 37 in livermore. as you take a look at these very cool temperatures, it's actually five and six degrees warmer or more mild than 24 hours ago. an area of low pressure to the south of us bringing scattered showers to southern california backing into santa barbara backing into santa maria and san luis obispo. we'll have a high shield of clouds and cooler conditions today. we'll pinpoint the chance of rain for the bay area, we'll even talk about snow in our local mountains. that's coming up at 18 after the hour but first here's roqui. anne, a nice coat, champagne that will keep you warm! good along the altamont pass. altamont pass to 680 will take 14 minutes. now, if you are traveling into the peninsula, you're looking good as well from hayward to foster city. 880 to 101, 13 minutes. bart on time. ace trains one, seven, eight and ten not running. muni express buses not running due to the holiday schedule. larkspur ferry reduced schedule, sausalito ferry regular schedule. tomorrow night, new year's eve muni free starting at 8 a.m. bart extended service until 3 a.m. caltrain, samtrans, ac transit and vta will also be free starting at 8 p.m. bart is not free. as people count down the hours to 2017, bay area police departments are promising to

step up patrols. kpix 5's maria medina live in san francisco with the police department's warning to people coming into the city to party. >> reporter: good morning. it's simple. their warning, don't drink and drive and have a plan to get home safely. this is video from last year's new year's eve celebrations. this year, they promise to step up patrols. they will have dozens of police officers along the embarcadero ahead of the fireworks show and, of course, they're also going to be patrolling the bars along polk and geary and along the mission, as well. they say basically if you are drinking an driving, you're going to get caught. >> we're not going to allow any type of public intoxication or drinking in public. we're encouraging to please come into the city to use public transportation or rideshare companies because there's no excuse for driving under the influence. >> all right. so they have areas where they are going to patrol where they are really going to saturate patrols but they say they are going to get realtime updates every, single hour so that they

can move wherever they need to in san francisco. live in san francisco, maria medina, kpix 5. a dramatic jewelry heist in san francisco. robbers beat a jewelry dealer and took off with a bag containing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of diamonds and gold. it happened last night outside the jewelry center on utah street. that's in the south of market area. police say the suspects punched a 72-year-old jewelry dealer in the chest and then took off with his bag. there was about $400,000 worth of gold and diamonds inside. a relative who is also in the jewelry business thinks the crooks may have followed their victim for days. >> i wouldn't be surprised only because dealers are driving around moving jewelry and people that would do something like that, they will usually get a sight on them, watch them for a couple of days and get a feel for where they're going and follow them around until they do something like that. >> the man attacked is in shock

but otherwise okay. new details we now know the identity of a woman shot and killed in west oakland this week. [ no microphone ] >> police say [ indiscernible ] was killed just -- >> all right. um -- we're talking about a couple of deadly shootings in oakland. we have new details this morning. two happened within four hours of each other. a woman shot and killed in west oakland. that was just before, um, 6:00 wednesday night. 40-year-old irene meyers was the victim that. that shooting was near west grand avenue and market street. the same night a 22-year-old man fatally shot about 2 miles away near golden gate playground. his identity is not released. investigators are still gathering clues in both of those shootings. homicides in san francisco are up 7% over last year. police are looking for the latest suspect in a deadly shooting in the tenderloin. it happened about 5:00 last night. a man gunned down along golden gate avenue near hyde street. he was taken to the hospital

where he died from his injuries. and that marks the city's 58th homicide in 2016. 2016 did see a sharp rise in police shootings across the nation. total of 135 officers were killed this year. the 64 who were killed, 21 were killed in ambush attacks. most notably in dallas and baton rouge. police shooting deaths jumped 56 since last year. minutes ago, russia president-elect announced that russia will not expel u.s. diplomats in response to the white house sanctions. this comes after the obama administration yesterday ordered dozens of the nation's diplomats out of the u.s. including here in the bay area. the administration is also shutting down two russian compounds. even some republicans are supporting retaliation over russia's alleged hacking. >> it's not questioning the legitimacy of donald trump. he won. and i think he won by having a strong message. but it is saying that if a

country thinks that they can influence us in a certain way, there's going to be consequences for them. >> russia continues to deny accusations that it hacked the u.s. presidential election to help donald trump win. in a statement, president-elect trump says that the u.s. should move on but added, quote, in the interests of our country, i will meet with leaders of the intelligence community next week in order to be updated on the facts of this situation. with people expected to ring in 2017 a little early, possibly starting tonight, three local police agencies will be watching the streets more carefully to catch drunk drivers. santa rosa police won't reveal where but they are going to be starting out at 7:00 with checkpoints. richmond police will be at marina bay parkway and foothill at 8:00. oakland police say they will be out all evening. and ridesharing companies are reminding drivers everywhere, hail a cab, lyft or uber on new year's eve if you do plan to party. there's a website where you can find out exactly how much it

would cost you through each company. it's called ride guru. all do you is put in your starting and ending locations and find out which ridesharing option would cost the least to get around on new year's eve night. and to help prevent drunk driving over the holiday weekend aaa will offer free rides and tows on new year's eve. the "tipsy tow" program is offered to all northern california drivers. it will take you and your car home for free. the rides are offered beginning 6 p.m. saturday until 6 a.m. sunday. just call aaa help. time is 5:08. new york city take unprecedented security measures as it prepares for new year's eve. how those celebrating in times square will be kept safe. >> and most kids just want toys for christmas but not this little boy. why a suitnated to the top of his list. >> yeah. the last of the flowers on floats for the rose parade. each float has 800,000 blooms for monday. some volunteers have been doing it for 30 years. each flower is hand cut and placed on the floats. >> i feel like i'm making an impact oo even though we're only cutting roses. each rose we cut is impactful because every rose here counts. >> if they aren't finished by this saturday they will work through the night so it's ready on sunday a day ahead of the parade. law enforcement from california to new york working to keep those new year's celebrations safe. roxana saberi reports from times square where they are expecting millions of people tomorrow night. >> reporter: two million people are expected to pack times square to welcome in the new year. >> people will be safe this new year's eve because we're there.

>> reporter: amid the revelers will be 7,000 nypd officers. some will be seen. others will blend into the background. >> this is where everybody has to be on their toes. everybody knows how important this is, the eyes of the world are on times square. >> reporter: no large bags or umbrellas will be allowed but there will be new security measures. 65 garbage trucks filled with sand will be parked around times square. it's in response to attacks in germany and france where trucks were used as weapons to plow through crowds. the fear of another terror attack weighs on the minds of new yorkers. >> anything is possible. >> reporter: there is no specific threat to the city. but they are taking no chances. >> in many respects, it raises the concerns that we're perhaps missing something or not tuned into something. ♪[ music ] >> reporter: in california, security is heightened for

pasadena's new year's day rose parade. police have using water filled barriers along all 56 streets that cross the parade route to prevent an attack with a vehicle. in las vegas, police joined by the fbi, national guard and secret service will provide security along the famous strip. backpacks, coolers and large bags are all banned. roxana saberi for cbs news, new york. >> now, the nypd says there is no specific threat that they are preparing for individual attackers that may be flying under the radar. if you are looking for a way to get your kids in bed early on new year's eve night, netflix has the answer. netflix will have an early countdown with the idea being that you can trick your kids into thinking it's midnight way ahead of time. [ laughter ] >> get them to bed. the countdowns are based on popular cartoon characters and are a big hit with kids. this is the third year that netflix will offer them. last year, the peak streaming time was around 8 p.m. >> get them to bed so the real party can begin. reported problems about this year's hottest holiday toy hatchimal. some aren't hatching. the company behind the toy is flooded with complaints all week so they responded by posting a troubleshooting video online with ways that you can help it hatch. now there's a new problem. guess the roads are looking so good right now it was easy to clear it out. we don't have to tell you about it. starting with very smooth traffic along the altamont pass coming off 205 at 65 miles per hour. 59 once you hit north flynn road to the dublin interchange. here's a live look at that moving traffic. altamont pass to 680, 14 minutes. moving to the san mateo bridge from hayward to foster city, that's 880 to 101, that's a quick 13-minute drive into the peninsula and if you are traveling into downtown san francisco looking good on 80 westbound from the carquinez bridge, that's 18 minutes and then expect no delay as you travel through the toll plaza. those metering lights probably won't turn on this morning. okay. let's talk about what's going on throughout the bay area tonight. dallas mavericks versus golden state warriors game time 7:30 so delays on the nimitz towards oracle. and also, in the south bay, we have a sharks game versus the philadelphia flyers. puck drops at 7 p.m. we have roberta clapping her hands. go sharks! and then in san francisco, we have a little chaos going on

with that critical mass bike ride at 6 p.m. so i do suggest you watch out for delays and watch out for bike riders. so drive safely, everybody. i'll send it to you. >> all right, roqui. thank you. be good morning, everybody. 5:17. live weather camera on the transamerica pyramid. we are looking due east towards the bright lights of the estuary of oakland and alameda also the port of oakland. and we can see it. we have clear skies right now. a few clouds drifting into the bay area from the south. it's freezing in santa rosa. it's in the mid-30s in throughout the tri-valley. it is now 42 in san jose. 40 degrees redwood city along the peninsula and oakland 44. these temperatures are actually 5 to 6 degrees warmer than 24 hours ago. in brentwood, paul our weather watcher say it's 38 degrees there. good morning to katie in hayward, 44. robert sullivan in redwood city, he is sporting 40 degrees. 34, so says linda in fairfield. satellite-radar suggests an area of low pressure that's been hanging tight to the southern california coast for

the past several days is now beginning to lift up and eject to the east providing rain showers from san diego all the way into the santa barbara area. a few light showers also noted around santa maria into san luis obispo. we'll be the recipient of high clouds drifting in from monterey and up in a northerly direction towards the santa clara valley. here's your futurecast. today again partly cloudy skies. slight chance of rain showers overnight. i'm picking up echoes off the coast. slight chance of rain saturday morning. if we see anything, it will be a few one hundredths of an inch of rain. sunday will be clear as we ring in the new year. the main feature with that is some cooler air mass drifting in the from the north. it's another area of low pressure that wants to push in on monday. not a lot of precipitation associated with this system. if we do see anything, the snow level would be down to 2500 feet on monday, 1,000 feet on tuesday. meanwhile on this getaway friday, 60 in monterey bay

after a high yesterday of 70. 48 degrees in the greater lake tahoe area. whoo! it's like springtime skiing but over the weekend we are going to get an inch of snow saturday, colder monday. heavenly no new snow yet but you have plenty of packed powder. north star, wow, smores time at 3:30 sharp by the ice rink. have a fun time there! temperatures today 50s and low 60s across the board, cooler today than what it has been for the past couple of days and then again it is going to be so much colder for the beginning of next week. temperatures, boy, barely into the 50s. but it's going to be dry for new year's eve, temperatures into the 40s. we should have some of those clouds clear out by midnight for all the reveling. >> all right. sounds like no real fog? >> right now, the only fog i'm picking up now at this hour is in the sacramento area some very light fog but for the fireworks, you mean, no. no fog at all. >> great. >> mid- and high-level clouds and then they will clear up by midnight. >> sounds like a party.

thanks, roberta. for weeks and weeks a little boy in alabama begs his mom for a christmas present. he wanted a weatherman costume and then something even better happened. here's some video of 3-year-old boy opening up his black suit, red tie and white dress shirt. he is so dapper. the video went viral. 52,000 people couldn't help but cheer for the boy obsessed with the local meteorologist, jason smith. soon, yeah, look what happened! woods appears on tv the same station where smith works and gets to do the weather with his weatherman hero! live in san francisco, maria medina, kpix 5. hundreds are expected to take to the streets in richmond tonight as part of the annual cease-fire night walk against gun violence. the campaign was started a few years ago to try to curb a spike in crime in the city. the walk starts at the corner mcdonald avenue and harbor way at 7 p.m. shocking surveillance video has surfaced showing a man shooting at a passing car in san francisco's bayview district. it happened on december 5. you can see a man in some sort of skeleton mask running up lane street. he peers around the corner and pulls out a gun and fires at a black car on palou avenue just feet away from the gunfire a woman and her kids taking cover behind a van. when police got to the scene, they say that there was no sign of the gunman or the car. hollywood has dimmed its lights for debbie reynolds. the city's iconic chinese theater dimmed its lights to honor the star. reynolds died of a stroke on

wednesday just one day after her daughter carrie fisher died. there are reports a private joint funeral will be held for them with a public memorial later. time check 5:33. roberta is back with a check of the weather. >> big changes in the forecast. >> and it begins with today. we'll start to see some increasing cloudiness from the south and then we have a couple other areas of low pressure initialing over the weekend and into month and tuesday and these are cold fronts so they will draw in a lot of cold air mass. we'll have the possibility of snowflakes down to 2500 feet on monday down to 1,000 feet on tuesday. >> wow! >> good morning, everybody. out the door, we're about five to six degrees warmer at this very early hour compared to yesterday. but still freezing in santa rosa. it's 31 degrees now just dropped within the last couple of minutes. 37 degrees in livermore. it's in the 40s from san jose through oakland into redwood city. san jose now at 42 degrees. satellite and radar suggests a

shield of clouds drifting from the south to the north so becoming partly to mostly cloudy during the late afternoon hours. temperatures going down compared to yesterday. out of the 60s along the seashore to the 50s. 50s, 60s common around the peninsula including la honda, woodside, atherton, all the way back to east palo alto, belmont, as well. low 60s in morgan hill. 6 2 in san jose where yesterday we had a high temperature in the mid- to upper 60s across the santa clara valley. east bay numbers stacking up in the 50s and 60s. a gentle breeze in the morning hours increasing to 15 during the afternoon. 50s also common from stinson beach through santa rosa into novato and sonoma. i think you're getting the feel for things here. we are in the 50s and low 60s, but much cooler days ahead with the possibility of rain and snow plus, we'll talk about that new year's eve forecast that's coming up at 48 minutes after the hour. right now, boy, it's been slow all week, right, roqui? >> it has been. it's spoiling us in the traffic center. not preparing us for next monday when everybody starts to

along the nimitz freeway looking pretty good, as well. 238 in san leandro along 880 northbound to the made will take you 16 minutes. if you are taking southbound 880 to the san mateo bridge a live look at that into the peninsula 880 to 101, 13 minutes. police are trying to figure out why a man walked into the transbay tube and caused delays on bart. the trespasser jumped on the tracks at the embarcadero station yesterday during the evening commute. people waiting on the platform posted these photos to instagram. while the man was in the tube, trains packed with commuters could not run at full speed. they had to be operated manually through the tube which caused major delays while police officers searched for him. they found and caught the man about 2 hours later. you can see him here. he ended up shirtless and filthy. he made it more than a mile into the tube. a rotten egg smell continues to waft through parts of san francisco today but air quality officials say they may be closer to finding out where

the smell is coming from. people in the city and in richmond have been complaining about the smell several days this week and now we are hearing it might have come from flaring at the chevron refinery. monitors in that area detected a release of sulfur but investigators are still looking at other sources, as well. >> we're looking at some of the landfills in the area, waste water treatment plant in the area and just seeing if there were any upsets in the area that might cause the smell. >> officials say wherever that odor came from, it does not pose a health hazard. and pg&e says there's no sign of a gas leak. in oakland's fruitvale neighborhood city officials are growing more concerned about lead poisoning in the area. the tap water is not the big worry. new study by reuters shows that of 500 children tested in fruitvale, more than 7% had elevated levels of lead in their bodies. that's far worse than in flint, michigan. but some officials point to

lead paint as the problem, not the water. it was used on homes built before 1978 and those make up the bulk of fruitvale's properties. >> over the last 10 years, we treated over 5,000 children for lead poisoning here in alameda county. it is still a clear, present danger for children who are living in aging homes. >> alameda county says it has over $3 million budgeted to help low income homeowners deal with lead concerns. as the bay area builds up its transportation infrastructure to get people where we ned to go, dozens of har -- where we need to go, dozenser harbor seals have to make an adjustment. these guys had trade a dock in alameda for a special concrete styrofoam platform. their long-time perch was removed in july to make room for a ferry maintenance facility but neighbors pushed for a replacement and that platform was built.

locals do have mixed feels on how much the harbor seals like their close quarters. >> it's too small and will be too small when the baby seals come in. >> what do you think they are doing? >> sleeping. >> are they comfy? >> yeah. >> some long-time harbor seal monitors are now pushing the city to build a second platform. carmaker honda is recalling hundreds of thousands of minivans over trouble with their seats. jill wagner of cbsmoneywatch.com has that story and more this morning. good morning, jim. >> reporter: good morning, kenny. it is the last trading day of 2016. it will probably be another pretty light day of trading. the dow fell 13 points yesterday the nasdaq lost 6. futures are pointing to a higher open. the markets have come a long way this year. they are at near record high levels and there's this new optimism in the wake of donald trump's winning the white house. a far cry from january this year. it was one of the worst starts ever to a year for the markets.

investors were concerned about the chinese economy. long-term mortgage rates are at their highest levels since early 2014. freddie mac says the rate for a 30-year fixed rate loan rose to 4.32%. honda is recalling more than 630,000 of its odyssey minivans because the second row seats could move unexpectedly. vehicles for years 2011 to 2016 are included. >> it's breakfast time, jim. let's talk food. taco bell is pairing their tacos with fries i hear. >> reporter: so yeah. that's right. taco bell is serving french fries at least one location in california in irvine. now, they come covered in nacho sauce and other tex-mex toppings. loaded fries are popular overseas. >> got to get garlic fries, as well. we here in the bay area we love our gilroy garlic. what do you like on your fries? >> those mcdonald's are serving. >> yeah. in the bay area. i haven't tried it yet but i

this is the bay bridge. that's one of the best locations to see the new year's eve fireworks. also between mission and folsom or just standing in front of the ferry building. the complete new year's eve forecast coming up in less than four minutes. on the ice of lake tahoe a bay area professor rolls up his sleeves and summons his survival skills to save a teenager in trouble. ian whitemarsh an oakland resident was walking with his family near the lake when a relative spotted the boy falling into the freezing water. whitemarsh said help wouldn't get there in time so he recalled all he learned from winters growing up in michigan and carefully approached the teen. he pulled the boy by carefully balancing their weight. but ian admits it was terrifying. >> my sister-in-law yells out, screams, and says, he is in the water! it was extremely scary the whole time i was scared.
